The reasons are complicated but I gathered it was mostly because he was trying to make music the way he'd made it for his first three albums and that just wasn't giving him satisfactory results anymore, so he tried to abandon that more rigid system and go for a looser approach, but *that* didn't make him feel any better, so the whole thing just felt equally frustrating. This is actually where the title 'Before and After Science' comes from, the fact that it was made with and without the aid of his previous composing methods
