A couple reasons>kurt cobain was autistic and obsessed with recording audio since he was a kid>he and they did so many demos, and he would keep tweaking songs over and over for years, there’s like 5 different versions of Sappy which was not really officially released except I guess on the No Alternative compilation >supposedly they were big as an underground band before nevermind so people were recording shows, bootlegs of this were released and then because they got so huge, people wanted more, so lots of bootlegs were released like outcesticide and stuff like that>he died so they have milked basically any recording he ever did even him just fucking noodling on the guitar on the montage of heck soundtrack

He consciously created the image of a person who did not care about anything, and at the same time he obsessively studied the music scene around him and all his competitors, all his life he kept diaries, where he described all aspects of recording, up to the placement of microphones.
