The Post-Punk Revival scene of the 00s was actually the purest form of Indie Rock or Alternative Rock, since it brought the genre back to its the original concept, which is melodic pop rock fused with post-punk. The first wave of these bands like Television Personalities and Dolly Mixture had post-punk in their blood, then you got a legendary band like Pixies with a huge post-punk influence in their sound as well, then it all looped back in the 00s when edgy stuff like Grunge fell out of order cause they tried too hard to make alt rock political to emulate "punk". Early Arctic Monkeys is closer to what Indie Rock has always meant spiritually.
any music "revival" is shit, kill yourself
>>128763823Kurt was a hack and fake punk who wanted to be like Pixies
>>128763812Disagree. You make the mistake of failing to distinguish between the spirit of the original post-punk movement with the spirit of the post-punk revival. The original post-punk movement was about pushing rock into the avant-garde for the sake of both self expression and sonic innovation. Post-Punk is a throwback to the bands that did that in the late 70s, 23 years later. The post-punk revival bands were not avant-garde, they were the literal opposite, they were traditionalists. There are some very expressive bands in the genre like Interpol and Bloc Party, but it's not the same thing as Joy Division crafting a unique sound to perfectly express themselves. It's Interpol borrowing the sounds of Joy Division and The Chameleons as an already existing method to express themselves. The other mistake you make is failing to distinguish between the spirit of the post-punk movement with the spirit of indie rock. In indie rock's early days it was decidedly mundane, lo-fi, and often about everyday life. The Smiths and Pavement may have been smart and literate, but the music was warm, with unpretentious roots in early rock. This is the opposite of the post-punk vibe, which was cold, artsy, and avant-garde, more music for art galleries. IMO slacker rock defines indie more than any other subgenre, though twee pop is a close second. It's anti-commercial, lo-fi, and anti-rockstar, all things the post-punk revival isn't.>>128763823The garage rock revival was great, actually
>>128763812I love TP.
>>128763812Indie Rock has always existed
>>128763957>The original post-punk movement was about pushing rock into the avant-garde for the sake of both self expression and sonic innovation. Some early ones like Chrome were doing that, but then Television showed up which innovated the sound to be more melody based, not just experimenting for the sake of it. Then not too hard there was Talking Heads, which further pushed the sound in more of a pop space and Influenced LCD Soundsystem. To be fair, the emerging New wave scene also played some influenced in the 00s indie sound, but that largely came from that melodic strain of Post-punk. And Joy Division is an overused point of reference anyway, since their sister band New Order had more influence anyway (Arcade Fire for example)>The other mistake you make is failing to distinguish between the spirit of the post-punk movement with the spirit of indie rockThere's more than one side of Post-Punk really. Sure, you could hyperfixate on a band like The Fall or Wire, but there was also stuff like U2 which came about in the turn of the 80s and are more widely recognized. >In indie rock's early days it was decidedly mundane, lo-fi, and often about everyday life. The lo-fi aspect is slightly overrepresented as a genre marker. >This is the opposite of the post-punk vibe, which was cold, artsy, and avant-garde, more music for art galleries.Again, you're ignoring a whole section of post-punk like U2. >IMO slacker rock defines indie more than any other subgenreSlacker rock is harder to define generally besides a lower quality in sound.
>>128763812The first indie rock band in the modern sense is Buzzcocks.
>>128763812That whole scene has left basically zero cultural legacy while people still talk about nu-metal or emo
>>128763974Enough said. Didn't read the rest of the crap in this thread.
>>128763957indie rock belonged to early post punk
>>128763812gobledygook10/10 album though
>>128763823Pic related is the best post-punk album.
>>128763823Even the dixieland jazz revival?
>>128768698Punk is just normal rock (=Pop Rock, Garage Rock, Power Pop, Jangle Pop and Merseybeat). The Indie sound has always been a variant of normal rock (since the late 50s). You could say Indie got revived via punk and post-punk but Big Star sounded pretty Indie in the early 70s so I wouldn’t say it was completely dead before Punk revived it
