What made 00's rap so uniquely terrible? It actually sounds more dated and out-of-style than a lot of older rap from the 90's.

If I'm being honest, 9/11.

Back in the late 90s, you had a lot of pop slop in rap (think: Will Smith and Diddy). Yet, you also had a lot of lyrical miracle dudes like Mos Def, Common, and Talib Kweli who were rapping about conscious shit with Black Power imagery and such. However, after 9/11 a lot of those lyrical miracle rappers were tacitly blackballed because the conscious stuff was too taboo now that AmeriKKKa was engaged in imperialist wars. So instead we got Ja Rule and ringtone rap.
>>
There was a lot of good stuff in the underground though. But if you're talking about what was played on MTV and mainstream rap radio, then yeah it sucked.

I don't think 9/11 had much to do with it, rappers just wanted to be pop stars.

What made 00s music in general so uniquely terrible you mean? You think rock, pop, and country were any less facepalm-inducing?
>>
>>128253167
Again, 9/11 was the driving factor. A lot of pop songs from the mid 2000s sounded like bland adult contemporary bullshit or dirges because of the cultural environment. No one wanted to be edgy anymore like they had been in the 90s.

the production was the worst, especially that bouncey snap shit. I loved it as a kid though.

Rap music is all garbage but 2000's music was horrible, period.
>>
Cheap dated sounding samples used for the music production. Very little sonic variation outside of menu diving.

Crank Dat was literally made from default Fruity Loop sounds and it was one of the biggest hits of the era, and that whole album uses 80% of those sounds.

lol as us’ you zoomers are starting off with a dumb premise based on ignorance. ‘00s bangers are massively preferable to the shit we’ve gotten last 10 years or so… could name ‘em all day…

It's all corny party rap.
What's really interesting is that this is the stuff that kicked down the door and had whites widely listening to rap for the first time when it's so fucking bad.
I lived my youth through this period and it was unironically traumatizing to me. Every time I turned around there was some aggressively stupid new rap single that all the normies were blaring everywhere. It was like I was in a zombie apocalypse, everything was just 100% dumb 100% of the time. I have fucking retarded 00s rap songs that have long since been forgotten by everyone still burned into my brain.
>>
Overuse of sounds that came default with whatever DAWs were being used at the time while the 90's this was fairly "new" so a little more originality used in production. Rap has always been shity lyrically so idc about that

utter dreck and all of these aged like old milk

>Crank Dat was literally made from default Fruity Loop sounds and it was one of the biggest hits of the era, and that whole album uses 80% of those sounds.
Because the entire point was to be stupid. The fact that it was shitty and retarded was the appeal.
>>
Production was good enough if it made for a cool ringtone
>>
stupid pop has always existed but i don't think it ever got as mind-numbingly awful as bling/ringtone rap

>had whites widely listening to rap for the first time
That was Eminem's Slim Shady LP from 1999. It's comedic but not really "corny party rap".

That was actually catchy and funny at least. People had fun with it because its silly and memorable. Cant imagine anyone nowadays would do something that engaging with something so basic and silly like stock sounds. Now it would sound like a bunch of echo with some douche whining over it
>>
Some of the best albums come from the 2000s.
You have Rhymesayers, Def Jux, Rawkus, Babygrande, Anticon.
You even have great hip hop from UK with Low Life Records.
But in general, all mainstream hip hop from 2000 is garbage.
>>
Y2k rap was kino. Old gucci mane, my favorite are the 2008-2010s trap beats gucci, Waka, chief keef
>>
Its crazy to me how censored music used to be, there's some (clean) songs where 50% of the lyrics are bleeped out. Who listens to that retarded shit
>>
>>128253723
Thats because simplicity becomes genius at a certain level. Theres a lot of very catchy popular beats that are simple as hell
