>Come on man, KISS has darker songs than Van Halen in the 70s.
That's not really what I'm arguing, though. KISS does have darker songs (and honestly I can't name a single "dark" VH song from the '70s), yes, but Van Halen is consistently more metallic.
>Their heaviest from the 70s, like Runnin' With The Devil or Beautiful Girl are clearly not as dark as KISS's songs
Not really good examples imo. I'd call Light up the Sky's main riff heavier than ANY '70s Kiss song and even a good chunk of most metal from that time. It's an intense song for 1979. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzo3Sf7MpZw
>>
>>128662283
Yeah, fair play, hey, there's a reason everyone followed Eddie where he went by the time the 80s came. Light Up The Sky (listening to it now) sounds like something that bands of the 80s played.
So you are correct.

Have you ever listened to their demos before they were signed? They have two songs which are bangers, Believe Me and Big Trouble

I checked out that Kiss song (Under the Gun), and it's got actual shredding in the song (like at the start and in parts of the guitar solo):
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy8AmZiae0U

I didn't expect that from a KISS song. Maybe it's because it had a different lead guitarist.

Looking into MMA right now, it's definitely more streamlined than Metallum but it seems to lack many of the deep cuts that website has and there doesn't appear to be a "related artists" tab. However it does have a new releases page.

I've listened to Animalize a few times and I can pretty confidently tell you the only metal songs on that one are this and Under the Gun. Burn Bitch Burn has a bit of the sound but the rest of the record is cookie-cutter glam/hard rock and is much softer than the previous two albums. If you want metal KISS, you should listen to those.

Yesterday I realized that Whitesnake and Van Halen released their first 6 albums the same years. And since I can listen to music all nights during work I decided to listen to each of them year for year. I'm gonna start on 1981 tonight. So far, I've liked Whitesnake more.

prog archives has a banner at the top of it's site that says it was founded in 2002, so it seems like it was about an 8 year gap. There's also a jazz site in their webring ( https://www.jazzmusicarchives.com/ ), but idk the amount of overlap that genre has with older metal.

He makes pretty good content but his voiceover can get very stilted. His RATT retrospective comes to mind for me, there are multiple parts where there's an obvious pause between his lines that just doesn't sound natural. And his occasional quips/attempts at jokes almost always bomb because of that.

Yeah. Personally I think Fire Down Under is one of the top releases from 80-81, every song is a bullseye. Even No Lies, the weakest off the record is still a very good song. Well into his 70s? I doubt it, since that would mean he was in his 30s already in the early 80s.

But he is not totally wrong, Raven and Venom already had label backup and were more established acts, although Metallica were coming up fast and were already hot in the circles of metalheads, plus it was a usa tour where people would know them and appreciate them equally.

The album got poor/mixed reviews, but this kinda title song is cool. I haven't really listened to the rest tho.

On the subhuman race album (and on this song) skid row is pretty close to groove metal though.
>>
Skid row's "Subhuman race" album is kinda an acquired taste. Maybe you could
compare it to angry machines by Dio, which also takes getting used to.

Ok, idk if acquired taste means something is good or you just brainwashed yourself into being able to listen to it....
>>
>>128689876
I never cared for it personally. Grunge-y groove metal just isn’t what I want out of Skid Row and the songs weren’t that good, either.
>>
anyways this is much different than their first album. No glam left here:
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl9Vs43ca54

I think the "subhuman race" of the titular song is probably being a wagie. It's like the phrase rat race. Basically a similar theme to the titular Slave to the grind from their 2nd album.

>Jesus, he knows the story, he knows the position that I'm in
>A hooker knows the feelin' to get fucked the way I've been

>Turn my insides out, your mouth drank my water

>you you look at me like I'm subhuman
>you you talk to me like I'm subhuman
>you you're treatin' me like I'm subhuman,
>you are jumpin' into the subhuman race

>>
>>128689883
>I never cared for it personally. Grunge-y groove metal just isn’t what I want out of Skid Row and the songs weren’t that good, either.
You mightnot like Angry Machines either, since a decent chunk of it is Dio doing groove/doom metal.
>>
>>128689883
did you prefer the first or second skid row album? I thought some songs like firesign were pretty good.
>>

Sounded tight. As with many other bands, I think that the constant line-up changes when they were in the beginning of their careers hurt them, so they never became more than a cult band.
>>128689961

Not hard, but I need more albums from 70-74 in order to expand it. A lot of these I was going to put on that chart but didn't have enough room:

Alkana - Welcome to My Paradise
Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation
Bow Wow - Signal Fire
Deep Purple - Burn
Gillan - Mr. Universe

Legend - From the Fjords
Montrose - Montrose?
Motorhead - Bomber
Riot - Narita
Saxon - Saxon
Scorpions - Virgin Killer
Scorpions - Lovedrive
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Thin Lizzy - Black Rose: A Rock Legend (never listened to this one but it's considered their best release by pretty much everyone)
UFO - No Heavy Petting
UFO - Lights Out?

RATT really should've went in a heavier, faster direction then what they ended up pursuing. They were REALLY good at making quick, electrifying metal the few times they did it

Amon Duul II - Wolf City
Ash Ra Tempel - Schwingungen
Beck Bogert & Appice s/t
Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation
Hawkwind - A Space Ritual
Mott the Hoople - Brain Capers
Phoenix - Mugur de fluier

Population II was already in there right?
Props for including Bang. Great great band.

I haven't listened to the debut in a while but it was really cool. Like a 50/50 blend of Zeppelin and Sabbath, vocalist reminded me a lot of Rob Plant

I listened to Kiss - Unmasked and Dynasty tonight and came to the conclusion that there's no way Paul Stanley isn't a closeted homosexual.

As great as Marcolin is, I slightly prefer the vocals on EDM. I really like Johan's timbre, it really sounds "metallic" and he was super good at wailing. The wailing before and after the solo in this song gives me chills. The sheer anguish conveyed here is awesome.

Never realized that lol. I thought it was the filter that just goofed up his voice.

Also, that's a really cool intro. I love the use of synths on this album. That bridge in "under the oak" and the outro of "a sorcerer's pledge" are really cool too (even if the latter's female choral vocals kinda reach cheesy overkill territory)

Stray - Suicide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7T4iIJqCQ3g

Early heavy metal with some really scuzzy guitarwork and a raucous break in the middle with some fast riffing for 1971.

These are really fun to make. Took a crack at making this one themed after Awaken the Guardian, and I think it came out pretty fucking good. As for the two additions, I put up The Mentors (because it's unique and unlike everything else here, nice variety) and the Turbo album.
>>
>>128747659

>>
>>128749826
Killer (Belgium, pretty sure they were late '70s)
Krokus for a brief period
Heavy Load but you've probably listened to them
Picture (Netherlands, early speed metal)
Thor

And that's about all I can think of. Most of the bands I've listened to started early on in the '80s.

All I have left to do now is update 1984 and 1985's charts. Don't think I'll be doing that tonight, though.

While much of this album isn't all that memorable, it's still worth listening to from a historical standpoint as this is one of the first records that actually has more than one speed metal song. Their followup release pushes the speed threshold even more, though.

I'm not familiar with their entire catalog but Faithful Breath started off as a prog rock band in the 70s but changed their name to Risk and did speed metal and thrash metal in the 80s, they had the same singer the entire time.

Might be a bit specific but does anyone have metal that uses the hammond organ? Only band that comes to my mind is Deep Purple. I think it sounds cool.
