Before anybody says "The Mars Volta aren't prog", RYM says they are:https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/the-mars-voltaI was going to make the OP about Tool but they're described as "Progressive Metal" rather than "Progressive Rock"

You DO listen to instrumental prog metal, right /prog/?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGDXjY8ARLY
>>128949020>>128949026ok but can i just get the Mars Volta albums without the vocals or do i really have to edit them out myself? i did De-Loused, it's just over 20 minutes now. what other album is worth it?
>>128949163It's ahrighthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRcHiYZFzf4
>>128949163aimlessly busy and tunelessno groove, no purpose, no punch>>128949280melodic at least, but boring
>>128949270Give it time. The vocals will grow on you.
2025 has been a pretty weak year for new prog albums. I've listened to the first of the top 20 albums as voted on https://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?syears=2025 and I've got to say that #1 on the list is at least a competent album, while the rest is meh at best with some nice moments.Full album is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpasbxapB3k&list=PL-a5D4Kp1Vz8jhjAc4OHXefQjMbtio3liam I missing something?
>>128949020>Maybe i'll breakdownok fine, go for it
Does /prog/ like XTC?>inb4 "not prog"
>>128949797IQ and Discipline are highly rated simply because they have a big fanbase. As an objective fan of both of those bands, their 2025 releases were 3 stars at best. I haven't listened to their new albums yet, but I can imagine Karfagen and Jordsjo suffer from the same problem.
Today, it's Kayak
>>128949163Can you stop posting this shitty song and band?
>>128949270Nothing wrong with Cedric's singing>>128950119Which shitty song and band? The song and band I posted is very good, not shitty. Here's another from the same band.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mCWn9Jt5Wk&t=60
Dunno, man. The last time I was excited about a prog rock band is when I discovered Thinking Plague. Their 1989-2012 albums are extremely well done masterpieces and nobody seems to know them.Since then I'm just like relistening to the big ones' albums (Soft Machine, King Crimson, Gentle Giant) once or twice a year and otherwise I listen to contemporary composed/20th century "classical" music.Prog just doesn't give me the stimulation it used to.
>>128949815They're more prog then every other "prog" band by their time
>>128949020I tried posting Connor Kaminski (late 2025, pic related) in /metal/ but got zero replies.>>128950846This is new prog that's actually adventurous and sounds good. Layers, pads, orchestra, synths... here's a very accessible one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPE84PEu1foI never see these names on /mu/ but would love to start this discussion because they're incredible. >Sithu Aye>Jakub Zytecki>Intervals>PliniWhy doesn't anyone try new music anymore?
>>128949026>Before anybody says "The Mars Volta aren't prog"do people really say that?
>>128951923I honestly think metal is too simplistic a genre to mix with prog. I like RIO/avant more because it adds complexity instead of diluting it.
