>we should put age ratings on explicit music in the same way we do for movies and other things
>AHHH I'M BEING CENSORED I'M LITERALLY SHITTING AND PISSING AND CUMMING
Why was he like this
>>
>>128300211
because famous musicians with radical or semi-radical opinions are ego tops and babies
>>
musicians who go down the comedy path only do so because they are failed serious musicians
>>
>>128300123
Bland post-African repetitions

I kinda like him as a person, at least what he showed publicly. As a musician I find him revolting.
>>
pretentious, unfunny hack
>>
I like him.
>>
>>128300123
he was original in the '60s. It is hard to overstate how much people sought him out then. Every touring band in the world that came to LA in the late-60s went to Laurel Canyon to see him.

Then he went all Guitar Hero and coasted for another 20 years.
>>
>>128300123
I've recently been getting into his music and love it so far.
>>
I got into Zappa from a former carney I met at work and I bought Dweezil’s live covers album on cd whenever that was, ‘07 or ‘09. Inca Roads, Billy The Mountain, Montana
>>
Is there any footage of Zappa playing the piano?
>>
>>128302144
maybe on yt
>>
>>128302149
Already searched and got nothing. Maybe in one of his live albums?

On that dutch documentary from 1970 (A Day With Frank Zappa ) there's some footage of him composing at the piano.
>>
>>128302144
there has to be in the vault. After '88 he rarely touched the guitar and did all his composing on the Synclavier. It would have to be home movies.
>>
I don't know what the average age of the /mu/ poster is, but Frank died 32 years ago. John Lennon died 45 years ago.

Time to get over it.

Hot Rats and Zoot Allures are great. He has a lot of unlistenable stuff. But I have great memories of listening to Camarillo Brillo and drinking endless beers, smoking cigarettes with my hick friends in high school. And my Dad has always been a big Zappa fan. Plus he does have some genuinely great songs. So my feelings about Zappa are positive.

He was doing the comedy stuff from the jump. His first national wide appearance was playing a bicycle on the Tonight Show with Steve Allen. In an awesome piece of conceptual continuity, he would later play a car on the Monkees.
>>
>>128300123
I like Zappa but Devin Townsend ruined a lot of his compositions for me by pointing out that his music sounds like sex without cumming. But Willie the Pimp is a stone groove.
>>
he's a fart sniffing lolbertarian douche but i think he had some good music
>>
>>128300123
He has some good tracks and albums, but also a whole lot of really bad ones.

Tru. Zappa is at his best in Overnite Sensation, Sheik Yerbouti, Joe Garage, than the typ of music he liked doing the most liek Grand Wazoo or Jazz from hell, that shit is boring

Caaptain Beefheart mogged him hard
>>
>>128306418
Jazz From Hell was fun if you're into shit like 90s MIDI music (which I am) so it was alright. Some of it was just junk that sounded more like someone fucking around, but it still had some good parts.
>>
>>128300123
stink foot hehe
>>
>>128306418
>Caaptain Beefheart mogged him hard
their music has nothing in common, they're both great in their own way
>>
>>128300123
an intelligent man who knows how to make complex diarrhoea

Frustrating. He can go from having an incredible ear and talent for composition (his orchestral works, the Mothers material, the 70s jazz fushion albums), to having the most tin ear possible (the dumber jokey songs of the late 70s/throughout the 80s, his sterile 80s production, the boring reggae vamps, the terrible rhythm section re-recordings he did for Cruising With Ruben & the Jets and We're Only In It For The Money). He's lucky he did so much great material, but it's baffling that the same guy did both Village of the Sun and Thing-Fish.
