electronic dance music goes back to the 70s with kraftwerk and yellow magic orchestra, and then electronic dance music blew up in the 80s and 90s. In the late 90s you had the first attempt to mainstream it in america with gen x, except they called it "electronica" instead, which was just a catch all for different djs like fatboy slim, crystal method, aphex twin, daft punk, etc.
Anyways what became known as edm is a corporate abomination of bland garbage that appealed to dude bros who would have been listening to korn instead of skrillex if they were born a decade prior
