>two or three great songs
>the rest is either very mediocre at best or an absolute shitty mess
what went so horribly wrong
>>
This is actually a decent pop rock record
>>
Like a lot of their peers they tended to be a "side openers and filler" band.
>>
>>128321485
To be fair you cherrypicked one of their least consistent and most frontloaded albums. S/T, Tyranny & Mutation, Secret Treaties, Agents of Fortune, Spectres and Imaginos are strong throughout.
>>
I think they would have been huge if their name wasn't so retarded
>>
>>128321629
I listened to the entire Spectres, it's mostly filler.
>>
>>128322306
Or if they sang about getting pussy and rocking out instead of sci-fi horror and kaijus.
>>
yeah they were comic book nerds who probably never even had sex nor did any of their fans. we always knew that.
>>
I hate when the music doesn't follow the epic song or album name.
>>
>>128321485
Kinda true, some artists are unfortunately like that.
>>
fire of unknown origin and agents of fortune are packed with awesome songs

Spectres [Columbia, 1977]
Although Sandy Pearlman used to say the Cult's audience couldn't tolerate any suggestion that the band's laser-and-leathers fooforaw was funny, their parodic side has become progressively more overt. What do today's Cultists think of "Godzilla" ("Oh no there goes Tokyo") or the beerhall intro to "Golden Age of Leather"? I bet some of 'em like laughing at laser-and-leathers, and good. I also bet some of 'em are so zonked they wouldn't get it if John Belushi emceed, and to, er, hell with them. B

In the 70s all too often. And you had to pay $7.50 (nearly $40 in today's money) to find out too.
>>
>>128321485
albums 1 and 2 have shitty fuzz production they don't sound good until album 3
>>
>>128323345
>>128322713
Appealed to the nerds who would have bought prog albums but liked a straight-ahead rock sound instead of prog's wankery.
>>
>>128327968
if you don't "get" what the big deal with Zeppelin and Aerosmith were, it had a lot to do with consistent albums full of good songs instead of mostly filler.
>>
>>128327959
"Godzilla" rides off some effective if cliched 70s rock guitar but most of the rest of the album is boring soft rock filler.
>>
every single song on Fire Of Unknown Origin except Don't Turn Your Back is awesome

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1_wTwuHPzU

my fav BOC song ever
>>
>>128322713
like half their songs are about fucking groupies
>>
>>128327959
The next album after Spectres was a really lame pop rock sellout and they tried going back to heavy rock on Cultosaurus Rex but the damage had kind of been done and they were starting to be overtaken by newer bands as the 80s began.
>>
>>128328047
CR was the one that had that song shitting on radical Islam which they generally never did live but it was played a little bit in the early 00s for understandable reasons.
>>
>>128328047
>and they were starting to be overtaken by newer bands as the 80s began
afaik BOC were still popular and selling out arenas until about 1983. I'm old and I had CR and Fire of Unknown Origin when I was a kid, that was the BOC I mainly remember as I was a small child during their early albums.
>>
>>128328047
>and they tried going back to heavy rock on Cultosaurus Rex but
I could do without the New Wave opener, it doesn't "fit" them at all.
>>
late but this one is a gem

Veteran of a thousand psychic wars is probably their best song off that album next to Burning for you
>>
>>128321485
Secret Treaties was great the whole way through.

Secret Treaties is one of my favorite albums. It's probably my overall favorite in that classic rock area.

Astronomy is one of my favourite songs of all time, it's so fucking good
>>
>>128328081
Which song?
>>
>>128321629
Fire of Unknown Origin is definitely their most listenable front to back.
>>
>>128321485
there first three are terrific with a few genuine speed metal numbers.

Tyranny and Mutation is a fucking classic.
>>
>>128332796
the first five imo, although beginning with Agents they're no longer as consistent
>>
>>128330122
Divine Wind
>>
one of those bands where the musicians are so good at many different styles that they become jack of all trades with no clear sound, I like it but they could've been way bigger if they stuck to one thing

Don't Fear the Reaper is such a strange and beautiful hit single it makes everything worth it. I like everything they did to some degree.
>>
>>128332778
It really falls off after Vengeance
>>
>>128328047
I unironically like Mirrors desu
>>
This album is peak, the hell? Joan Crawford, Veteran of the Psychic Wars, and Burnin' For You are all top 5 BOC songs. Fire of Unknown Origin and Sole Survivor are also terrific.
>>
To me, the very essence of "filler" are cover songs. 60s albums are full of them.
>>
>>128338544
what? Joan Crawford is the worst song on the album
>>
>>128327968
>>128328004
That's because most rock musicians are not real songwriters outside a few exceptions.
>>
>>128335163
give Secret Treaties a listen
>>
>>128338544
>Joan Crawford, Veteran of the Psychic Wars, and Burnin' For You are all top 5 BOC songs
lmao none of those are close to top 5
>>
Nowadays, many people only think of the Kingston Trio as far as their singles while in their day, the albums were big sellers and you can often find multiple copies at Goodwill.
>>
>>128338643
they had 19 albums make the Billboard album chart and five made #1. at one point they were almost Capitol's single biggest-selling artists. and then Capitol just dropped them like a hot potato the second the Beatles went on Ed Sullivan.
>>
For those people who only think of Joe South for his classic singles, the albums Introspect and Don't It Make You Want To Go Home are both classic albums front to back. He's had many other great albums as well but start with the Introspect and Don't It Make You Want To Go Home albums.

Definitive singles acts include Patti Page and also Les Paul & Mary Ford overall although in the case of the latter, they did release some song cycles including Time To Dream. Golden Hits is a definitive album for Patti and in the case of Les Paul & Mary Ford, if LP or 78 rpm, go for the Hit Makers and The New Sound collections, otherwise, start with the Best of the Capitol Masters or the Legend and the Legacy box.
>>
>>128338674
Patti Page did three LPs with Pete Rugolo as arranger, she was mainly a singles act and wanted to make real albums similar to June Christy, whom she admired, for cred purposes.
>>
>>128338674
The Beach Boys only made two albums that were intended to be artistic statements."Pet Sounds" and "Smile"
>>
every Motown act was a singles one and the albums were meaningless
>>
>>128338753
i liked it better years ago when BB were terminally uncool and hipsters weren't dickriding Pet Sounds and calling Brian an unsung genius
>>
The Rolling Stones were never really an album band imo.
>>
>>128338813
I think that was more the case for their later albums which have more and more filler as time goes on.
>>
>>128338824
>>128338813
well, that's just, like, your opinion, man

btw my dad and his bff bought their copies of Exile On Main Street on release day May 12, 1972. he's seen them a bunch of times over the years starting with the 72 tour. btw he said he's sometimes impressed at the wide age range you can see at their shows, people from 80 to 10.
>>
>>128338824
I grant you if you ask a lot of Gen Xers who mainly remember the 1978-82 era Stones and weren't alive/old enough for the 60s-early 70s and they mainly associate them with Miss You and Start Me Up and w/e man, even though I never liked Start Me Up.
>>
>>128338887
>>128338861
The few albums they did after that are my favorites of their albums. I also like the earlier Brian Jones influenced things.
>>
>>128338911
fair enough. btw my dad loves almost every era of RS but said of course like all bands the first 10-12 years were the best ones. he mostly likes live Stones recordings 68-73 and there's not many live recordings of them with Brian Jones unlike the abundant Ron Wood recordings.
>>
>>128338824
Aftermath and BTB have a bunch of clunkers on them.

>Stupid Girl
amateurish and misogynistic lyrics, nothing interesting musically
>Going Home
like most 11 minute tracks they don't have enough ideas to fill out all that run time
>Flight 505
the nearly inaudible keyb intro ruins it for me
>Yesterday's Papers
amateurish as fuck lyrics and melody especially for an album opener
>My Obsession
more weak songwriting and uninteresting music, the hand claps don't help
>Cool, Calm & Collected
not bad but clearly a Kinks rip
>Something Happened To Me Yesterday
same
>>
>>128339130
>amateurish and misogynistic lyrics, nothing interesting musically
yeah this song is retarded and juvenile as fuck. tf were they thinking?
>>
lol why did this BOC thread turn into a Rolling Stones discussion?
