Who is his modern day counterpart?
Is there still groundbreaking new electronic music?

And what particularly "groundbreaking" was about Aphex Twin? The fact that he used some jungle beats with sampled orchestral instruments on RDJ Album an then someone called it IDM? wow. You forget a little fact there wasn't many artists like Aphex back then, meaning scene was almost deserted, and he was amongst few lucky ones to plant their flag there. He's your "groundbreaking" artist for normies. The true pioneers stay forgotten, as usual. I don't recall any threads about Throbbing Gristle or Einsurzende Neubauten. And there was many more who were really bring some innovation. But they do not exist for normies because there's no sweet melodies and silly mugshots you can turn into a meme. Only thing innovative happened in electronic music is people managed their way to use synthesizers and mix it with their freaky live performance back in late 70s. You want your innovation to be pretty marketed for you in this day and age when people are so spoiled and degenerative they willfully forgot they have all the power at their fingertips and pay $2000 for a thing that looks and sounds like $20 plastic toy only to shot a shitty tiktok video. Fuck all of you and burn in hell.

Nothing since grunge
But these days you can sound new by mixing genres. Like Sleep token or Bloodywood
>>
>>128299436
If you want to be known you have to market yourself. You can't simply post music to the void and expect to get a million fans. Get to work, son.
>>
aphex twin not groundbreaking. shit taste too he just DJs kavari songs now who is a shitty edgelord producer with no idea what shes doing
IMO evian christ has been doing some cool stuff recently with trance and hardcore. also sstepteam are making some cool hip hop. lots of “underground” rap has some creative beats but they are sometimes very sloppy and the rappers dont add much
desu if you want highly stimulating music just listen to onkyo or field recordings or something cause dance music will always be dance music i.e. repetitive and simple. it doesn’t need to be pseuded up

Probably the biggest breath of fresh air I've had this year was emma essex's new album called kidnamefinger for whatever reason. It's not like it's tredding new ground, cough neither did richard cough, but it's a fun exploration into sound that I keep coming back to. its november so honestly may be my personal AOTY
death to lolislop with the same preset trance synth, kidnamedfinger is for cool kid IDM breaks fans
>>
>>128298578
i agree, it's clearly dnb but there's so much effort that goes into the sonic landscape that it just envelops you unlike most dnb where it's more like decorating the d and the b. sometimes it's a bit femreddit but at its best i genuinely feel like i'm merging with the music.
>>
>>128303466
nothing innovative about those guys

anon you’re fighting an impossible battle when zoomers are watching 5M view videos about how richard INVENTED HIS OWN INSTRUMENTS and like vibert? who is that? i’d love to know who the first grifter was who started selling him hard to zoomers
>>
Definitely some stuff in the Epic Collage sphere. Look into that shit, RYM (yeah, fuck you faggot) is a place to start. Weed420 is my personal pick but Elysia Crampton/DJ E/E+E, Giant Claw, Ran Cap Duoi, that new album Darkskin niggas with lightskin problems, that shit is interesting and good. And there’s lots of other scenes that are worth following too. Don’t give up on challenging yourself, listening to lots of music new and old, keeping an open mind, and appreciating new ideas. You don’t want to become one of those guys stuck in a general unable to enjoy new music

electronic music peaked in the late 80s and early 90s, that wubstep shit in the 2010s was corporate slop that re directed electronic music from being a cool counter culture which was vaguely gay into being dude bro shit for guys who would have been listening to korn or some shit if they were born a decade earlier.

But yeah electronic music like all music seems pretty dead in the 2020s

at least in the 2010s we had underground shit like vaporwave and future funk and shit like that

>Repetitive techno style noodling with MLP tier fedora neckbeard melodies but without the beat
>Elecronic inspired ambient

Electronic inspired ambient has been a thing since the late 60s.
Tangerine Dream.
Robert Rich.
Steve Roach.
Psychedelic Rock at times.
Industrial music at times.
Probably many others.
What Aphex Twin did was take away the rhythmic structure and that's all. And now you have an army of plantproteinbased Redditors going WOW SO FUCKING INSANE.
His early IDM work sounds childish compared to Autechre.
His drum and bass sounds childish compared to Squarepusher and Venetian Snares. Even Shpongle has better drum and bass manipulations than Aphex Twin on the first album.
His popularity is due to the combo of current electronic sound with Disney tier melodies that are palatable to Redditor normies. (First, techno, then ambient, and when drum and bass hit UK, it was drum and bass time).
The new stuff, starting with Syro, sounds incredibly dated compared to the musical landscape it was released in.
