Let's discuss Maggie Rogers.

I've obviously sung endless praises for the album Surrender, but her early work merits a closer look, especially The Echo, which she wrote and recorded as a high schooler. The album is standard Folk music, with its strength lying in the lyrics; rough around the edges and struggling to discover her strengths. However, the standout track is the closing tune, "Satellite." Arranged with a piano, violin and trumpet, Maggie croons about longing for a moment of reprieve without indulging in maudlin sentimentality:
https://youtu.be/FxhaT1hgBp4

"Embers", "Wolves" and "Deep in the Earth" are also very worthy:

https://youtu.be/G8VxeMPe85Q
https://maggierogers.bandcamp.com/album/the-echo

The album Blood Ballet continues where The Echo left off. While a little more consistent, the album lacks a strong emotional centerpiece like "Satellite" which leaves me yearning for more. That said, it still features great tunes like "Resonant Body", "James", "Drift", "Little Joys", "Anybody" and, of course, the highlight "Symmetry":

Finally, we have her previously unreleased Shoegaze EP that appeared on Notes From the Archive: Recordings 2011-2016. According to her commentary, one of the tunes came about as a result of her separating from her man who moved to LA in pursuit of a career. Despite spending two years in a committed relationship, she still yearned to be together while he chased his dreams beyond the Rockies. The music here reaches an emotional peak that wouldn't quite be felt until Surrender:

Surrender yourself to the greatest album of the 2020s.

On the surface, Maggie Rogers embodies everything I loathe about modern female Pop. She's a progressive poster child who stumps for the Democratic Party, cites feminist theory like scripture and serenades a liberal middle class audience hellbent on transforming America into a political monoculture. This dissonance between her girl-next-door image on album with her high-class call girl Gala appearances also cannot be ignored. My inner Carl Schmitt demands the friend/enemy distinction, but I sheath my sword for her. Beneath the activism lies something rarer than ideological alignment: raw humanity.

Surrender sounds like a private journal blasted through stadium-sized hooks. Energetic and upbeat songs like "Shatter", "Want Want" and "Overdrive" hit with fuzzed adrenaline while "Be Cool" exhales into groove-cooled calm. Other songs like "Anywhere With You" and "Begging for Rain" drip with melancholy without being maudlin. Nothing stagnates; even the quiet tracks stay in motion.

Maggie's resonant purity inspires building futures or collapsing into the arms of someone who loves you after a brutal day. All told, it may be the most unapologetically human album ever to breach Pop radio:

>Surrender [Capitol, 2022]
>It so happens that in early 2016 I briefly tutored unmistakably bright-and-a-half NYU senior Rogers, whose plan to write an Alanis Morissette 33 1/3 was shelved when Pharrell Williams, then artist in residence at NYU's Clive Davis Institute, heard something in "Alaska" that made her the biggest star the Institute has ever turned out. But it wasn't until early 2019 that Capitol dropped her Heard It in a Past Life album, which I'm not the only one to find overcooked the way multiproduced major-label debuts can be. So I was chuffed to learn that instead of rushing to follow it up Rogers took time off to earn a master's at Harvard Divinity School as she pretty much less simultaneously came up with this cleaner and more focused long-player. Sonically, although with input from Harry Styles producer Kid Harpoon I bet, the music here bears the mark of a singer-songwriter who also leads her own band. Not that it's anything like spare. But despite its orchestral dimensions it projects plenty of detail--strident, yet so intricate that its intensity has a well-wrought delicacy to it. Although the themes are more emotional than erotic, there's plenty of eroticism in there--some spirituality with an appetite for permanence too. At 28, Rogers is no longer any kind of post-teen. You can tell. A-

My big issue with Don't Forget Me is that it feels unfinished. I understand the album was supposed to feel breezy and rough around the edges but the songs suffered for it. It felt like an EP stretched out to the 30 minute mark to technically be an album but the tracks consequently listen like B-sides. Still has the killer tune "The Kill" which lingers long after the first listen and even gives me butterflies.

Generally, I felt the album was too gentle for its own good. It was frustrating in a way; I would hear melodies that were great and could be catchy, but the mellowness of the music made it hard to fully latch onto.

Indeed, it was supposed to be off the cuff and intentionally rough while still being studio quality. Trouble is, the material was far too thin. She apparently was going through a breakup which explains songs like "So Sick of Dreaming", "The Kill" and the title track.

Speaking of "So Sick of Dreaming", that tune is fucking execrable. The song would've been just average but she chose to include this smug spoken word anecdote about being stood up by a date who went out to a Knicks game instead of meeting her and her taking glee in the Knicks losing. It's understandable to feel hurt especially by such a cad but the tone is just jarring with the rest of the song. Reworked, it would feel so much better.

Maggie does not have what it takes for household-name-level success, even if that window was briefly cracked with the Pharrell clip. Outside of in-one-ear-and-out-the-other streams from various themed playlists, she pretty much only appeals to lesser Maggies: coddled, overachieving bumpkins who dream of being staff writers at The Cut. "Maggie Rogers" is a meticulously curated assembly of bourgeoisie signifiers, about as far from the life-or-death stakes of proper fandoms as you can get. This is partly why she doesn't catch on.

She is however a totally logical pick for warming up the crowd at a Coldplay concert: perfectly polite and adequate background slosh that dutifully scans for its hole and fills it, pedestrian and inoffensive; zero chance of overshadowing the headliners, feisty enough for a statement tee on the way home.
>>
>>128053314
Hot take, m8. I r8 8/8

Household-name status isn’t the only bar for success. Rogers has done two sold-out MSG shows, headlines her own tours, and pulls strong festival slots. Critics from Rolling Stone, Spin, Paste, The Independent, Flood, etc., rated Don’t Forget Me from solid to glowing. You can dislike the music, but "background slosh" doesn’t square with minutes-long ovations and fans belting every word. She’s a mid-scale, durable artist by choice, not a failed pop monolith.

Who needs to be Beyoncé-big anyway? I value the songwriting, the live energy, and a fanbase that actually listens. If she lands as "polite" to you, fair; she lands as human and immediate to me.

If "background slosh" sells out the Garden and has critics arguing about 7s vs 9s, I’ll take more slosh.

That's odd because, in my experience, her fans are mostly postgraduate women either entering their careers or furthering their education (Master's/Ph.D) for their careers. They're actually quite pleasant to chat with and would probably make for lovely girlfriends

The emilyspammer isn’t going away unless people make him feel consistently unwelcome. He’s deeply mentally unwell, has unlimited time to spam the board, has been obsessed with emily for over a decade, and has dedicated samefag personas that he “interacts” with in his threads. If someone else posts in his threads he will spam images or links until he can create a new general. Someone recently posted some Chester Bennington pics in his linkin park thread and he spammed it with emily pics until it reached bump limit, and also created duplicate emily “dead sara” threads and “favorite rockstar” threads to keep spamming constantly. It’s fascinating as much as it’s disturbing.

The worst waifu spammer was the killing joke/echo and the bunnymen/morrissey obsessed person. Thankfully they are gone now. The emily armstrong schizo is the worst currently. They are constantly posting and have very thin skin

>Are you sure the second one was a different dude and not just the first one
The second one was just a troll that liked to fuck with the board for attention, I recognized his style from other troll attempts

Maggie Rogers is so fucking whitebread she can't even work up a decent hateboner. On 4chan!

Her cover of Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl she did with Sylvan Esso was trash.

You just know...

In all seriousness, that guy is probably just a friend or fellow musician. Wouldn't mind her being a coalburner, though. Less offensive than a lesbian.
>>
>>128058003
not sure about the last part. lesbians are not right in the head, but they don't get penetrated by strange dicks at least.
>>
>>128058028
She apparently co-wrote the song "Want Want" with Holden Jaffe. I suspect that tune is autobiographical, and if she, she likes it Chosen as well.

You’re just as annoying as him constantly complaining about him. You also literally live on this board and reply to him immediately every time.

You are a homosexual.

Just listened to Now That the Light Is Fading. Don't really care for "On + Off" or even "Alaska" now that it's overplayed among her fans, but "Dog Years" and "Better" are highlights for me:

For me it's that her vocals are extremely un-special. She has virtually no presence as a performer. It is frustrating to listen to
>>
>>128060997
Huh, I actually find that more reserved quality a strong part of her charm. She isn't trying to be a diva. She's just being her.

I'll admit HIiaPL isn't for me and much of that album is kinda ass, but Notes from the Archive, The Echo, Blood Ballet and, of course, Surrender are all wonderful albums. Even the highly commercial single "Love You for a Long Time" is genuinely pleasant.
