>Wilson's career was cut short during a performance at Dick Clark's Old Time Rock and Roll Revue in Atlantic City on September 19, 1975. The R&B singer, who had numerous hits over the '50s and '60s, suffered a major stroke and collapsed onstage; audience members initially cheered, thinking it was part of the performance. Wilson was in the habit of drinking a large quantity of water before concerts and swallowing sodium capsules to make himself sweat profusely onstage. "The chicks love it," he reportedly told his friend Elvis Presley. Wilson was left an invalid by the stroke, unable to speak coherently or care for himself, and he remained in nursing care until his death nine years later at the age of 49.[3]
