Hollis always wanted to make the latter day stuff, he just lacked the budget up front. Synth pop was cheaper to make, and after some success he started adding a little of the more organic stuff on Colour of Spring. Album was a hit, change in direction proved successful, and the band basically scored a blank check from their label for their next album. Hollis finally had his financial backing, and that's how Spirit of Eden happened. That the band weathered the commercial implications of such a move and still managed to put out Laughing Stock before disbanding is honestly impressive.
