>Like many other rock songs that were written & released decades ago, as time goes by more & more listeners have deemed the lyrics to The Rolling Stones' Brown Sugar inappropriate, offensive, politically incorrect, etc. While the song's lyrics do depict some of the horrific reality of slavery, the song isn't an endorsement of those acts, nor an endorsement of the institution of slavery. The lyrics may make some listeners uncomfortable but the song is not a racist diatribe.>Songwriters, authors of books, writers of movie scripts, etc. often use first person narrative in their works as it tends to add weight, depth, seriousness, etc. to the topic(s) at hand. Obviously, if a reader doesn't recognize the lyricist/author intentionally employed the first-person narrative technique to help emphasize the seriousness, weight, depths, etc. of the song or book's topic(s) they're more likely to assume the characters' unpalatable, offensive, despicable, non-PC, etc. statements align with those of the author/lyricist.>In my experience folks who insist the lyrics to Brown Sugar are offensive, non-PC, etc. and that Jagger is a racist (and/or was a racist back in the late '60s) haven't made much of an effort to recognize from whom the various statements in the song are delivered, and juxtapose the song with some of the literary pieces that have long been regarded as deliberately, blatantly & unquestionably racist.
>>128232024Brown Sugar? More like Neopolitan Ice Cream. At least the strawberry and chocolate. I'm the vanilla.
Now that that's over they can put this back in their live setlists.
>Contrary to popular belief, the cover art does not depict Mick Jagger but instead an unnamed and likely gay male model Warhol hired for the photoshoot.[2]
>>128232024>Is that...a transgressive (at the time) rock band...making a song that's...actually transgressive and dangerous in its subject matter??? AAAAAH I'M GOING INSANE, TRANSGRESSION CAN ONLY BE TIED TO SOCIOPOLITICAL VIEWS THAT I ENDORSENo wonder rock music is dead
>The new Rolling Stones album has been called by some racist and sexist. What's your take on that?>I say our next album is going to be twice as racist and sexist as this one was and it's going to be even better.
