Was Elton John really that popular?
yes, that goddamn popular.also, kinda crazy that MJ is creeping up that close to the Beatles in certified units ngl
>>128488274I know Queen had a lot of hits but none of their albums were truly spectacular in totality, those sales figures were wild
>>128488274>Elton Johnisn't that the crocodile rock guy? hate that song *looks it up* yeah he is I hate that song I turn off the radio when it comes on
>>128488274Yes, he makes good music.
>>128488274>rihanna
>>128488274>certificationsmeaningless>label claimsmostly bullshitBeatles are miles above the rest, Taylor Swift, Sinatra and Eminem in place of Elton John, Zeppelin and Rihanna (lol)
>>128488274Elton John has the best selling single of all time, but it was that Lady Diana tribute song released shortly after her death. IIRC all the proceeds went to Lady Di's backed charities, and that alone inflated the numbers.apart from that, he had a long streak of classic albums back in the 70s, plus the very popular Lion King soundtrack.
>>128488355I'm way more surprised that Elvis can still place number 3 on that list even almost half a century after his death honestly. Nothing against him, but on some level I've always gotten the impression that his image was bigger than his music, like Marilyn Monroe with her movies. Maybe it's because I'm not an American so his impact escapes me.
>>128488274How the fuck did Rihanna get there before even Eminem?

>>128490885fuck, that made me tear up. especially knowing how it all ends.
>>128490885He did good Some say drug addicted, others say humble
>>128488274trust fund band
>>128488412their greatest hits compilation is the best selling album ever in the UK and probably sold tons in the US as well so it inflates the numbers.
>>128491134Hit these nuts bro
>>128489110>Maybe it's because I'm not an American so his impact escapes me.I'm an American and I don't get it either. He had zero cultural impact or relevance to anyone under the age of 50, one of those artists that is very firmly attached to certain generations and completely irrelevant for anyone outside them. There are plenty of young Beatles or Michael Jackson fans but I (in my early 40s) have never in my entire life met even one single Elvis fan who wasn't at least 20 years older than me.

>>128490998He died two months after that performance. The transition between barely knowing where he is and then being "on" is nothing short of incredible.>>128490998

Yes. Dude is still super popular with all generations too. Saw him live a few years back and there was quite the variety in age of people there. Only show I seen that had a bigger variety was Dead & Company.
