What does /mu/ think about The Grateful Dead?
They’re cool if you’re into CIA bands, no judgement
>>128072352Should have done more disco
>>128072352big fan of 72-74 dead>>128072378https://youtu.be/GSabS0U_ZZ0?si=X-89BG0iHH1DQQs0
>>128072641>72-74hellllllssss yes brother, thats the sweet spot
>>128072352Honkey Tonk garbo
I love the US government.
>>128072352I think that the Allman Brothers are an objectively better jam band
>>128072352One of the most overrated bands ever. If they hadn't done songs about drugs no one would have ever heard of them.
>>128072782>>128072368
>>128072352Cool logo and name wasted on shit music
>>128072352Music for getting promising young minds arrested on drugs charges.
>>128072352they were pretty bad. Not much talent, but many drugs. That's it!Not ONE MEMORABLE SONG
>>128072352Honestly I don't get the whole "jam band" thing and their live performance are not that kino but still pretty good band imo.
>>128075290Box of Rain is pretty good
I like Gov't Mule. Would I like Grateful Dead?
>>128077567>I don't get the whole "jam band" thingYou dont like improvisational music? Whats to get? its music.
History of the Grateful Dead Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice) [Warner Bros., 1973]This is clearly a Pigpen memorial album although the Dead would never be so mundane as to put it that way. Recorded live at the Fillmore East February 1970 and you had to be there. I know because I was. C+
>>128078131The Mule is a lot harder rocking than the Dead even tho they cover the dead sometimeshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZB2VvKGidY
Virtue signalling the band.Well it's not exactly this, but in the 60s and 70 you MUST say you like them to show how hip you were.
>>128072352me and the few other deadheads of this board enjoy discussing our favorite shows on the occasional GD threads, i can understand tho why they are not liked by the other /mu/tants, as Ken Kesey put it "you're either on the bus or not" and for people such opinionated as 4channers, not caring for a band often translates in "i hate them" although they've barely listened to anything from their discography; i acknowledge tho that their music is definitely not for everyone.>>128072641for me it's 1970; the 2/13, 5/2 and 9/19 shows includes the peak of their jamming imo (the other one on 5/2, dark star on 9/19 and both on 2/13)>>128073079i'm a fan of the allman brothers but their peak timeframe was so limited they didnt have the chance to explore beyond the same few songs, also they were not as extendedly recorded as the dead. The jams from elizabeth reed, whipping post, you dont love me and mountain jam from the fillmore east march 71 shows are worthy of the best Grateful dead's.Duane Allman was technically more skilled than Garcia although less creative imo but he could have made so much great music had he not died so young
I like a fair amount of their studio albums and hate most of their live stuff, with the exception of the original releases like Skull and Roses and Europe 72. I don't like jam band shit and Jerry Garcia is not an interesting enough guitarist to warrant his wankery on the bootleg live stuff
>>128072352It's really really really boring. Some of the most repetitive music out there. I guess if you're only into jamming out, and positively nothing else, aside from maybe feeling part of a "community", then it should be right up your alley. It's garbage.
>>128078783>in the 60s and 70 you MUST say you like them to show how hip you wereWhy do 15 year olds pretend to know exactly what it was like to live in the past?
>>128072352ive listened to a lot, all eras and lineups, however nowadays i really dont venture out after 74 except for the acoustic performances.in fact i think the dead is a really, really great acoustic band. they've shouldve played more acoustic and they were really onto something with acoustic half sets in around 70
>>128080032And that, my friends, is why I have and will continue to characterize The Grateful Dead as exactly what they are: EDM for boomers.
>>128080032>most repetitive music out there>most of it completely improvised and different every nightAre all zoomers this fucking retarded?
Make a GD thread on Steve Hoffman Forum and watch it turn into an instant 100 page shitstorm without fail.
>>128080168Yes
>>128080168>it's improvised therefore it's not repetitive Yeah that's not how that works. Improvised soloing over extended repetitive sections does not make for inherently interesting music. And don't even pull the "you don't know what you're talking about" angle I've been present for no less than a dozen dead tribute acts. >it's just a tribute thoughDoesn't matter. Rabid fans praise it as if it were the real deal
>>128080168why are you pretending the grateful dead are some jazz combo? it's honky tonk shit
>>128080471>plays an entirely different set list every nightWhy are you pretending you have a clue? Its many thing but repetitive is not one if them. you are a fucking retard.
>>128080370>extended repetitive sections>just makes things up>does not make for inherently interesting musicHow the fuck would you know? you have incredibly shitty and infantile tastes making your opinion completely worthless>I've been present for no less than a dozen dead tribute acts.lol. zoomers cant meme
>>128080712>How the fuck would you knowBecause I have good taste and have subjected myself to hours and hours of their music, finding it occasionally interesting but overall excessively monotonous. They have one trick: loud section/soft section. There's little variance beyond that. It's unbelievably boring music. I'd suggest arguing with a wall but you'd have to have an argument in the first place to do so.
>>128072352honestly in contention for worst fucking band of all time like there are nobody garage acts that are worse. but no band ever went further than the dead with less good music.
>>128081128i don't know what you listened to where you think dynamics were the focus. they're shows have a lot of variety. blues and country songs with some ballads in the first set and longer spacey jams or proggy rock in the second setsthe only monotony would be extended versions of songs, and even then there is a lot of interesting harmonic variation and interplay in the jam sections
>>128080032Agreed, a few album songs are decent
>>128081795You really think zoomers can pay attention to all those details?
I like the Sublime cover of Scarlet Begonias. Beyond that I don't care for them
>>128081128>Because I have good tasteclearly you dont lol. You're a try hard who thinks he knows but in reality is just a fucking retard
>>128072352how to get into them
>>128083096bash your head against the wall until you lose 50 iq points
>>128086367Thats what the drugs are for
>>128072352Psyop band for trustfund midwits
>>128073303Cope harder, faggot. The Dead might be the greatest American rock band in history. Sorry you don’t get it.
>>128079901>as Ken Kesey put it "you're either on the bus or not" The Dead are just polarizing in general. They've always had fans/haters from all walks of life. Fucking Tucker Carlson is a Deadhead. Jerry's firmly apolitical/anarchist stance meant he didn't care who you were or what you believed just whether you felt the vibe or not. It makes sense that 4chan, like everywhere else is 50/50 on them. Even this thread seems split down the middle in opinion
Drugs help with the relaxation and listening. But its incredible on its own, I also play guitar so im kinda biased. Never was compelled to check them out till recently. And they are genuinely impressive on many levels, but mainly sound. Also Jerry was probably a fed a some point, but at least he was the sells you lsd kind
>>128089015Based, zoomies btfo. Fuck Phish as well
They're not bad once you accept that they were really always folkies and not rockers.
I unironically only really like Dark Star. There's a version I had downloaded way back in the day, but I forget which live version.
>>128091485Exactly. They're inherently polarizing, you either get it (or your mind / soul gets enjoyment / meaning / ecstasy from it) or you don't. There's no point in convincing someone with the type of personality or brain who wouldn't like it, and you wouldn't want to convince them anyways, because it really all operates on a sort of collective egregore (including the band(s) and the whole community) that is on a certain wavelength and functions in a certain way. So it's inherently filtering and self-regulating / perpetuating. But as a result the culture keeps going because there is always a portion of the population that is going to have the right combination of neurotype and spirritual makeup to be into itI was always bound to be a deadhead because I was essentially on that wavelength already as a kid. You basically have to be sort of a weird nature child muppet at heart. Which some people will scoff and say that's ridiculous, but... exactly. We like having our little cult away from everything else.
>>128072368A CIA band designed to make prophets. Apparently if you play major chords at fellas on fistfuls of LSD, more than a small amount see God.
