where/how do you draw the line between hard rock and heavy metal?
metal makes my balls feel heavier
>>128238340It's determined by hairstyle
>>128238340hard rock is like guns n rosesmetal is like metallica
>>128238340Deep Purple is the dividing line. any riffier and heavier, it's metal.
>>128238340Electric guitar solos = heavy metalNo electric guitar solos = hard rock
>>128238340Listen to Cheap Trick Self TitledThank me later.
Post examples, this is metalhttps://youtu.be/OjyZKfdwlngHard rockhttps://youtu.be/fTTsY-oz6Go
>>128238340You don't, somewhere in between you have heavy rock, stuff such as Kashmir, Burn and Summertime blues
Judas priest first record was basically hard rock, following that they became metal. Thats a good division for the sound. Then you can compare something like Led Zeppelin which is primarily hard rock with a lot of early metal motifs throughout until they did Achilles Last Stand which is straight metal (honorable mention to In My Time of Dying where they rock as hard as hard rock can go). Sabbath was more hard rock until Master of Reality and then Vol 4 was very metal. I also like to mention Third Uncle by Brian Eno because despite being in 1974 where metal was already a thing it has a lot of metal motifs that would later become widespread and over used. I'm a huge Zeppelin fan though you can put on Good Times Bad Times or How Many More Times and easily hear the birth of metal.
>>128238616thats idiotic electric guitar solos are all over bands that were "hard rock"
>>128238708Sabbath's Paranoid is THE defining heavy metal album...
>>128238340The line is thin because metal is a whole motherfucking culture that's hard-coded into the cosmos, and hard rock is just rock music that's hard, but sometimes metal bands make rock music in their own style and rock bands borrow metal elements (not just musical) into their music.
>>128238722its proto metal in the same way deep purple and led zeppelin were, its just more "metal" than those. its just hard rock coming very close to metal. Master of Reality is when the change really happens.
what about glam metal, can it really be considered metal? by this metric Bon Jovi is metal but it just feels wrong. I used to think they were hard rock acts, but they are clearly different from the hard rock acts of the 70s. Scorpions is another band that seems to flick frequently in between.
>>128238756the s/t is the proto-metal album (with the title track being a fully formed metal song). Paranoid is a genre codifying album and still directly influential on new metal bands.>>128238802it's on a case by case basis. WASP are definitely a metal band.
>>128238340Metal is heavy, Psychedelic and Blues-based Rock music structured in either minor-key, modal or chromatic scales with power chords, quick picking and galloping riffs playing heavily into the sound. Bands that don't utilize them in any fashion are rarely considered Metal. The tonal centers of the Metal riffs in each composition are not fixed but progress over the course of it. The rhythm guitar is therefore not a merely a rhythm instrument but the lead one. Even if you're shredding, there can be no Metal without a rhythm guitar. If Robbing the Graveyard and Raping the Dead from Satan's Massacre is any proof, you construct Metal music simply with your amp and guitar with no bass or percussion needed at all:https://youtu.be/WoOsT-vtS4Qhttps://youtu.be/C4zRPo6pPBMIt’s these reasons I refuse to dub Black Sabbath's first two LPs as Metal. That started with Master of Reality and every album since that time. Sabbath's most Metal albums under Ozzy were Sabotage and Vol. 4 with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath as a runner-up. “The Wizard” may have that one riff (I'd argue it's a Hard Rock riff), but even so, claiming the debut is the first Metal album is inane.Just listen to “Ride the Sky” by Lucifer's Friend which dropped in November of 1970, almost a year before the world would hear “Children of the Grave”. That song alone is heavier than most of what Sabbath made until that “Master of Reality”. Follow that up with “Deceiver” by Judas Priest and you’ll notice some parallels:https://youtu.be/GX5uGJ4easkhttps://youtu.be/yELpVTsWmpIWhat also can't be overstated is the significance of the heavier side of Psychedelic Rock from the early '70s with bands all over the world forging the foundations for Heavy Metal. Just check out Buffalo, Sir Lord Baltimore or Cool Feet:https://youtu.be/dGxflt2mbpAhttps://youtu.be/MOeOC16Jm9ghttps://youtu.be/DX2qq8C7uuE
>>128238340it's all a matter of attitude>hard rock = we rule and don't have to do shit>heavy metal = we rule and are gonna fuck shit up
if it has sex-having lyrics, it's not metal
>>128240293Lyrics about fucking rotting corpses for example? That's not metal?
>>128240721only a non sex haver would write shit like that, so
>>128240842It's still sex even if the other party is a corpse :^)
>>128238340>when I feel heavy metal>WOO HOO >and I'm pins and I'm needlesif it makes you feel like pins and needles (tingling sensation) then it's heavy metal at least that's my understanding
why does it even matter
>>128240915it doesn't matter really because both hard rock and metal are the peak of music
>>128240293https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXsaDaCVDBEleave the hall
I like it: heavy metalI don't care for it: hard rockFor example, despite displaying all the objective qualia of a hard rock outfit, The Sword is actually a heavy metal band. Because I like them.
>>128241152how does one like metal but not appreciate hard rock?
The line is Dokken
>>128238340hard rock -pussy haversmetal- circle jerks
>>128240907In other words morphine is metal.
>>128238601pretty good standard actually
>>128241373this is a question I've been asking myself since the 90s. people find out I like metal and they try to accommodate me by putting on Bon Jovi or something like that. appreciate the effort but I'd almost rather listen to folk music. like I feel I should enjoy motorhead but they're not usually metal enough for anything more than background music to me (not that they're bad, just not to my taste). put some drum n bass or whatever you want on instead, you're not going to let me put nasum on it's not even the cheesy girls-motorbikes-and-booze lyrics you only find in hard rock, metal has equally cringe gore / satan / etc stuff. but you can't discern the lyrics in the typical metal delivery which does help. muscially hard rock tends to be more nice clean pentatonics everywhere but I want some catharsis which better suits the moodier bluesier tones you get in metal
>>128242601Have you tried shoegaze?
>>128242601bluesier tones in metal? wtf are you talking about. metal as it progressed distanced itself further and further from the blues.
>>128242630I think he's saying the only metal people actually want to listen to is more rockish but he has the zoomer fear of rocking.
>>128238340If it sounds like something normies would listen to, it's hard rock.If it sounds autistic sometimes even gay, it's heavy metal
>>128238340different riffing style and more distortion
>>128242601please tell me you at least like Deep Purple In Rock. it's basically metal
For me, this is the least metal album that can still be considered metal. Anything less intense than this is just rock.
>>128238340Metal uses more notes. E.g. the opening riff of Master of Puppets uses all 12 notes. Rock mostly sticks to simple scales.
Its mostly based on lyrics and aesthetics
>>128238340Led Zeppelin and Cream hard rockBlack Sabbath metal
>>128238616Uhm, Alice in Chains?
