Merry Christmas!

This thread is dedicated to the discussion of traditional heavy metal and its many sub-genres. Hard rock that is both historically and musically adjacent to traditional metal is also welcomed. Lastly, if this is your first time posting here please view the link below:

If you have to ask this, it probably isn’t and you should take what you want to talk about somewhere else.

You can trace the origins of symphonic metal (much like any other melodic style) to Rainbow. Savatage - Gutter Ballet from 1989 is an important release, too.
>>
>>128929435
If you say so! I love Rainbow. I'd love to give the nod to them ultimately....
I feel like all of the elements came together by the 90s though.

yeah the first riff is incredible, thats why i posted it. It's one of those songs that has a riff that immediately catches you.

A lot of the modern elements are there, but his vocals are kind of Sisters of Mercy-ish. Not something we hear in symphonic metal bands since (afaik).

>yeah the first riff is incredible, thats why i posted it. It's one of those songs that has a riff that immediately catches you.
it really is, it lost me when the vocals came into play but otherwise it's great.

this song's miles better by virtue of the vocals not being ass

>>128923840
Prong is like the bridge of old and nu-metal. They were like thrash and industrial guys, but influenced nu metal big time. Tommy Victor IS a riffmeister though. Still like a hired gun for other bands. Like Danzig.
>>
>>128930724
i'll probably check savior machine out. apparently they're also considered prog as well.

>>128930736
i like the vocals, but while it's probably not as divisive as harsh vocals, it's still probably something like thrash/punk vocals which aren't everyone's thing.

>50/50 but i've been considering removing groove metal from the blacklist for a while desu
Is there a reason?

>>128930789
Nu metal isn't trad metal*, but aside from that does the genre count as metal?
Some people say it's not really influenced by metal (like uh metal archives). I've heard some people say that nu-metal bands have very little in common with with eachother, and that it was more like a scene than a musical genre.

*I can probably find a few exceptions or borderline songs from nu-metal bands.
>>
>>128931220
>Nu metal isn't trad metal*
For sure. I'm just saying he came from the Thrash world, but influenced a lot of those nu metal dudes.
I'd say nu metal is metal though. At least the ones who didn't do too much rapping or any at all.
>>
>>128931220
>https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=5387
Not to my ears. They're just not that skilled. But they had a unique sound. A lot of the symphonic stuff is there, but you got a sort of Bowie esque/Sisters of Mercy vocalist (if you recall, even the name Saviour Machine is a Bowie song).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPdB6w0jOHI
>>
>>128931220
>Is there a reason?
Pretty much comes down to groove metal coming directly from thrash and quite a few established thrash bands switched to it in the ‘90s. There’s just too much historical and musical connection to not have it set in stone.
>>
>>128890602
>Glam is about getting pussy power is about Lord of the Rings

An example of an exception. Here's a Power Metal song, that's to some extent about both:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT-TlX7bzGQ
>>
it's not literally about those 2 exact topics, but it kinda fits in those broad categories of song topics.
>>
>>128931271
>For sure. I'm just saying he came from the Thrash world, but influenced a lot of those nu metal dudes.
I'm only heard a few songs from prong, but I also know they had a lot of groove metal stuff. Which people call an ancestor of nu-metal.

>I'd say nu metal is metal though. At least the ones who didn't do too much rapping or any at all.

Vocal delivery might change sub-genre (like how "cookie monster vocals" are a signature of death metal), but IMO it wouldn't make something not-metal. Though you may have just been saying they're less likely to have metal riffs.
>>
>>128899866
Are you going to do yearly charts for the 90's as well?
>>
>>128933005
When the time comes, yes. Though I admit that the prospect is somewhat intimidating. That period roughly spanning 1992-1997, not withholding a few outliers here and there - is going to be tricky. There’s plenty of great stoner, doom, and power records, but I haven’t come across much trad (let alone the good shit) from those years. The ‘90s charts will likely be dominated by those aforementioned sub-genres.

This might be a borderline example, since some of the verses almost rapping rather than singing. And while the main riff is pretty "trad", the drums and bass might be less so.

Yeah I couldn't find anything either. Both bands had barely gotten their start in 1985 when Feel the Fire came out and one is from Seattle and the other is from New Jersey. That might as well been two different countries in the 80s.

A theory is that Overkill read about Queensrÿche in metal magazines like Kerrang and thought they were getting too much praise.

We've Come for You All is really good. A great groove metal album with some sick drumming. Best drumming I've heard from Charlie Benante.

The Evil in You is a good power metal album. Catchy melodies and Mats Levén's vocals are always top notch.

The Blessed Hellride is also good. I thought it sounded like a mix of Ozzy with Zakk Wylde and Alice in Chains heaviest moments.

Strange? More like one of the most retarded decisions I've ever heard a band make on an album. That's something you should be locked up in an asylum for.
>>
>>128969793
Hopefully I'll remember to fix the track order next listen.
>>
>>128969836
Apparently it was their producer (Frank Bornemann) who thought the quality of sound would suffer horrifically if an LP side were longer than 20 minutes, so they cut two songs.

Still, no excuse for not putting the correct sequencing on the CD that came out the same year or any of the reissues.
>>
>>128970215
They could still have done the correct order minus the two cut songs on the LP.

First Yngwie album, and I wish I had more to say but this is just very solid, well-performed metal. Trilogy Suite Op:5 was my favorite but every song here's at the very least pretty good. Vocalist was good too, he obviously takes after Dio but it's an admirable effort.

A bit strange because lots of Groove Metal take more than a handful of influences from Extreme Metal. Sure, you get goofier or more accessible bands like White Zombie but also Metalcore/Groove hybrids like Merauder.

While on the topic of modern trad: the album of the year just got released. Been following this band for a decade now. Just released their 2nd album. They have shades of 80s Metallica worship but they're also their own thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDWbB4je4IU
>>
>>129008013
Go for it dude! Assuming the cap is 10 years and you're doing it like I do the yearly charts, I'll nominate the following:

Cirith Ungol - Dark Parade (2020)
Crimson Storm - Livin' on the Bad Side (2025)
Flight - A Leap Through Matter (2018)
Glacier - The Passing of Time (2020)
Helms Deep - Treacherous Ways (2023)
Judas Priest - Firepower (2018)
Riot City - Burn the Night (2019)
>>
>>129010406

It's got some damn big shoes to fill, A Leap Through Matter was a fantastic release.
>>
>>129010788
>It's got some damn big shoes to fill
i know. the closer on the album is one of the best closing songs on an album i've ever heard. my eyes legit water at how well it wraps up the entire thing. i wish they would tour the states but small bands like them rarely do if ever.
>>
Europe - The King Will Return https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dLWr67HSbI
>>
Flight - Hypatia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acZ2wP1Bdhg

First impressions are stellar. Blistering first song with an awesome bridge towards the end and some great lead guitarwork. Compared to the previous album, the sound here isn't as reminiscent of Judas Priest, and is more like '70s Rush if anything.
>>
>>128934327
Some would consider them "heavy metal but not metal". Some believe that pre-80s is heavy metal and that thrash was the start of "just metal".

Huh? AC/DC's sound (bar a few songs) is pure rock and roll. They're not a metal band.
>Some believe that pre-80s is heavy metal and that thrash was the start of "just metal".
I've never run across this. Typically the prevailing viewpoint among those types is that pre-80s metal is almost always congruent with hard rock - which is correct. There's not much "true" metal from that decade.
>>
>>129011864
What I mean is that some people think *heavy* metal is more "poppy hard rock" (like glam), while just *metal* (without the "heavy") would be used to mean thrash or hardcore punk.

We're the Metal inquisition, we've come to search you out
Once you to see things our way, you won't have any doubt
You better wear some leather, you better wear some chains
Don't try to resist us, it'll only bring you pain

We'll hunt you down like animals, we're going to have a chase
We'll beat you till you're senseless, we'll never leave a trace
We'll round you up for trial, we'll bust you on the spot
We'll treat you all like criminals, you'll be a sorry lot

And if you're not a Metalhead you might as well be dead
We're the Metal inquisition... We sentence you to death... by guillotine!

We'll take you to our leaders, we'll take you to our court
Arrest you in the name of hell and play a deadly sport
And if we find you guilty, your punishment is death
You better look the other way, you'd better hold your breath

So if you're in a disco or in a country bar
You better get the hell out, we know who you are
You better get some Metal and play it really loud
You have the chance to join us, the mighty and the proud

And if you're not a Metalhead you might as well be dead
We're the Metal inquisition... We sentence you to death... by guillotine!

But if we catch you punking, you know the penalty
We'll come down with a vengeance, we'll never set you free
We're the Metal inquisition, we're not too hard to find
Don't get any closer, we might just blow your mind

And if you're not a Metalhead you might as well be dead
We're the Metal inquisition... We sentence you to death... by guillotine!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apmXAfwdb_Q

>>129013034
Unless something goes CATASTROPHICALLY wrong (like a dull blade for instance), the guillotine is the quickest and most efficient way of execution. It'd be like shutting out a light.
>>
>>129013076
A firing squad or a (proper) hanging would be pretty quick as well. Although with a hanging I guess you would notice that you are falling.
>>
>>129013101
Yeah hanging and firing squads aren't far behind in terms of efficiency. Although for a clean kill by firing squad the shots would all have to be at lethal points like the head or heart. Hanging is comparable to a guillotine but has the potential to give the guy in the noose quite a bit of pain.
>>
>>129013129
>has the potential to give the guy in the noose quite a bit of pain.
That's why it needs to be a proper hanging, where the neck snaps instantly. Helium should be very good as well, but it's not used in executions.
>>
>>129013167
>That's why it needs to be a proper hanging, where the neck snaps instantly.
Ah, with a proper hanging then I'm inclined to say that would be the more humane way to go out. They're really quite comparable, though.

Is it metal? I feel like it should be.

Haven't listened to this one yet but I doubt it's much different sonically from Fly By Night. So proggy hard rock with some metal here and there
>>
>>129045011
It's a lot heavier and darker than Fly By Night in parts. I feel like Bastille Day is basically the prototype for Iron Maiden.
>>
>>129045049
>I feel like Bastille Day is basically the prototype for Iron Maiden.
Just checked it out, and it's halfway there, definitely an influence. But I feel like Hard Lovin' Man by Deep Purple lays the ultimate claim to that galloping style riff and Child in Time for the theatrics/atmosphere.

Yeah, we can start. I'm automatically putting Thundersteel and Mindcrime on there since I feel they're locked in.

My personal suggestions:

Anthem - Gypsy Ways
Blind Guardian - Battalions of Fear
Cloven Hoof - Dominator
Crimson Glory - Transcendence
Fates Warning - No Exit
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
Helstar - A Distant Thunder
Liege Lord - Master Control
Pantera - Power Metal
Razor - Violent Restitution
Running Wild - Port Royal
Sanctuary - Refuge Denied
Screamer - Target Earth
Slayer - South of Heaven
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today
Vicious Rumors - Digital Dictator

oh wait forgot to ask if Hell-o fits the bill. It's basically a punk album with thrash elements. I'm not even sure I'd call it crossover (tho I'm not too well versed in the punk/crossover scene)

Starts off great but loses some serious steam in the second half. I can't explain it but it almost feels like the singer is struggling to keep up with the faster tempo songs.

By the way, this is actually an alternate version of the album artwork. As you can see, this version kinda looks like a sword and sorcery pulp novel cover.
Virgin Steele had a tendency to release the same album with a bunch of different album cover art.

It's hard to find better scans of this album artwork.
I found a site that has high quality scans (including this album). But they want you to sign up to view them without water marks, and their registrations are closed: https://albumartexchange.com/

Finally. A year where I remember when a favourite album of mine came out.

I nominate Hittman-S/T.

Kept me company through a transitional summer. Bangers throughout.

Also, let me repeat, for the modern "traditional" I renominate Rocka Rollas
>>
>>129046447
>Always try Last.fm for cover art.
I'll try that in the future. I usually look at musicbrainz and discogs, since they also have album liner notes.

I saw smaller versions of that scan, but I noticed there's a large white smudge below the logo. It's probably wear and tear, but I briefly (and kinda jokingly) wondered to myself if it was a cum stain.

>>129046443
>Got you covered, I actually have an account for that place lol

Thanks. It's interesting how he had to do a bunch of work to fix issues with the scan.
https://albumartexchange.com/covers/606752-age-of-consent
>Started with high res scan which looked okay, but had lots of damage around the borders, and some crease lines. Rebuilt text, removed lines, color corrected, replaced edges of the image with a smaller better scan scaled up.

Related to Last.fm, you need to remove the resolution from the URI if you want the original image.

>Manowar · Kings of Metal

There's some very good songs on there, but i've seen people complain about the mix and a few of the tracks. I don't think it's a bad mix, but people say that the guitar is kinda weak (and I can see that at least on the youtube version). The tracks I saw the most complaints about are "Sting of the Bumblebee", "Warriors Prayer" and "Pleasure Slave".

Sting of the Bumblebee is a cover of Flight of the Bumblebee (a classical piece), but on piccolo bass (meaning it's 4 strings are tuned the same as a standard guitar).
I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but some people don't like that kinda instrumental. Guitar World called it the 9th worst guitar solo of all time, and left this hilarious review:
>This manic, mindless masturbatory wankfest (played on bass, which technically is a guitar) becomes more unbearable when you consider that DeMaio most likely performed it clad only in a loincloth, his hairy chest abundantly oiled and puffed out with pride. Sometimes it sounds like his woolly mammoth popped out to help him slap the strings. This metal is as heavy as the foil used to wrap a stick of Wrigley’s gum.
I do have to question the reviewer's taste since they think the amazing guitar solo in Living Color's "Cult of Personality" is bad

Warrior's Prayer isn't even a song, it's basically a spoken story about Manowar's self-inserts.

"Pleasure Slave" is so absurdly misogynistic that I wonder if it's tongue in cheek or like a "Villain song" or something. Whatever the case may be, it's definitely made worse (or at least cornier) by the samples of women moaning.

Aside from that people complain that's it's not really focused on heavy stuff. You have not one, not two, but three ballads on the album. Ok, I don't know if you can really call "Kingdom Come" a ballad. Maybe a Power Ballad? There's nothing wrong with it, but "Heart of Steel" and "The Crown and the Ring (Lament of the Kings)" are definitely better IMO.

How do people think it compares to Virgin Steele's Age of Consent from the same year? They're the band that gets the most comparison to Manowar. The weird thing is that despite being significantly less famous, their mixing often seemed better.
