In the olden days no one was playing guitar direct into the PA system thru a digital modeller. To play live you had to bring your own amp down to the venue.
A man's amp was an extension of his personality, it was part of his identity... you could tell a lot about a musician just by looking at the gear they were using as it would give you an idea their tastes in tone were and what they were going for musically.
All those days are gone. With the advent of digital modelling, and sure, a lot of it sounds good, but you still can't beat plugging into a marshall and turning it up!

Bassists have been doing it since the 2000s, but most of them just used a DI box to get an Ampeg sound.

Back then your amp and pedalboard was treated the way Greasers would treat their cars back in the the 50s. A lot of time and money was spent getting in search of getting the right tone...

To be fair so are modellers. Also every guitarist I know still uses an amp
