>>128809562>>128808987My ranking of the songs on Wild Cat, in descending order:1. Fireclown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cHPQy_fJYQ2. Don't Touch Me There https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V8YmiawUik (This one is a banger but the riff reminds me too much of Hole in the Sky. Also the lyrics are about a "little girl", draw from that what you will.)7. Killers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZVo1d44WDA (Good song despite being so low on this list. It is this album's "epic")<power gap>8. Money https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QInVLki7msI (Kind of a stinker t.b.h. Repetitive, high pitched main riff, and the chorus sucks.)9. Wild Catz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaMMg1J564g (This sounds like a garage rock song, which is not necessarily bad. The production sounds different than the rest of the album. Also main vocalist Jess isn't doing vocals here but guitarist Robb Weir.)10. Insanity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqTg2QnbAdE (A lot of peoples' favorite song but it's my least favorite on the album. The gallop riff sounds cheesy to me and reminds me of Heart - Barracuda, and the time change at the end of the riff is weird. Maybe one day it will grow on me like this album did.)

So I listened to Warlord - Deliver Us (1983) because I was in the mood for some powerful 80s heavy metal that wasn't NWOBHM or speed metal. It is truly an excellent album. There's no rock 'n roll bullshit here, just pure, mythic, fantasy-tinged heavy metal, with a lot of melody and minor riffs moreso than pentatonic. It's a spiritual successor to Angel Witch's self-titled. There's everything from power metal to doom (The Rainbow) here. If this isn't on the 1983 list it deserves to be.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJkeqJqlbWU&list=OLAK5uy_kA7L5caczKO4rbjSd0cISguItCflefjAA&index=1

Manowar - Battle Hymn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtNqj9g8HJE3:23-4:08 is one of my favorite segments in any metal song. Beautiful songwriting. Rest of the song's fantastic too, but this is the standout imo
>>128825561I sometimes feel like the lyrics of section was a little corny. >strange losses. Men Died>we crossed a starlit sky.> And still no space and time>We'll catch the wind. Why were the losses strange? What does it mean to have no space and time? The sudden shift from heavy metal to what is almost like a lullaby with a choir alongside chimes is a bit jarring. But a lot of longer manowar songs do that kinda sudden shift. For what its worth I think the intro to the song is incredible.

anyways if you like that part of the fast as a shark solo you might like the solo in this song:https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=v0jVb9TmfRMThe title track on Ram It Down.
>>128826716That and the 16th pedal tone riff.
>>128826742pedal riffs are very common in all genres of metal
>>128825686Other lyrics on that song make no sense as well. "Over the top of their vanquished pride" Huh? I've learned to become pretty forgiving of metal lyrics or even to ignore them, they're usually the weakest part of the song.
>>128826723Wait, this was supposed to be a "bad" JP album? This is pure speed metal, I think. Is there anything this band can't do?Yes, I do like it when the neoclassical part kicked in. The technique is spot on but compositionally the tonal center shifts/progression feels kind of weird (I'm not a classically trained musician, I'm just giving my opinion).
>>128826760Yeah but I mean that specific combination of palm muted 16th note pedaling on just the root at high BPM, plus the neoclassical solo, is very Kai Hansen.https://youtu.be/kM5adh7Uktc?t=238 (not the "perfect" example, just off the top of my head)
>>128826774>Wait, this was supposed to be a "bad" JP album? This is pure speed metal, I think. Is there anything this band can't do?Aside from that one, there are some very good songs on Ram it Down. "Heavy Metal":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AYB-Gjo6cUIf you think ram it down is speedy, wait till you listen to "Hard as Iron":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW9bAXTW1x4In my opinion the best song on the album and one of judas priest's greatest songs, the epic "Blood Red Skies":https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=aORXZiGeIdAAs for why do people think its bad? I think its the other songs on there that are the ones which people disliked or found contentious.
bumpin
Kai Hansen needs more recognition as the father or European Power Metal. He pretty much laid the template for the European Power Metal sound with the Helloween EP and Walls of Jericho, for all the bands that came after: Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Stormwarrior, etc., and he continued it with Gamma Ray. I think only Running Wild were contemporaneous and even they may have been influenced, since they're both from Hamburg. Of course Hansen was probably inspired by Judas Priest, Accept and Iron Maiden, but still the man is foundational to the genre, like Iommi is for heavy metal/doom, EVH and Rhoads were for metal solos, Yngwie was for neoclassical metal, Hetfield for thrash, etc. He was central to this sound.
>Throw the first key into the sea of hate>Throw the second key into the sea of fear>Throw the third key into the sea of senselessness>The fourth key belongs into the sea of greed>And the fifth into the sea of ignoranceWhat about keys six and seven? It's implied that key six has something to do with disease (the bridge) and at the seventh sea he confronts satan.
>>128826764>I've learned to become pretty forgiving of metal lyrics or even to ignore them, they're usually the weakest part of the song.Yeah, a lot of metal songs have bizarre lyrics. >>128826764>Other lyrics on that song make no sense as well. "Over the top of their vanquished pride" Huh? That one kinda makes sense.>I've learned to become pretty forgiving of metal lyrics or even to ignore them, they're usually the weakest part of the song. There are metal songs that have good lyrics (even from manowar).
Melodic heavy metal is the best. Whether it's Iron Maiden or HammerFall.
>>128808990Viper - Soldiers of Sunrise needs to be on there.
>>128838717It's 88So is Hypertrace
I get filtered by falsetto vocals
>>128838993I never understood why metal vocalists can't just sing normally like Mathias Blad or Jørn Lande (Masterplan), or Candlemass's first two singers. It always has to be some weird vocal acrobatics. I can stomach Halford and Kiske-style vocals but I don't like King Diamond's sound. Also I never understood falsetto vocals in mainstream music like in Stayin' Alive. It sounds stupid af, how did it even become popular?
The older I get the less patience I have for extreme metal and the more I just wanna black some Priest
>>128838974Check the post again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lgaaTvMPb8This is a damn good song. Great main riff (they nailed it with this one), some good solos, and nice vocals. This is heavy metal!
>>128838974Ample Destruction is from 84
>>1288375603 votes, it's on there now
>>128839072>extreme metalA lot of it these days is just so incomprehensible and jarring, there’s no good riffs or anything to really get into. We long ago passed the point where shock value ceased to have any meaning.
>>128839692Love some extreme metal, but for the most part its just a gimmick/crutch to make up for lackluster songwriting
I think there's a limit on how "BRVTA"L a song can get.Mixing and mastering has its limits. After a certain amount of speed, stuff starts bleeding together. You can only tune down so far. You can only have so much distortion.Even before that, there could be a point at which stuff stops sounding extreme and starts sounding absurd.
https://youtu.be/CquOTDSZbIc?t=19This song works so much better with a female vocalist, I can't believe no band covered it this way. Ignore the AI avatar, just hear the music/voice.
>>128839072>extreme metalLife's too short and there's too much good music out there to waste time on that noise.

Another great Lizzy album. Definitely more melodic and easygoing than what I expected going in, but there's still some great music here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkajL6nY3aohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R4912PMMfMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9uGb_214ukhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41oo2u3kvA4

Just want to give a shout-out to OP and other contributors for having the good kind of autism and keeping these threads alive (especially as /metal/ is an unusable trash heap now). I haven't posted as much recently due to IRL stuff and holidays coming up but there's a number of modern releases both recent and upcoming I want to post and share here eventually.
>>128841384OP here, thanks bro>(especially as /metal/ is an unusable trash heap now)Last time I checked out one of those threads my filters caught 85% of it lol>but there's a number of modern releases both recent and upcoming I want to post and share here eventually.I also want to devote more time to new releases, mainly so we can get modern yearly charts - which I'd argue are far more important for newcomers.
>>128841504Why? Shouldn't newcomers learn the classics?
>>128841384Yeah this general is a nice alternative to /metal/. I still go there but it often delves into stupid drama between the resident attention seekers.
>>128841523Absolutely, but there's a lot more albums coming out now than in the early '80s. If someone already knows the classics but has no idea where to go after that, I think charts for modern releases would be greatly helpful.
>>128841531I don't like any of the crap that gets posted there.
https://youtu.be/qTq57meTXCo?t=106Underrated proggy band.
https://youtu.be/7XdOiuAnIi4?t=185This album is such a masterpiece. Power Metal but with proggy and even metalcore influences. Absolutely blistering solos. It's almost 20 years old and it's the freshest thing I've heard in years.
>>128841984Wasn't over the moon with the first one you posted but this sounded really fucking cool. Love the keyboard duel, reminds me of Rainbow in a way.
>>128842016This album is incredible. It's like Angra but heavier and influenced by Dream Theater instead of jazz. It kind of reminds me of Nevermore in its dark and heavy approach. Progressive Power Metal that isn't afraid to take risks, not at all run of the mill. Way ahead of its time too, it sounds like what youtuber guitarists would be doing 10 years later. The first song I posted exemplifies that in the solo and start-stop riffs.
>>128842139I don't listen to prog often but I'll download it anyway. >The first song I posted exemplifies that in the solo and start-stop riffs. The riffing was definitely unique, I don't think I've heard that style before.

>>128809012I don't know why it took me this long, this album is incredible. Truly a one of a kind atmosphere and energy
>>128838993>>128839065Pure falsetto singing, like King Diamond, often suck. But most metal singing in a higher register is mixed-voice.
>>128846369i downloaded this years ago with an incomplete tracklist (didn't have remember tomorrow). was only like a year ago that i realized that that song included and flabbergasted that it was 3rd. completely ruins the flow of prowler/sanctuary/running free. remember tomorrow is a good song but i still can't to this day add it back in at 3.

Gearing up for a trad weekend. Either gonna listen to The Number of the Beast, British Steel, or Machine Head. Leaning toward Iron Maiden
>>128840092>that noiseYou know, I was trying to reach for another descriptor, but “noise” is the most accurate label. Hardly any of it is coherent, just loud and noxious.

>>128852516I think it's one of Priest's dumber songs lyrically and a step down from pretty much everything else on DotF. But my main problem with it (and I failed to articulate this lol) is the chorus and just how much "love bites" is repeated in it. Never been a fan of that song.

>>128852554I think "Eat Me Alive" sounds stupider.
1983 was a watershed year for metal. Nothing was the same after that year. Comparing metal from 1982 to 1984 is like comparing two different eras. It's like 2022 for "AI", comparing 2021 to 2023 or now.

TEST
I guess it's working for nowMari Hamada - Noah (live, 1983) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSx7Gr-FWGo
About on par with Thunder in the East, maybe slightly weaker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBTwLC6RHr4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8SnuNyaBi8
Embarrassing to admit but I really like Sabaton.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBWrRuJ0a4gI like these instrumental songs so much more than the ones with a singer on Trilogy. When he's the focus, Yngwie makes neoclassical masterpieces. Having a singer just debases his compositions.
>>128859585A simple example is to compare the songs on Screaming for Vengeance with the songs on Defenders of the Faith. Defenders is much heavier and faster and already has the "speed metal" sound. Screaming for Vengeance embodies the sound of metal before 1983: heavy metal, NWOBHM, etc.1984: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTWiGtuKz4A1982: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN7Lv0PR4Q8
