When I was 13 or 14 I really got into this album but what kind of music even is this? It's not really metal, it's not really punk, and it's not really new wave, and I still have no idea now that I have rediscovered it. Thoughts on the album or the band?

I'd honestly say the Wait is metal. Metallica ripped that track off for their sound and have covered it as well.

John Peel called them Quasi Metal.

Aggressive Post Punk.

just sounds like post punk to me

Also the band was greatly influenced by dub. Martin "Youth" Glover was one of the first people that bought that style of music to the UK.

Post-punk that ended up semi-pioneering industrial metal with its sound. It's definitely heavy for the genre but to say it couldn't happen next to bands like Wire or Public Image Ltd. is perhaps a bit much.

Worst thing about music is people trying to put everything into boxes. Categorizing everything.

Boo-hoo, it makes shit easier to find and comprehend. It's not a quality exclusive to music, it's how the human mind fundamentally works.

why do you need some sort of descriptor to enjoy music? killing jokes music would be early goth similar to siouxsie or bauhaus or play dead

I can see the goth comparison from the Revelations - Night Time era, but I wouldn't call stuff like this early goth, this is definitely more industrial:

The trick is to use a semi-hollow guitar and ADT/slapback echo. He used amps with a very specific tone too. I can't remember the name of them now.
