I don't know where you heard that but they are amazing live. some of their songs imo are better live than the album version e.g. Reflex, The Fear, Hideout. also Live Volume 1 is their most popular album.

i heard it with my own ears, ive spent a lot of time listening to their day/night album which made me watch some concert footage where they sounded like crap to be completely honest. they dont really nail the harmonies when theres too much going on around them which is understandable but its part of what keeps the music from falling apart

well yeah concert footage from some rando in the crowd is gonna sounds like shit. try seeing them live! or listen to the official live recordings at least. for example listen to Something Greater from the Red Rocks recording on their page, or Hideout from Funkhaus Berlin, or the chorus of iknowhowifeel from Live Volume 1, see if you reconsider how "they don't nail the harmonies"
