Meaning your parents, a university giving you scholarships/grants, or the government itself giving you public housing. The big cities, which used to have vibrant music and other art scenes, were crime-ridden hellholes from the 70s to 90s, so it was easy for artists who had no family money to afford rent in them or just squat. Now, everything's safe and Disneyfied, big cities aren't building much housing, and hordes of rich foreigners are buying up all the property and poor foreigners are taking up all the cheaper space, so rent is through the roof anywhere worth living.
