Pic is a comment from a thread about to drop off the board, a response to an OP asking if his 1.2k album collection is big or small.I know it was just a guess but hearing 1000 albums in 25 years means checking out about 3 new albums a month. Which doesn't feel like very much music to be honest, especially for someone discussing music on a board devoted to it. I mean there's effectively an infinite amount of music available in that there’s more than anyone has time to listen to, from all time periods and genres and from all over the world. Wouldn't the average normie hear more than 3 albums a month?Only giving a fuck about ~100 albums is wild too, I remember years ago making one of those Top 100 Albums charts and it was agony deciding what to leave out. Obviously the poster isnt around to ask but it feels like he must be someone who doesn't enjoy a particularly wide range of music, even if he genuinely enjoys the stuff he's into. And yeah it could be shitposting ofc but it wasn't the only post with that kind of POV, just one that put a number to it. There were plenty of other comments like >sounds like a quantity over quality situationSo I ask, how much new music do you listen to per week or month or whatever? How do you do that, ie do you listen to an album "blind" or sample music first then listen to albums in full that you think you'll enjoy? Whats your "hit rate," ie of the new albums you check out, what percentage are you likely to listen to again in the future? That's probably difficult to say, I know. Also, if you still have a collection of music as opposed to streaming how big/how many artists/albums is it?
>>128242936shoving 3 garbage packs a month into your mind can make your life miserable
Last week I listened to 37 new artists and 59 new albums. Some weeks it might be 3.
>>128242965>Last week I listened to 37 new artists and 59 new albums.I refuse to believe that it's possible to do this and actually take in/absorb the music you're listening to in a meaningful way
>>128242950>37 new artists and 59 new albumsok now this is some insane work, complete excess in the opposite direction. but how much of that do you think you'll return to and listen to again?
>>128242936Tbh, I kinda see where he's coming from, I find >80% of music lackluster, if I were asked to choose only 100 albums, knowing every single other one would disappear, I wouldnt have any trouble...
>>128242936spend your 20s discovering new music (thousands of albums)spend the rest of your life listening to what you liked
>>128242980>I refuse to believe that it's possible to do thisit is>and actually take in/absorb the music you're listening to in a meaningful way90% of it is forgotten, and thats ok, the point is discovering new music you like, which you wont forget
>>128243010>I find >80% of music lacklusterdude I probably find like >95% of music lacklustre but that still leaves squillions of really good albums. theres a LOT of music out there
>>128243024I feel like this only applies to people who were in their 20s in the pre-streaming era. Nowadays it's so easy to just stumble upon random music that even after your 20s you really have no excuse not to be continually finding new shit you like.
>>128242986Perhaps 10-15 of the albums. Not more than 20.
>>128243030>90% of it is forgotten, and thats ok, the point is discovering new music you like, which you wont forgetgood point>>128243024I'm old and I still have the same thirst for discovering new (new to me, not necessarily current) music that I had in my teens and 20s I just dont have the time to pursue it like I used to.
>>128242936>So I ask, how much new music do you listen to per week or month or whatever?not much. ive been buying/collecting since 1990 so ive heard alot and i know what i like. i only collect and listen to music from 1982 to 92 mostly. some 70s stuff but thats about it
About a third of what I listen to is new to me, whether thats new artists or new albums by artists I already know, but the actual number goes up and down a lot depending on how much time I have. I end up liking quite a lot of new stuff I listen to because I pretty much always listen to a track or two on youtube to see if its worth dling and listening the whole album>>128243038I still constantly find new music to listen to and I dont use streaming sites at all, except for youtube for quick sampling
I listen to 2 albums a weekm for the last 10 weeks id say 15 were worth listening to.
