There’s a good argument that it’s Cap N Jazz since they were ultimately the most influential band for all the following waves of emo, but I would argue Algernon is the greatest emo band. They took the Cap N Jazz sound and perfected it with much cleaner and precise instrumentals and twinkly elements, reviving emo back from the hell hole of 3rd wave. This is basically the band for emo purists. 3rd wave emo bands like MCR and Jimmy Eat World are basically alternative rock with whiny vocals, and I’m speaking as someone who likes these bands as well.
