Why did boomers lose their shit when this song released to the point where it was downloaded illegally millions of times and forever ruined the music industry as we know it? It's not even that good of a song, what was all the hype about?

if you were to take them out of their host bodies and force them to have a fist fight, do you suppose Tom Cruise's ego could beat up Barbra Streisand's ego?

IIRC it wasn't just that it was d/led by many, it's that it made its way onto Napster before it was even released, and in an unfinished state I believe. Labels had basically settled into an armistice with bootleggers who put out the physical discs you'd find at market stalls and record shops, because those were usually twice as expensive as official CDs, with subpar/wildly varying sound quality, and obtaining them required a degree of know-how that most normies didn't bother with. Piracy was strictly a nerd/fanboy thing, often to the of benefit of whatever group it hovered around (see the famous Depeche Mode quote). Smart 'leggers also omitted official material, so as not to compete directly with the big boys. But this was something else: music straight off the same discs that majors were pushing in stores worldwide, and the only barrier to entry was internet access. And now it appeared Universal were getting beaten to the punch. With the industry being at its absolute peak, it reacted according to turbocapitalist logic.

It was bound to ignite at some point; aside from being recorded by a high-profile act, the song itself is almost entirely incidental, like some Habsburg failson's assassination leading to the breakout of WW1. It's notable however, in a purely symbolic way, that I Disappear was to be featured on an all-star movie soundtrack, which was one of those things that truly soured people on standard industry practices: paying $17.99 for one track from your favorite band and it turned out to be some shitty trip hop crossover experiment.

>paying $17.99 for one track
there is no way this is real, did boomer really?
>>
>>128922813
You bought a CD based on one song you liked and hoped there would be more good songs but usually there wasn't. So yeah, you essentially paid 20 bucks for one song.

They got mad that the demo leaked and people heard it before it was done, which led to Lars losing his shit and the lawsuit.
