What went so wrong? They were fantastic
>>
War and Joshua Tree have some great songs, but also some songs so bad that I want to immediately stop listening.
>>
>>128645899
like with many bands - money, ego, fame
>>
Got too popular. It's a tale as old as time. They had a good run into 90s though.
>>
>>128645899
Bono disappeared up his own asshole and thought he could change the world by preaching to the crowd
>>
>>128645899
Bono was jealous of Ian Curtis and a was cunt to him
>>

the Edges simplistic guitar style was exposed after 5 albums and he was out of ideas. so they got into disco, techno and all other kinds of faggotry

The Unforgetabble Fire IS an objective great album.
>>
If they kept going doing the electronic path of Achtung Baby and Pop they almost certainly would be considered the second most innovative mainstream band of all time behind the Beatles.
Negative reviews of Pop must have made them nervous so they decided to always play it safe and they completely lost their risk taking spirit.
>>
>>128645899
Meh lots of rock bands started great and went downhill. It has more to do with the genre itself
>>
>>128646404
zooropa was legit pretty weird for mainstream rock

i can understand why u2 pisses people off so much - imagine going from numb to...veritgo and beautiful day

unironically more influential to post-punk revival than joy division
>>
I think the problem is their coolest stuff was not their most influential or most popular stuff. Their first thee albums are great, but they're just post-punk albums. The stuff they did from the late 80s onward was massively influential in music and culture, and they were one of the biggest bands in the world in the late 80s. In the late 80s every alternative band wanted to sound like them - Minor Threat even broke up because everybody in Minor Threat wanted to sound like U2 except Ian, who knew he couldn't sing like Bono.

This isn't unheard of either. IMO Green Day were a great band in the 90s, but their most iconic album is American Idiot, which IMO is when they started sucking. But that whiny, overproduced sound made them even more accessible to the mainstream. Metallica's actually another great example - when they stopped being a thrash band they both started to suck and became the biggest metal band in history.
>>
>>128646472
>Minor Threat even broke up because everybody in Minor Threat wanted to sound like U2 except Ian, who knew he couldn't sing like Bono
no one now remembers it, but there was absolutely a widespread trend in the late 80s of hardcore bands trying to sound like u2.
>>
>>128646472
>>128646498
the chameleons took their style from early U2 and made three post-punk classics
>>
I like how it's slowly becoming acceptable to admit that U2 is a good band. This would have been unthinkable on here a few years ago.

Anyway, critics were retarded for not liking Pop. The production is a little wonky but the songs are great. Especially when they performed them live on the tour. Songs like Gone and Miami completely came alive.
I think Miami especially is easily the most underrated U2 song. It's unironically too cool for normies. The beat was like 20 years ahead of its time.

"This man with the weight of the whole universe in his voice, this crooner from some black hole - the dark lord - stepped forward and I was like, Oh my god, I’m going to meet Ian Curtis," Bono recalled. "I put my hand out and he went, ‘Alright?’ And I couldn’t believe the sound he made.It was just this sweet, sweet sound. He was this beautiful soul but he sang from this other place…. It was a very special moment."

pretentious way to put it, but bono seemed to really like him
>>
>>128645899
Basically what went wrong is they had to reinvent themselves three times.

First, they started as an angry and passionate mix of Joy Division and Stiff Little Fingers with their "Poet" era - writing about their own experiences and their woes (which is why War is often considered their best album, seeing how they were affected by the Troubles). Problem is their ambition, growing love of Americana and a more artistic push by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno eventually lead to an egotistical peak with Rattle and Hum.

The second reinvention came with their "Ironic" era beginning with Achtung Baby - Incorporating electronic influences, satirical songwriting and a far more "alternative" approach that worked wonders intially, before getting so caught up in the irony and leading to Pop and its disastrously expensive tour.

Finally we have the last reinvention - The "Humble" era, in which they reinvented themselves yet again with All You Can't Leave Behind's more tasteful and palatable mix of their previous styles together without going too far. That way they can still create lavish yet unpretentious (and often kinda boring) works of art and tours that have kept them alive for years and years where other bands haven't.

The best New Order song is Ceremony and that’s an Ian song all the way through. If he had put off roping for two more weeks you would have a fantastic Joy Division studio version.

They were good from to War to Zooropa they just fell off like all bands/artists eventually do.

Can attest that the ZOOTV Outside Broadcast concert was the best concert I ever attended.

I was at a live performance the week after Bill Clinton was elected president and when Bono called the White House.he told the receptionist they could tell George Bush he wouldn't be calling him anymore. ( ZOOTV had a segment where in the second part of the concert he would use a phone that was connected to the main speakers and call someone famous. (usually a world leader)

Long ago, in the crispy skies above Mount Gravy, Bono, the sunglasses-clad God of KFC, ruled with a greasy fist over the Golden Bucket of Eternal Chicken. This bucket was no mere vessel—it was said to contain the original 11 herbs and secrets of the universe, passed down by the Colonel himself in a flaming drumstick dream.

But trouble brewed in the indie heavens.

Radiohead, the glitchy titans of emotional dissonance, had grown hungry. Led by the cryptic warlock Thom Yorke, they cast lo-fi spells to steal tenders from Bono’s sacred supply, whispering lyrics like curses: "Everything in its right place… even your chicken."
>>
I remember how I listened to it first. Thought it had to be bad because of 'U2'. I thought Bloody Sunday was a 10/10 and expected the album to only have that one good song but it never got worse as I kept listening.

Coldplay wasn't far behind. Chris Martin, wielding his piano like a battering ram, led a band of pastel crusaders to batter the Bucket—literally—with the beat of "Viva La Fried-a." They believed fried chicken was too mainstream for the gods and deserved to be reimagined as kale.

Furious, Bono descended from his Zinger chariot and called forth the mighty Waffle Wars of the Side Dishes, summoning coleslaw cyclones and biscuit meteors. The arena? The Flaming Drive-Thru of Olympus, guarded by statues of The Colonel weeping gravy tears.

But just as Bono struck Coldplay down with the power of a Double Down, a voice echoed through the steam.

Jim Morrison emerged from the mist of deep fryer oil, wearing a flame-broiled crown.

"You never saw the signs," he said, licking a suspiciously char-grilled Whopper. "I’ve always been with Burger King."

Bono's sunglasses cracked.

"But Jim," he gasped, "you sang about breaking on through..."

"Yeah," Jim smirked. "Breaking through to the flame-broiled side."

Suddenly, a black van labeled J.S.C. screeched across the clouds—Jewish Section of the CIA. Out stepped agents with gefilte grenades and espionage onions. Jim handed them a thumb drive shaped like a pickle.

"The Bucket is compromised," he whispered.

Boy [Island, 1980]
Their youth, their serious air, and their guitar sound are setting a small world on fire, and I fear the worst. No matter where they're starting off--not as big as Zep, maybe, but not exactly on the grunge circuit either--their echoey vocals already teeter on the edge (in-joke) of grandiosity, so how are they going to sound by the time they reach the Garden? What kind of Christian idealists lift their best riff from PIL (or from anywhere at all)? As bubble-headed as the teen-telos lyrics at best. As dumb as Uriah Heep at worst. C+

I'm a huge U2 fan, and The Unforgettable Fire is my least favorite of their canon classic albums.
It's basically like the Oscar bait of music.
Songs about racism? Check.
Songs about America? Check.
Songs about war? Check.

Elvis Presley and America is like if you told AI to make the most boomer tier song for the Rolling Stone magazine generation.

This would be forgivable but the songs don't back it up. Bad is the only good song and even that is completely shit on by the Wide Awake in America live version.
The Joshua Tree improved on UF in every conceivable way and is considered the better album for a reason.

This, that album is pretty underrated. Had they took out the radio appeasing pop rockers and replaced them with the more ambient/electronic tunes they left out (which made Brian Eno mad to the point he'll never colab with them again) it could have been one of their best records.
