It's a crying shame. Prog nerds are so genre-autistic that they tend to dismiss any prog that has 0.0001% too much jazz influence as being jazz rock or fusion as if those are mutually exclusive with prog somehow. I can admit I'm guilty of similar thinking. One of my favorite things about prog is how it incorporates the music of the band's country. So of course American prog is going to be, on average, jazzier than British prog.
>>
>>128768146
The Muffins, Dave Newhouse, Rascal Reports, Motor Totemist Guild and 5uu's are almost never mentioned, which is a shame.

Did these theads die?

Anyhow, I finally listened to le furry porn album and those anons a while back weren't lying about this being some of the best stuff to come out of prog in the 2020s. Some random trans brony from Portland (can't make this shit up) has outdone all the big names who are still active like Neal Morse, Steven Wilson, and Marillion

Threads automatically archive/prune once they hit the end of page 10/hit page 11. That's the way this website's worked since inception. There is no jannie or mod proactively and prematurely archiving /prog/ threads. /prog/ just goes long stretches without posts due to inactivity, don't get bumped, and then get archived.

Very inconsistent line-up I guess, that and at the time Offering was their main thing and Magma was on the backburner.

You need to keep in mind that Magma disbanded in the 80s and the only reason they reformed in the 90s was because somebody offered them good money to get back together again and play a few shows. I don't think they were really serious about reviving the band for real until the 2000s.

The drums being mixed so low in the studio album is criminal given that Vander's drumming is half the appeal of Magma.

Fuck your preferences.
Mike Oldfield - Amarok
Flower Kings - Garden of Dreams
There's two hours of perfect music.

But if you want concept albums
Ayreon - The Human Equation (it's incredibly cheesy and awful on first listen)
Motorpsycho - The Death Defying Unicorn
Peter Hammill - The Fall of the House of Usher
Gong - The Radio Gnome Trilogy

>Smegma is an American experimental noise group formed in Pasadena, California in 1973.[1] Author Richard Meltzer became their vocalist in the late 1990s.[1] The group was included in the Nurse with Wound list and was featured on the cover of the August 2006 edition of The Wire.

No, but then again there's a ton of highly-rated shit on progarchives I don't consider prog.

Apart from Tubular Bells and Ommadawn, what Mike Oldfield should I listen to?
>>
>>128809657
Hergest Ridge, Incantations, Five Miles Out, Return to Ommadawn

How do we get Antoine back in Magma bros
>>
>>128810046
I don't think he'll ever come back, he and his sister allegedly left the band over the Nazi rumors surrounding Christian but chose not to really talk about it out of respect for the band.

already happened 20 years ago

but probably won't happen again, both are retired and I don't think they've been playing music in any official capacity in 5-8 years.
>>
Just heard Ommadawn and without hyperbole, without a single shred of exaggeration, it's the most beautiful music ever recorded in history
>>
>>128813721
i think mike's never been more locked in when making an album. there's not a single wasted moment or fluff, and i've never heard him reintroduce motifs better than on there. return to ommadawn is fine, it's nice that mike's discography ended on a long piece. i think people overrate it a fair bit just because it was his first album of note in a while

Bwoah, whatever.

Ommadawn and Tubular Bells on the first trip, when I head back tomorrow I'm listening to Amarok and Rick Wakemans Arthur Legends

Is he scat singing here or are these actual lyrics? I've always wondered how well the various singers comprehend Kobaian; you'd assume he would need a deep understanding of the language to just fire off vocals like that

yeah, maybe rog did have david do bass for him, but at least rog never depended on his wife for lyrics

>or are these actual lyrics
It's not improvised or nonsense. It's all written down and practiced, but there's no actual grammar/meaning here.
>>

>I bet none of the singers give a shit about kobaian.
You are mistaken. Magma's vocalists are actually extremely committed to Kobaïan, Christian Vander treats the band as an esoteric order, new members are treated to a prolonged initiation, that includes Zeuhl mythology, Kobaïan phonology, and rhythmic discipline, ending in an esoteric occult ritual, involving chanting and invocation of Kobaïan energies to seal a spiritual bond.

contrary to popular belief, Kobaïan is not an invention. Vander channeled Kobaïan through visionary states, recovering a sacred language predating all known human speech, carrying inherent archetypal power. performance demands gnostic surrender, apathy is impossible. Those who endure the rite cannot approach it lightly, the language exacts total devotion.

I had that feeling with Incantations. Utterly hypnotic stuff.
