They all have their appeals. I personally like that Dummy goes the extra mile in making sure just about every song has a distinct aspect that belongs to that song. S/T, however, is a deeper dive into the bread and butter of their sound and is probably a heartier record for it.

That's everyone else's fault for being creatively bankrupt enough to copy Dummy, plus S/T pulls things back towards that darker atmosphere anyways. Not that Portishead had no idea about that - Geoff Barrow was literally in the room when Massive Attack was making Blue Lines.
