Talking Heads 77 [Sire, 1977]
A debut LP will often seem overrefined to habitues of a band's scene, so it's not surprising that many CBGBites felt betrayed when bits of this came out sounding like Sparks or Yes. Personally, I was even more put off by lyrics that fleshed out the Heads' post-Jonathan Richman, so-hip-we're-straight image; when David Byrne says "don't worry about the government," the irony is that he's not being ironic. But the more I listen the more I believe the Heads set themselves the task of hurdling such limitations, and succeed. Like Sparks, these are spoiled kids, but without the callowness or adolescent misogyny; like Yes, they are wimps, but without vagueness or cheap romanticism. Every tinkling harmony is righted with a screech, every self-help homily contextualized dramatically, so that in the end the record proves not only that the detachment of craft can coexist with a frightening intensity of feeling--something most artists know--but that the most inarticulate rage can be rationalized. Which means they're punks after all.

Nice of you to not include the grade so we can't tell wether he likes it or not because his writing is waffling without a point

Serious question, do people actually value his and Scaruffis opinions or are they just used for trolling and contraian threads?

Christgau threads could and sometimes do invite some decent chat, usually when it's not something deeply entrenched in the rock canon. Unfortunately they're also derailed by seething maniacs obsessed with interracial cuckolding, or Fantanofags who skip to the rating and commence their little meltdowns (and let's not forget that one adorable kid who thinks he's "above" critics of any kind). That said, Xgauposting clearly started as bait, and has largely remained bait, but going forward I hope we can change that into something less antagonistic. The guy has reviewed a shitload of records over the decades, and a Christgau post is as good a starting point for music discussion as any.

At the end of the day I like what I like and no critic can interfere with that, I have my own angles, but I do enjoy reading Christgau's opinions, even when I disagree. Partly for historical reasons as well: it's astonishing that so much weight and thought--in terms of money, print space, man-hours--was once given to popular music. Scaruffi is just a lolcow.

This guy thinks like such an intellectualist cunt. I can't stand him or people who think like him

It's not that I don't see any merit in a culture of people who try to think deeply about art or music, it's just that said culture is made up with these cosmopolitan intellectual types with the most annoying viewpoint ever. I fucking detest them. I hate their faces, even, which give away everything about them

you're in no position to call other people pseuds if you're reaching for obscure synonyms to pair with 'cunt'

ranting about christgau when in fact there are tons of fantano threads lol

didn't they just hate him because he didn't like metal or something?
>>
>>128097652
Cunt doesn't have that meaning in the US that it maybe does in the UK. Intellectualist is just accurate for me.
>>
>>128098640
no critics in his day liked metal
