If you're into metal, what's YOUR take on why nu- and alt-metal got to surpass metal in popularity and have remained on top till today? In the current spotify "metal" top 10 monthly listeners ranking, 7 bands fit said descriptors: Linkin Park (#1), System of a Down (#3), Evanescence (#4), Limp Bizkit (#5), Disturbed (#7), Deftones (#8), Slipknot (#10). For scale, the remaining 3 bands in the top 10 are Metallica (#2), Black Sabbath (#6), and Ozzy Osbourne (#9).

>>128235778because their songs are catchier and they sing about more relateable topics, and they have more cross gender appeal since their music usually has heavy parts and softer more sensitive parts that appeal to women.
>>128235778>Ozzy taking up two of the three "real metal" spotsZamn
>>128235938/thread
>>128235778>>128235938Yup. Nu-metal got popular because it was designed to be popular. Metal is scary and intense, nu-metal is emotionally vulnerable and relatable. The singers sing actual melodies, the songs have hooks. The bands were willing to try new things and didn't take themselves as seriously. Metal isn't supposed to be popular, its scary and difficult on purpose, for artistic reasons. How is this even a question? Linkin Park and SOAD were produced by super mainstream ultrapopular producers who knew how to make pop hits. For the record (lol) I listen to both numetal and technical deathgrind thrashcore blah blah. SOAD and Disturbed were a stepping stone to heavier metal when I was a kid, but stuff like Nile just sounded like meaningless noise at first. Metal isn't easy to listen to
>>128235778>Evanescence How? They have one (1) meme song that is widely known, that can't be enough to to get them that many listeners.
>>128235938This. Alternative-to-metal is heavier/metallic alternative rock, and is often a melting pot of various influences. Korn didn't have metal in mind when they made their early albums. Some alt-metal (Helmet, Quicksand) makes more sense as post-hardcore as well.Alt-metal is a chimera of rock, pop, sometimes funk, and what's generalized as "heavy music". That can make for good music, but you're not going to get an Abigor out of such a stylistic compromise.
>>128236202black metal is my life
>>128236115>The singers sing actual melodies, the songs have hooksBut that's nothing new in metal? Hell any classic heavy metal band or glam/hair metal band is exactly like that. Stuff like early Korn, Iowa Slipknot, early Mudvayne, Snot and Coal Chamber are not very melodic and harder to get into than something like Metallica's black album.
>>128236120Long story short- females
>>128236223Was there glam/hair metal happening during the time period we are discussing? Also none of those bands you mentioned were popular when they were heavy and scary. Their later breakout albums had melodies and hooks
>>128236221Ditto.>>128236223Exactly. Agreed completely.
If Nu-Metal is so popular, radio friendly and an easy formula for success, why are 99% of all new metal acts of the last 15 years shitty generic metalcore bands?
>>128236283The emancipation of dissonance
>>128236223Glam metal was very popular.
>>128236259I would argue The Darkness are glammy and they were big from around ‘03
>>128235778extreme metal will never be popular, due to being too harsh and having harsh vocals, most popular genres like pop, country, hip hop feature regular human voicesits a cultural thing though. but this is why trad heavy, nu metal and alt metal are the most popular (as well as modern metalcore which is just pop-metal with breakdowns), its acessibility
>>128236705>extreme metal will never be popularThrash Metal is considered Extreme Metal and it was pretty popular.
>>128235778Nu-Metal is more of a subgenre of Rock than it is a subgenre of Metal. There is still a very clear barrier between metal and Nu-Metal and Rock.

been giving Nu an honest try, these are what i like so far
I don't consider SOAD nu-metal
>>128236769Honestly only through Metallica. Every Megadeth and Slayer fan is also a Metallica fan and was originally a Metallica fan, they were that good and it’s because from Ride The Lightning they’ve always had those softer songs which aren’t as thrashy and it works as a palette cleanser and nobody else has been close to pulling it off. Yeah I agree with you
>>128237491Serj is on Snot's second album, They copy Korn's Nursery Rhyme and Acronym shtick and Sugar is the most Kornesque spastik bit you can muster. It's the one folk-influnced nu-metal band, but nu nonetheless

For example, isn't Ozzy on that album too, even? >They copy Korn's Nursery RhymeWhere exactly?>and Acronym shtickWhat?>Sugar is the most Kornesque spastik bit you can musterWhy? (I wouldn't know).>It's the one folk-influnced nu-metal band, but nu nonethelessTo me they have nu-metal characteristics but it's not this genre that defines them, also they have one album which is more nu-metal (Storaged Melodies) and probably the one where all the nu-metal songs by them that I can think of are. But the other albums sound more alternative. What defines nu-metal to you?
>>128235778as a non-metal listener and someone who dislike metalheads and metal cultureSystem of a Down and Deftones are fantasticthe rest of those are whateverMetallica and Black Sabbath are respected just becuz of their fame and OG status, but are outdated
you missed Bon Jovi (glam metal)

i honestly prefer butt rock now, like puddle of mudd is pretty good when you don't have an indie nerd screaming in your ear that it's misogynist
metal is a weird genre, real true metal heads dont like it when metal goes mainstream, when metal goes mainstream it gets watered down and filled with posers and touristsmetal has gone mainstream twice, hair metal, and nu metal, and each time actual metal heads were off making thrash metal or somethingNu metal is just the most recent time metal was mainstream so normies know it better

>>128239159Yeah, I used to hate on nu-shit but now I'm even sorta happy it exists. Not because I enjoy it or it speaks to me but precisely 'cause it's a more casual, superficial kinda metal which I can put on whenever I have nothing particular I wanna listen to if I still want something "metal-sounding". And what does it matter if it's popular or not? Popularity says nothing about the music itself.
>>128235778Because it's (mostly) commercial trash and relatively new school, so zoomers don't feel disconnected from it and 40 year old boomers feel nostalgic for it.
I hate it because most of it is just whiny millenials weeping about how le sad they are.Metal losing its masculine grit was a fucken disaster.
>>128237491Yep. Maybe their first album, that's about it. They were of the scene, not so much the genre itself.>>128238235I can get snobbish about my metal, and I like SOAD.
>>128242472>I can get snobbish about my metal, and I like SOADThat's exactly the point. Retards who separate SOAD from Nu Metal and say they are alt metal and not Nu Metal just because they like SOAD but still want to shit on Nu Metal.
>>128237172It means he gets 75% of the money from SOAD lmao
>>128237561Testament have some great ballads
It's fun, high energy and doesn't take it seriously which is what 90% of people want to listen to while on their commute or daily tasks.
>>128235778This reminds me of when robb flynn from machine head said "who the fuck listens to Dope any more" in a rant and the Dope front man pointed out that Dope has way more monthly spotify listeners than machine head. KWAB
>>128235778Same reason why you hear popular rap and hip-hop songs that have some chick singing melodically as the chorus: they are watered-down variants of the genre concocted to draw in white people who would otherwise be too scared of listening to the songs without dismissing them immediately.
>>128243690>doesn't take it seriously>OH TURKEY YOU DID A HECKIN GENOCIDE OH YOU RAPIST SODOMITE LIAR TURKS
>>128235778For whats it worth, most metal subgenres, especially when delving into the more extreme or experimental ones, are not accessible by design. So it doesn't come as a surprise to me that the few subgenres that did want to be accessible end up being the ones with plenty of bands that are still relevant in the mainstream.
>>128239159Nu metal was more the era of "real" metal being death or black metal. Thrash was already old hat by then.
