Which is the better compilation album released in 1987?

When I was a teenager, I used to worship Joy Division and used to say that I couldn't understand why people could prefer The Smiths and think they were the best incel/depression band there was, when JD was much better. Today at 27 I think it's the opposite. Both have annoying vocalists though.

Why not both?

Substance, because it coheres as a concept. LTB is obviously full of great songs but it's just a bunch of shit randomly thrown together, plus it severs the Rubber Ring > Asleep sequence. The covers and titles are obviously all classic, but in the long run it's a shame these old Smiths comps have become canonical because keeping them in print leaves out some significant b-sides. The Smiths never cut a bad track (no, not even Golden Lights), and deserve their own comprehensive Substance.

This is. But between the two listed, the New Order one obliterates the Smiths one, mostly because the Smiths is a girl band

IMO Joy Division/New Order have a better sound than The Smiths ever did, but Morrissey is a better songwriter/lyricist than anyone in JD/NO and Marr is a better and more interesting musician than any of them. I love both bands and I think they're two of the best rock/alternative bands ever, but if I honestly made a list of my personal favorite bands, neither would make the list. I think The Smiths have lots of wonderful songs, but I also think they unfortunately sound too much like a soft rock band much of the time. I think the peak of JD/NO was right at the transition of the two bands, when JD was getting grander, brighter, and more melodic, and NO was still melancholy., but that's literally a 2 year period, from '79 (the Transmission single) to '81 (the Movement album).

If I had to pick one, I'd go with Louder Than Bombs, as it's arguably the best thing The Smiths ever did. However, Ceremony and Temptation are two of the best singles by any band ever.

JD/NO is one of the most imitated bands ever, but I don't think any of the bands that copied them came close to them. While I do slightly prefer The Smiths, there are a number of Smiths-influenced bands I actually like more than The Smiths, like Suede.

>Suede
They are more influenced by Bowie than The Smiths

There's no real reason to listen to Substance in its entirety, just take Ceremony and Temptation. You're better off going through the actual albums themselves. Can't say the same for Louder than Bombs. It's their best work.

Maybe but everyone is influenced by Bowie.

I'll go with New Order just because the Smiths have become colossally overrated.

The Smiths by a wide margin. LtB is their best release.

Temptation (1987) is better than Temptation (1981)
