If you have any interest in Sun Ra, this release is totally essential. At a glance it looks like just some miscellaneous comp for collectors, but its anything but.
Sun Ra wasn’t allowed by his early labels to use vocals on his early records. These singles are a parallel history of the Arkestra. Humorous and inventive.
It’s a far cry from the self imposed stoicism of “afro futurism” or all that academic yaya that came later.
Also includes his work with “The Cosmic Rays” a short lived doowop group he put together, and extended versions of instrumental album cuts like Super Blonde.
This is a great introduction to Sun Ra and also a treat for hardcore fans.
I can’t say enough nice things about this release. If you have any interest in Sun Ra check it out.
