>>128702556That’s kinda rad dude, I dig it. If you asked directly what adjustments i would make? I would like it better if it was sped up by about 50-10 bpms. add some ripping bass and drums and you’ve got a nice little piece there. And finally, what vocals you choose to go with will give the definitive character to the song, so make that choice wisely. Again, if it were up to me, I would try and recruit an amateur female vocalist who’s got a raw, maybe raspy, definitet rugged mid rangey kinda voice. That’s my vision for it. Maybe end on a modulation?Anyway, here’s a little song I wrote, just now. Just for posterity. Thoughts? Does it have potential maybe?https://vocaroo.com/1spC5WEKrlmo
>>128702683Thanks man! Yeah my rhythm’s a bit sloppy and inconsistent lol it sounds good at times but drags an at others. I’m a bit out of practice, but felt inspired lately and was really feeling this and wanted to get some opinions from some strangers. I dig your song too! I like the lyrics and the chord progression a lot. Really the only advice I have is to keep practicing and recording yourself and it’s only natural that you’ll get better.
>>128702683I think there’s definitely potential in it though. More than anything I’d work on making your vocals cut through a bit more, if you know what I mean

>>128703667Nice mix, sounds good.
>>128705180hey its the theater _____, cool stuff.
>>128705180Thank you! Yeah if I were to make a real recording of this I’d make the intro/verse cleaner so it’d be less muddy. I like your stuff too. If I were to make any sort of suggestion it would be to have stronger hooks?
I'm nearing completion of my first EP. It's all stuff that's 3-4 years old at this point, some of the earliest stuff I ever wrote. They're kind of like naked baby pictures at this point, but it's better late than never.https://voca.ro/1kRt6K1dijbiThis one is the oldest, around october 2021https://voca.ro/1BVOvX4lJq5aThis one I like a lot, but I think maybe most of it drags in a way it doesn't when I play it acoustically. Any ideas for something subtle I can add to give it some movement? I want it to still have the feel of an acoustic song>>128702556>https://voca.ro/1dCioG38GJltI like this. Guitar tone sounds a little dull, but that also could be the mic placement or something. Cool.>>128702683This song is dogshit and you're going nowhere. Made this in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. I don't think it's working, will probably scrap it but a bump is a bump I guess. Stays on the one harmony so long any change sounds weird. Need to either have a harmonic rhythm established earlier or not have one at all.>>128702556It's fine, musically. Maybe a bit too much distortion. It does sound like it's waiting for the rest of a band though. >>128703667Got a cool sense of space.

>>128711428Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely going to add bass, vocals, and drums this weekend and I know what i want to do. I was just excited that i wrote a song for the first time in awhile and wanted to see what people thought of what I had so far.
>>128707479You can say “faggot” on the internet, it’s okay.>>128707848Yeah, none of these are very hook-y songs tbf.>>128708114>1kRt6K1dijbi, “I’m the Asshole” or whateverThe underlying song idea here is really good. The love some of weird little chords in the mix.If you wanted advice:Nix the vocal harmonies. One tuneless voice works with the vibe you’re going for. Four of them makes it sound worse, not better.Something about the rhythm guitar sound here doesn’t quite click: maybe the tone is too trebly/twangy.The solo is very good obviously but it’s a bit too forward in the mix, given the lax sound of the rest of it. This sound paradoxical but I think I’d be more impactful if it was dialed back a little.>1BVOvX4lJq5aThe good news is that that you’re right to like it, I think: the song is good. The guitar playing and the overall sound and evening the mixing in the final section absolutely kicks ass. The bad news is that you’re also absolutely right: as it stands, it absolutely drags. We have to sit through a pretty repetitive 4 and a half minute song before we get any of that dynamism at all. I see what you’re trying to do with the slower section bursting into the later thing, but the first part is just way too static and repetitive to get the payoff from the last part.Despite how nicely written the instrumental parts in the main sections are, they don’t have much impact because a) they’re all the same energy and sound as the guitar parts on the verse, and b) we hear them quite a few times. If you really want to keep the structure, you might want to rethink how the guitar sounds are used, or in general make the sound contrast with the verses. (eg. you mentioned liking how it sounds with acoustic guitar - why not just… use acoustic guitar for some of it?)Also, vocals might a bit too low energy here for me imo, because fuck there’s a really good song here and I want you to sell it to me.
>>128711428>>128711441>ambient nu-age-y thingno, a harmonic shift here works I think. just approach it as sections a, b, c, etc each playing with different chords, and think of them more like key changes than a progression.>>128702683> Does it have potential maybe?dig the half-assed buzzy acoustic guitar strumming but unfortunately the song is atrociously written and couldn’t be so much as a minor underground hit no matter how many pedals you decide to slap over it
>>128713765>just approach it as sections a, b, c, etc each playing with different chords, and think of them more like key changes than a progression.Yeah my initial plan was to basically drag out 1 more or less traditional harmonic progression over several minutes in sections of fluctuating rhythmic complexity. Which I think is exactly what you suggested.Still trying to decide if it should also turn in to a drum and bass track.

>>128702556ok so i’ve been writing this record for like 10 yearsall the scratch tracks are done, we’re going in to do final drums next week, at which point we’ll start building final bass, final guitars etchere’s some selected songs:https://vocaroo.com/13yRbbevTMUXhttps://vocaroo.com/15KsYucdq08Lhttps://vocaroo.com/15Fvtbsc2L1h https://vocaroo.com/1nwm7rdykDzV https://vocaroo.com/129G6Q8Ex4tF https://vocaroo.com/1mYFHa1usxPshttps://vocaroo.com/1mnzBbhxcHST so obviously like there’s this rustic thing going on for a lot of tracks… so like… idk, do you guys envision that as the ideal sound for this record?like a kind of roomy, intimate, bright eyes ‘i’m wide awake it’s morning’-but-with-modern-mixing kinda thing? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ETCo4sl_90 cos if so i can totally get an SM7B to do some intimate vocals, and record upright bass instead of electric bass for most songs, put a tea towel on the snare and toms, etc etc etcunless you guys are thinking like, maybe it should sound a bit more like the most recent wednesday album? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAoz3ykn2t4 like idk, more poppy, less room, etc etci guess both of those things sound mostly the same once you mix both of them moderni guess it’s more just a question of, idk do you see this as a rustic folky album with like mandolins and mostly acoustic guitar-driven, or do you see this as a folk-rock record like wednesday/wilcoidk.any direction would be appreciated, obviously we’ve been writing this for a long time (music's changed a lot since we began) and now that the final drum sessions are finally booked in i’m getting a bit nervous

>>128722038just got 20 seconds into the first track and holy shit you weren’t joking about going for a bright eyes sound. be prepared for very direct comparisons if you get reviewed, because your voice sounds identical. Took until my 30s to get diagnosed with adhd, was kind of a surprise but looking at the like 10 ongoing music projects in completely different genres I've got like 20% finished each I guess it shouldn't have come as a surprise. Anyway here's something from a thing that won't get finished, featuring a slightly too loud ocarina.https://voca.ro/1kO7lnSju1P3
>>128713653Thanks for all the feedback. A lot of it is stuff that I already knew I had to do, but it can be good to hear it from someone else, as opposed to friends who say it sounds fine. For the second song, I think I might track acoustics for the whole thing and have the electric cleans come in after the first chorus. Then I'll slowly add small, subtle overdubs so that things are always changing, but not so much as to detract from the rockout at the end. I want to redo the last chorus at some point, I think it should be done louder and up an octave, but in general I thought my pass at the vocal was one of my better takes.

I tried to make an entire track in a single synth ages ago, think I give up. I just can't make this free emulation of a Roland Juno 6 produce good drum sounds. That's not even something I can manage on a modern synth. It's just been sitting on my hard drive for ages but I don't think its happening.https://voca.ro/1lzYNljrJ9nQI'm not imagining it right? This would be listenable if I just swapped the drum sounds for literally any others.
>>128722038>>128724048>>128723581you are 2 kind and also i will not shill the name here for the sake of honouring all that vocaroo general does that it is good and holy but ty ty i've mulled over your words all day>>128727523you WILL write in some high hat articulation (whether it's foot closing or otherwise) in the intro sectionyou WILL compose whisper distorted deftone vocals for thisyou WILL add dynamics by having a quiet or staccato section---****ALRIGHT EVERYONE HERE I NEED YOUR HELP****drummer for these two fairly large artists enjoy our work and are happy to track drums for us instead of our current choice:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR9w_CfrH1chttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAoPryBArwcmy thoughts on drummer 1 vs drummer 2:- drummer 1 is my literal hero, and it would bring me great joy to listen to this record when it's done and always go "wow, i'm just like w1lc0", or feel like m0dest m0use when j0hnny m4rr joined them. my concern is the problem that this fella brought up >>128724048 which is that we sound a bit too much like 2000s bright eyes, and tracking with a 2000s drummer (with his touch and tone) would compound that problem and probably hinder the success of this record on streaming- drummer 2 i am also a big fan of, and he's obviously played on many big hits with tea towels on his snare, so he knows how to get the tone without any guesswork. SO GUYS, ARE WE HAPPY TO HIRE DRUMMER 2? we'd probably end up sounding a bit bedroom 2020s indie pop like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3IrW-Hbb4w&t=89s^ that's also himidk i think it would make us sound a bit more original, a bit more modern, a bit more subdued in a way that's accessible to normies -- would still sound like bright eyes in performance, just wouldn't have that 2000s trebly, higher energy kinda soundwould ideally sound like the sequel to bright eyes rather than the ripoff
>>128730030Honestly the main thing I was underscoring with the Bright Eyes comparison is literally that your singing voice sounds very very similar to Conor Oberst - and well, there’s presumably not a whole lot you can/should do about that right now.I don’t think the choice of drummer should be guided by the comparison worry; do what you actually feel is best to bring what you want out of the songs.
yoi cut my foot, ill write lyrics about it
>>128732269As I’ve said to many lovers: make it short but good.

My latest sloppy noodling drafts. I would appreciate your opinion on structuring. This version goes from bedroom elevator muzak intro/verse to a bluesy riff at 1:44 after the chorus, however it feels more disjointedhttps://voca.ro/1mZSa73Cd5sKThis one has a bluesy thing integrated as a part of verse before a chorus, which I feel as a better introduction of the riff, however it makes overall structure too repetitivehttps://voca.ro/1lbpj29ea9NF

>>128768289Thanks! Pavement is not what I'd expect... I think the original idea was if Behind The Lines by Genesis was on Weezer's Blue Album. The song was never finished until we went in to record, so I quickly figured out that bridge section, which by my estimation is shameless Dinosaur Jr plagiarism. It feels to me a little bit like a song that was never strangled into it's proper form, but it's so old that I don't care. Never came up with a proper title, so it's just called Yellow cause that's the color it sounds like to me.

Another tune for the prospective EP. I remember listening to that dog. and trying to write a song like Long Island. I think this needs a few touch ups in some places, I don't really like the way the last note of the guitar solo dies. The different guitar takes also get so slightly out of sync at the start in a way that drives me nutty. Maybe I'm losing perspective, who knows.

https://voca.ro/1khaDOisnCX5What is this song? It's a female singer, guitar backing track I think, kind of like beabadoobee
Spent an afternoon channeling my inner Trent Reznor.Heavily auto-tuned vocals because I'm not gud at the in-tune sings.> -16 lufs. Maybe drop the volume a bithttps://voca.ro/1hxMW1hoTZGG
>>128777334Yeah, very very much has that late NIN vibes. I like the little details like that rattly texture in the beat. Not that keen on the strings sound, though that might just be me; maybe experiment with some other sounds, different synths/patches etc? Vocal delivery could maybe be better (not in the sense of like, singing ability or whatever - moreso just there’s a kind of affectation to it that doesn’t quite fit imo).Really good start.

>>128780052No, it's more like new soul by yael naim or that coffee song by beabadoobee. It most likely has millions of views on youtube. The song is not very samba at all, the backing track guitar is just bedroom pop stuff, but the vocal melody maybe has a bit of a samba rhythm, maybe
>>128702556Please someone help me find this song. The robots have failed me and BRAIN-FM can only satisfy me for so long. Some kind of folksy or sea shanty song. Old. Attached is the tune in my head in da's: https://voca.ro/18ecbJOV0xjc
>>128776882Pleasant mumbling from you and your guitar, but mumbling can only be so good. One of you needs to straighten out.>>128777334Not a fan of the bass sound, personally.
>>128782562>needs to straighten out.aight aight will work on it, ty.

>>128776882there’s something about this that’s really compelling. the musical ideas on the guitar and in the vocals are beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is there. I can see this becoming really really special (and I’m not just gassing you up - develop your sound a bit, and I could easily imagine your work being the kind of off-kilter folk I absolutely love to listen to).*but* I also largely agree with the other anon. the complete lack of articulation in the vocals, to the point that to the listener it just wordless groaning, is jarring, especially when the guitar is also a little messy (even if it’s very well-composed).Thom Yorke gets away with singing like that because he’s got Radiohead behind him and nobody actually wants to hear what he has to say anyway. Quirky indie Lo-fi folk people get away with playing the guitar like that usually because they articulate their lyrics clearly enough that the whole thing comes together anyway.you don’t need to change anything drastic or start enunciating like a theatre kid like >>128705180 but even just a smidge more control over the sound would tip this from a great idea to a little masterpiece.

>>128788260Is this a generic AI generated pop song about God?Don’t like it man. That shit’s Satanic, sorry.
Came up with this blues-ish acoustic guitar riff that goes into some weird modal stuff. Is it worth developing/working into a song?Mostly wondering because I find singing while playing this kind of riff really hard so I want to know if the riff is actually interesting enough to be worth trying.https://voca.ro/1jTblGffbc5w
