why is music not adventurous like this anymore? why does it feel so structured and expected now? was the framework still being made in the 2000s?less and less did great albums pop up in 2010s and now especially in the 2020s
>>128000608Why can't more women make souvll music live, Joanna?
It's harder to build an audience these days without playing by the numbers.
>>128000608You might think all modern music is formulaic, but then you'll hear something like "Revvin' It Up" and you realize that the musical adventure is just beginning! I guarantee you have never heard something at this level before. https://youtu.be/2hkb76EmBWc
There are it's just incredibly obscure like Ellesmeres prog album last year
>>128001092Thanks for the recc (I'm not being mean spirited I'm actually checking it out). Anyways back to OP I do find it funny how you describe music more "structured and expected" as despite music becoming increasingly less complex or "Shackled by the rules of music theory", the more it all ends up sounding the same. Rock music on a whole suffers from this problem because of it's reactionary nature.Anyone can punch through a beautiful painting, yet not many can make one
>>128000608there are. you have to stop waiting to be sponfed and look it up by yourself.
other musicians afraid of spelunkin' down in those cavesalso afraid what the zoomers might say if they saw 'em in that statelollin, splashin around, it just seems irrational, really
>>128002939I guess what I meant by "structured" was not exactly adhering to theory, a better word was probably formulaic.

>>128002939Jazz is extremely complex and also some of the samiest sounding music ever
>>128004217Yeah which is still ironic considering that there's less of an adherence. Everything is verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus at most. Anyways listen to some classical music it's generally more adventurous and borderline can feel futuristic despite some pieces being from 4 centuries ago>>128006186I never got into Jazz so I'm not sure what to say of this
>>128007011I mean even in classical there are sub genres that tend to sound extremely samey like expressionism or new complexity
>>128006186i dont get thisyou cant tell stuff like giant steps sound like kind of blue or bitches brew
>>128007392>you cant tell album from one sub genre sounds like an album from an entirely different subgenreI'm not saying it all sounds the same, im saying it tends to be extremely samey, like most bebop albums sound very similar, most fusion you can split into two categories like cheesy 80s fusion and psychedelic 70s fusion, most swing is extremely similar, etc...Not the case for stuff like prog rock or post punk or zolo or old school death metalSome genres are just less samey than others, the wider point I was trying to make though is that complexity doesn't lead to variety
I miss the 2000s niche so much
>>128007335Yeah not even all of the works of some of the greatest artists are worth listening to like Vivaldi
>>128004381literally this
>>128000608Governor Newsom’s niece
>>128000608There's still obviously adventurous stuff, but I think the big factor right now is how dependent visibility is on algorithms instead of word of mouth or even critical write-ups. Though the latter is judt as much a product of how formerly indie-focused platforms themselves turned back to radio pop and rap in the last 15 years. And perhaps another factor is that as it becomes easier and easier for anyone to record something and put it out, each year there's more oversaturation of material to sift through, and much of it is going to be people trying to mimic already established sounds and tropes.
>>128004311>>128008497She'd already recorded her first EPs before Gavin became SF's mayor.
>>128000608>was the framework still being made in the 2000s?framework was made since the 1970s, but indie wasn't inside of it yet.
Music from even 15 yrs ago felt so much fresher, even though it was derivative of older artists, as all music is. And in retrospect, those albums are still good for the most part (some aged poorly)But somehow, bands like Geese that are pushed as the 2nd coming of rock, are equally derivative but don't feel fresh at all
>>128000608I'm listening to this album right now. On a CD player with my KEF speakers and SVS subwoofer. Great stuff, and the album introduced me to Bill Callahan.
>>128009666Back then you had the blogosphere and local scenes. You could be creative and get a following. Now you have algorithms, playlists and social media. Your music and your image has to conform to it. I've tried getting on playlists recently and maybe I just suck and am out of touch but I always got the response that the music didn't fit.
