What happened to this place? I frequented from 2008-2012 and it is unrecognizable today. Just scrolling right now: multiple tswift threads, olivia rodrigo general, a tove lo thread, Lily allen, like 8 or 9 kpop threads. This used to be THE place for underground music. Now it’s like TMZ and Rolling Stone had a baby. What went wrong? Why do people even post here when they can get the same info off some normie site like US TODAY or TMZ? A fall from grace this bad should be studied and put in text books, but the root cause needs to be identified first. Pic related, an artifact from old mu that you probably wont see posted again for a decade.
>>
MCRfag, Nirvanafag and COA poster have been let loose
>>
people who actually cared about music left /mu/ several years ago and went to other places like rateyourmusic
why would anyone put actual conversational effort into this culture war hellhole in 2025?
>>
It seems I forgot to mention the Madonna thread. Truly riveting discussion going on here.
>>
>>128206707
RYM was a thing in 2010 and this place still had music discussion. What shifted this place to top 100 pop?
>>
YOU FOUND WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR WHINER
>>

read my post again
>>
>>128206973
Im looking for the sharethread with mediafire links to underground shoegaze idm fusion albums nigger.
>>
>>128206984
I dont see culture war threads. I see people gooning over vapid pop stars with music created by ghost writers to appeal to lowest common denominator (which is appearently present day mu)
>>
>>128206582
try making a thread about cirrent undergeound music and see what happens.
>>
>>128206686
Dude, go f yourself, I might be the "mcrfag" but at least I don't like Olivia/Taylor Swift, and never post on those threads. K-poop, Taylor, Olivia etc... are the problem, not MCR (1 of the top 10 greatest rock bands ever, though admittedly not underground in the slightest)

mods and jannies both enable and in some cases participate in waifu and kpop threads instead of sending them to /trash/ where they belong
no currently active moderators care about 4chan and many of them only discovered it post-2016
the only reason any oldfags have stuck around is because you're here forever
>>
>>128207502
You deserve to be raped and beaten to death for the supreme retardation you start weekly here.
>>
>>128206582
Poptimism happened where now the highest rated albums are commerical pop instead of indie rock.

I remember when even rym was mostly classic rock, indie rock and heavy metal.

Now even it's now mostly hip-hop, female pop, and transgender album of the week.
>>
>>128206582
K-pop saved this board from obscurity.
>>
>>128207309
Is there even current underground music?
>>
>>128207541
Just like endless infomercials saved cable TV?

>Lily allen
She wrote a song about us, it would be stranger if there were no threads on her at the moment
>>
>>128207542
all i know is you definitely won't find out about it posting on here
>>
>>128207605
We can continue this discussion in one of the 9,000 threads you will make after this
>>
>>128207542
Yeah. You gotta use a shovel though because it's underground.
>>
>>128206582
>What happened
Indie rock basically died so......
>>
>>128206582
I WANNA SEE OLIVIA's RODRIGO
>>
>>128207639
The only “underground” music I know about is 100Gecs clone ear rape, and fake FL studios shoegaze. Zoomers completely dropped the torch that was passed down to them.
>>
alt music scene got bought by Democrats and went full homo politics, then the audience beat itself to death by being offended.
>>
>>128207658
A “you must jerk off before making a thread” rule would save this website.
>>
>>128207684
seems more like your problem for being out of touch and years behind on trends.
>>
>>128207723
One thing is certain, looking here is not going to get me back “in touch” or on “the trend.” Im curious what “the real” underground music you are talking about is. I expect it to be your specific flavor of zoomer slop that just isnt hyperpop or shoegaze.
>>
>>128207761
>looking here is not going to get me back “in touch” or on “the trend.”
yep, so don't act like you know anything when this garbage website is your only source.
>>
>>128206707
>>128206806
Also rym is way worse now too
>>
>>128207778
Can you even read, damn you really are a zoomer lmao. In the very first post I said posted here from 2008-2012. This site isnt a source of anything for me except a laugh every 12months or so at how bad things have gotten and how much worse they continue to get. Now enlighten us with your zoom zoom garbage trve “underground” music.
>>
>>128207818
can you even read? at what point did i say anything about knowing any underground music?
>>
>>128207794
How so?
>>
>>128207828
Holy fuck you are actually illiterate. I think we are getting a breakthrough to the root of the issue.
>>
>>128207865
my point was that no one here knows jackshit about underground music. i think that point still stands.
>>
>>128207982
But I literally just gave two examples of underground genres and why they suck.
>>
I love underground rock bands like Geese and Black Midi and MJ lenderman!
>>
>>128208043
Except they're not underground.
>>
>>128208075
This but unironically.
>>
>>128208109
Goddamn children are incapable of defining anything. If some hyperpop shoegaze project with 2000 followers isnt underground then you dont know what that word means.
>>
>>128208043
hyperpop is dead as fuck. you are still living in 2019.
>>
>>128208400
Just because zoomers rename their recycled shitty genre every month doesnt mean frutarded aero or soilpunk isnt just repackaged hyperpop.
>>
>>128208490
stop trying to talk about new music when you don't even listen to any of it.
>>
>>128208504
You have pidgeon holed yourself in a weird hill to die on where you explicitly cant name any new music because you admittedly dont know it, but you are also convinced it cant be what im talking about.
>>
>>128206686
COA poster is based.
>>
>>128207613
She wrote it about the site not the board
>>
>>128209041
your pathetic meme will never catch on
>>
>>128208918
Is that your way of asking for recommendations? Maybe try they are gutting a body of water or all under heaven and go from there
>>
>>128209409
> shoegaze band from freehold, new jersey
You actual nigger. About 20 posts ago you roasted me for saying the new underground music is all either hyperpop or shoegaze. Clearly illiteracy is the issue here.
>>
>>128209563
I’m not the guy you were arguing with
>>
>>128209280
COA
>>
>>128209639
Then why are you arguing with me while proving me right?
>>
>>128210216
you seem very defensive
>>
>>128210251
Because I spent half the thread arguing that the new music coming out is rehashed shoegaze or hyperpop, while people acted like I was clueless… only to be given shoegaze as an example of new music coming out. I feel like im in bizarro world.
>>
>>128210645
doesn't that just prove everyone on this site is equally out of touch?
>>
>>128210658
Nah im pretty sure there isnt some secret underground scene thats a goldmine that no one here is aware of. I think it just proves that this era is creatively and culturally bankrupt.
>>
Many different things coincided to kill /mu/. Streaming made music much more accessible, both in availability and for expanding your taste, which killed sharethreads and rec threads. /pol/ culture war bullshit got out of control and drove away lots of people who were sick of it. The hipster music elitist culture died out. In general the internet has homogenized a lot of subcultures, so you don't get as many people passionate about that kind of stuff anymore. This left /mu/ as a wasteland to be populated by gossips and masturbators.
>>
>>128206582
>what happened guys?
Reddit invasion
>>
>>128206582
bots, dark money, propaganda, phone posters
>>
>>128211256
it doesn't prove that at all. just because the ~30 old people still using /mu/ in 2025 don't know about something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
>>
>>128207512
This is the real answer. If properly moderated this board could be useful again
>>
>>128206582
Tbh, I'd rather music completely died out/turned into AI, than continue to have rap/kendrick at the top. Music is already mostly dead, the 2000s were its last breaths, now cRap/shit-hop, neo-country, poop, is all the mainstream/most people is into

I was browsing /mu/ at the same time you were, OP. A few notable things I remember
>Tripfags, tripfags everywhere
>Fucking LAZARE
>The actual rise of MLP, /mlp/, Lee, and bronies as a whole
>Musical March Madness (arguably the peak of /mu/ culture)
>When Death Grips basically dethroned Neutral Milk Hotel as the meme artist of /mu/
>The fawning over Lil B, us using "based" on THIS BOARD ONLY as a musical reference and not a political statement which it would later become
>GO TO BED JOEL (DEADMAU5 on /mu/ lol)

I look back fondly on that period of this site. It felt like a second rennisance, you know? We all talk about 06' and 07' as being the "peak" of 4chan's culture, but I think 2010 - 2013 was a second golden age for this website as a whole.
>>
>>128206582
There's the Maggiefag.
