good but it overstays it's welcome a bit. one of zappa's best lineups though

Honestly, as the other anon said, it’s technically his most skilled and proficient band, and they sound great! but it’s not my favorite set list of his material. And also, im a fan of zapps humor, and if I saw this live it would be a fantastic performance to see just for the showmanship of it all, but that doesn’t really translate to replayability for me. It’s more an album that i would listen to once and come back to maybe occasionally listen again every now and then.

Conversely, here are some live Zappa tunes that melt my brain and i replay nonstop over the years, by the same band as the Roxy line up.

as much as i would love a higher fidelity recording of this particular song IDK if my body could handle it

And then of course this classic, again pretty much the same band lineup i think

So it’s not zapp, it’s not the band, it’s literally just that im not the biggest fan of these songs and this show.

Cheepnis is fucking awesome and i have listened to that one regularly, and wish he would have done a proper studio version of that song.

What live Zappa would you say it's his best?
>>

zappa is weird cause a lot of his music is a clusterfuck of live recordings and studio recordings stitched together, a lot of his studio albums have live recordings on them and vice versa.
i like a lot of his 88 tour albums, i think the best band you never heard in your life showcases how fucking talented his lineups were. baby snakes (the movie) is well worth a watch just to see how crazy his shows were, but it's a meaty 2 hours 50 minutes.

My favorite Zappa record.

Honestly the thing about “what’s his best” depends on what kinda fan you are.

My favorite live rock stuff he’s done is mostly probably on Weasels ripped my flesh. My favorite contemporary classical live Zappa would be Yellow Shark

Honestly, i could make my own live album based on live songs I’ve pulled from his various live albums more than i would enjoy one singular live album Zappa has put out. For example,
Here’s a rare live rendition of “stick it out” about 9 years before he released it on “joes garage”, it’s from the Flo and Eddie era and it’s a lot heavier, hard rock version than the joes garage version.

This live version of call any vegetable also with Flo and Eddie, absolutely rips and is also a hard rock version of the song

And lastly here’s another killer never properly released or recorded in a studio song by zapps which is unfortunate because it’s a great one, yet again, Flo and Eddie era

You can really tell in these early 70s cover Zappa was trying to emulate and keep up with Led Zeppelin, deep purple and these other hard rock bands that were freshly developing at the time Lol.
