What comes after will be one of 2 possibilities: Either horrible "intellectual" musical wank like Vulfpeck and Jacob Collier will reach mainstream dominence or it will be the complete opposite which is a takeover of outsider music, (Stuff like Daniel Johnston, solo Syd Barrett, Sun City Girls, etc)These are the only 2 reactions I can really see happening in response to America's identity crisis. Rock music played to generations of people that had a more confrontational nature. That's just not the attitude of the day anymore. I don't even say that as some condemnation it's just how it goes.Either people are gonna get sick of rolling around in their own filth culturally speaking and start wanting to feel smart and listen to polyrythmic slop or younger people who are horribly uneducated are gonna take their shot at making music and it will be a disaster, but one they can identify with.
