Are we in a sax bubble right now? Seems like 15 - 20 years ago, saxophone was about as uncool a musical instrument as you could find. These days it's being shoehorned into everything. Punk band? Sax player. Experimental electronic? Sax samples. Generic millenial post-indie-folk slop? Sax solo. I'm buying puts on saxophone, this shit is wildly overvalued.

Was it? To me it alwasys felt like the most universally appreciated of the brass instruments.

Sax is the 2nd best melodic instrument after electric guitar. Plays in the vocal range and highly expressive.

It uses a reed so it's a woodwind. Brass instruments are ones where you play them by buzzing your lips. Material doesn't matter, e.g. an alphorn is a brass instrument despite being made of wood.

Oh. Genuinely didn't know that. Well, in any case, the sax almost felt like the most universally appreciated wind instruments.

I always liked it but I remember it being seen as a cheesy 80s instrument back in the 00s. Smooth jazz, new wave, that sort of thing.

Doesn't have the range of expression of a saxophone. Irritating squealing timbre in sustained notes that only works in large groups in large concert halls (acoustic chorus + reverb effect). Not so bad played as a fiddle because that's more staccato playing, but saxophone sounds great no matter how you play it.
