This thread is dedicated to the discussion of traditional heavy metal and its many sub-genres. Hard rock that is both historically and musically adjacent to traditional metal is also welcomed. Lastly, if this is your first time posting here please view the link below:

If you have to ask this, it probably isn’t and you should take what you want to talk about somewhere else.

It's on the list. Never listened to that one, does it have the garbage production Orgasmatron has?
>>
>>128757007
IIRC power ballads are basically songs that are meant to evoke an extra strong emotional response from the listener. Could be wrong, though
>>
what decade was worse for metal: 90s or 00s?
>>
>>128757352
90s
>>
>>128757352
Definitely the 90s.
>>
>>128757445
It's no contest, really. I mean Christ, an entire fucking sub-genre (thrash) was pretty much dead in the water for most of the decade.
>>
>>128757482
depends what you mean by "worse". metal in the 90s was dead while in the 00s it was bastardized and turned to shit (numetal, metalcore, etc). better dead than humiliated
>>
>>128757515
True, but on the flip-side there were genre revivals going on in the 00s so the concept of metal's was only fucked up in the eyes of the mainstream.
>numetal, metalcore, etc).
Nu metal started out in the '90s, and I'm pretty sure metalcore started around the same time, too.
>>
>>128757572
I'd put the death of metal as well as rock overall on 1996, with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. at least on the mainstream

seriously. it's absurd how quickly the entire music industry turned to shit overnight.
>>
>>128757594
>I'd put the death of metal as well as rock overall on 1996, with the Telecommunications Act of 1996. at least on the mainstream
>Telecommunications Act of 1996
QRD? Because from what I'm reading this just looks like a poorly executed bunch of regulations.
>>
>>128757660
long story short one of the things it did was allow big companies to purchase smaller companies and to homogenize the industry. before that the industry was much more decentralized and local which led to more creativity and variety.

right after the act, shit like buttrock, numetal, boy bands, girlpop, rap and other crap started getting popular. surely just a coincidence

it also had effects outside of music which I won't get into
>>
>>128757781
>long story short one of the things it did was allow big companies to purchase smaller companies and to homogenize the industry.
So that's why you don't see indie labels often; if at all anymore? Damn.
>right after the act, shit like buttrock, numetal, boy bands, girlpop, rap and other crap started getting popular. surely just a coincidence
For me it's nu metal and butt rock. When I was first getting into metal and learning about the history of it, I looked at some yearly releases, and I've always found it odd that there were a handful of albums in 1994-1995, y'know pretty standard stuff for a genre starting out: but then 1996-1997 comes around and there's a fuckload of bands popping up. And it didn't appear natural like heavy metal did with the NWOBHM, which was an entirely grassroots movement; no, what I saw reeked of astroturfing, like grunge but on a bigger scale.
>>
>>128757152
Never seen Talas mentioned on here before...decent 80s cheese

>>
>>128757786
Yeah the top row of every chart is my personal favorites of the year.
>Maybe not to someone totally new to metal though.
That's why I put it back. It's a VERY well known record but not quite on the level of Reign in Blood and Master of Puppets; those have at this point entered mainstream pop culture. (That, and Ride the Lightning I'd 100% call an essential release for 1984.)

>>128757800
It isn't any less metal because Twisted Sister's a metal band. I don't even consider them glam either, their music's just too fucking heavy and dirty to qualify as it.

imo they would've been the perfect setup for an epic, but instead that song is just pretty much straightforward trad. still great music, but not up to par with shit like trial by fire, break free and alone in the docks. the entire rest of the album is in an entirely different wheelhouse lol

The Whitesnake '87 album, I'd argue there's enough material there that counts as trad metal. Everyone is sick of the singles, sure, but it's an immense album from a vocal and guitar perspective.

Here, the essence of metal
>>
>>128762617
Find something that makes your band unique, otherwise you’ll just be another fish in the pond. Pretty much what >>128763997 is saying, but you should also really focus on making memorable songs. I’d recommend WASP, 80-82 Priest, Motley Crue’s first two records and Scorpions for inspiration. (Especially Scorps, they were really good at making hits)
>>
>>128765203
And to add onto this, remember that sometimes less is more. A simple, but effective riff will be much more memorable to your average joe than neoclassical wank. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and it illustrates what I mean perfectly.

Heathen - Breaking the Silence
Leatherwolf - Leatherwolf
Liege Lord - Burn to My Touch
Nasty Savage - Indulgence
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
Pretty Maids - Future World
Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger
Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Terra Rosa - The Endless Basis
Voivod - Killing Technology
Viper - Soldiers of Sunrise
Whitesnake - S/T

In that case, I don't really hear much Heep in old Nintendo music. I guess Bird of Prey sort of sounds like something I'd hear in a Castlevania game, but the only metal bands I really hear a lot of consistent influence from is Judas Priest and Deep Purple. And you only hear that kind of stuff in action games.

Just barely under 30 minutes and it really benefits from that. The songs are quick, to the point, and punchy. Was also surprised at how much prog metal is here, too. Musically it's not that much heavier than Reign in Blood, the vocals are blackened but otherwise it's comparable outside of Christ Passion
>>
With that being said, now that I listen to it and Agent Orange side-by-side the latter is definitely lighter and sounds much more like plain thrash to my ears. I'll still leave Persection on the chart for now though

>>
>>128779928
What I go by is if you can realistically call a thrash album both death or black and not get flamed (like Kreator - Pleasure to Kill or Sepultura - Schizophrenia) then it ain't trad. You can't call Sodom - Agent Orange a black metal album but you could probably call Tapping the Vein death metal

Thrash is weird

Japan again surprises. This was released in 1983? It sounds way ahead of its time. Way heavier than what was around at the time, this is full blown speed metal. That's fair. After War Master they shed the grindcore influence completely and went in a more death-doom direction, then towards the end of their discography they became more strictly groove-oriented.

I fail to see how Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac is "speed metal". It sounds like beefier NWOBHM to me. It's heavy, it's raw, it's largely rocking and pentatonic, but it has nothing of the palm muted 16th note riffs that Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Running Wild have. It sounds like Raven but with noisier, heavier production.

Maybe I don't understand what "speed metal" is but I associate with riffs like this:

https://youtu.be/ozOXyQPLISct=29

Rather than this:

Or is what I'm thinking of actually a power metal trait?

I think that can kinda count as USPM doe

>>128802504

I see the thrash, where's the power? Iced Earth to me is more power/thrash.

I am blown away. Power Metal in 1983? Are there any more examples? Even earlier?

>Maybe I don't understand what "speed metal" is but I associate with riffs like this:
"Speed metal" isn't really a distinct sub-genre. It's just fast heavy metal.

>Or is what I'm thinking of actually a power metal trait?
I'd say so personally, I usually only hear those kinds of riffs in power metal and I associate it with that most of the time.

>>128802629
Sometimes it is sometimes it isn't, but yeah you can usually group it in with USPM

>>128802658
>Like how is this not speed metal?
Fast as a Shark is usually cited as the definitive speed metal song lol
>I see the thrash, where's the power? Iced Earth to me is more power/thrash.
Iced Earth is power/thrash, yes, but so is Metal Church. Metal Church is just more aggressive.

>>128802731
There's obviously Kill the King by Rainbow but Accept - Breaker from 1981 isn't too far off from European power metal imo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHVSQxg7v8s
>>
Riot - Warrior isn't really European styled power metal but it's definitely USPM, and it's from 1977. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeFALiKln3I

Holy shit, I don't think I've ever heard this kind of fast rolling drum beat (does it have a name) this early

https://youtu.be/8MQyI-JTkRM?t=189 Is probably the earliest you can find any power metal related stuff besides A Light in the Black. It's only in this part of the song, though.
>More aggressive than Iced Earth? I have to disagree.
Upon listening to the first song you posted, I have to agree. This is much more aggressive than Iced Earth's debut (only stuff from them I've heard) and it's certainly heavier than any Metal Church song I've heard.

some worthy of a mention and discussion at the very least
Trouble - Run to the Light
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
Dream Death - Journey Into Mystery
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
King Diamond - Abigail
Anthrax - Among the Living
Overkill - Taking Over
Kreator - Terrible Certainty

I'll concede on Bathory and Kreator I thought I saw some extreme genre metals albums here, must have got confused with another thread. But Screaming Bloody Gore was before Death went all progressive Death metal. First album still has that raw more aggressive Thrash vibes but maybe too much for this list.

How about Dark Quarterer?

Lizzy Borden - Visual Lies
Armored Saint - Raising Fear

Death metal in any capacity is a no-go even if it's congruent with thrash, sorry man

That's more like it, counting

Does Fighting the World deserve a place? it has some songs I like, but there's flaws with the album.
I think I've heard people call it a sellout album or say that manowar was trying to break into the mainstream. But I actually like the 3 poppier songs.

Anyways, I'm going off the youtube uploads, but it seems like Production is kinda thin/weak or something? Idk if the mixing/mastering or the guitar tone or what.

Here's the weird part, the titular "Fighting the World' seems to be mixed differently from the rest of the album or is kinda louder. Or maybe the guitar tone is different. I haven't actually checked db levels or anything like that though. I don't know if its just an issue with the uploads on youtube.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Basically it sounds better produced than the rest of the album.

Not a single weak song on that album.

Must be youtube. My mp3 versions ripped from my CD sounds amazing. And my dad's LP sounding great too.

Holy War sounds weak on youtube. My mp3 of it sounds huge.

Yeah I have always noticed that too. Seems like they decided to give special treatment to that song in particular, which is fine by me because that song sounds fucking awesome and is easily the highlight of the album. I do think the rest of it is kind of uninspired. The closer Black Wind, Fire and Steel is great, and I also like Violence and Bloodshed although that song is lacking some kind of climax. I don't care much for anything else on the album. Overall it feels like they just rushed through the songwriting on this one.

I wonder if they messed up the uploads then, or if they remastered the cd.
Is there any volume difference between fighting the world on your cd and the other tracks?

how does black wind fire & steel compare between the mediums?

.
I've seen people make fun of the songwriting on the title track too. Specifically one verse.
>The stripes on a tiger don't wash away, Manowar's made of steel not clay!

I think I was searching and came across an old discussion where they said this gem about that line:
>I can't help this image of somebody repeatedly pouring buckets of water over the poor tiger.
https://forum.maidenfans.com/threads/cheesiest-manowar-lyric.23155/#post-358177
I feel like i've seen another blog post that said that too, but idk.

Defender is nice, but it feels incomplete somehow. There's also a different recording that appears on a single. the arrangement is a also bit different on there.

Violence & Bloodshed is ok, though the lyrics are the corniest on the album. My other largest complaint about it, is the best riff in the song is only used twice.

They released a remaster in 2018 I think.

I have both. The remaster just look like every new album does in audacity. Basically like pic related. The original CD rip looks like an 80s album in audacity.
