STEELY DAN STILL SOUNDED GOOD BEFORE ON LOWER QUALITY SYSTEMS BUT NOW EVERYTHING ELSE SOUNDS LIKE GARBAGE

Why did you redeem the Sony??? They have long stopped making even just decent headphones. So it's both because the headphones are shit and your music is shit.
Try real audio brands like I dunno fucking Sennheiser or something. There are dozens of good known and less known brands of audio equipment, Sony make Playstations and dishwashers.

In my dumb opinion, you should look for a very neutral set of monitoring headphones and learn to appreciate the mixes for what they are. You only have to spend a hundred and some peanuts.

Well, for bluetooth headphones yes, there's better out there than Sony, but for wired MDR-7506 are still great neutral/studio headphones. Is there another monitoring set you had in mind?

There's mine, it's a KRK KNS-8400. It's great, serves me well, nothing to criticise. There's absolutely no pleasure in listening to music with it, which I believe is the best quality for a headset lol
OP done goofed because I guess he expected good quality headphones to enhance his pleasure, but like a gooner who has never had sex he assumed the wrong things... Yeah it depends. I never trust non-specific brands like I have a pair or earbuds from 1MORE (Quad Driver) that do make music sound better than it actually is, for a specific experience. I wouldn't buy Sony or JVC, I would rather buy Sennheiser of JBL for audio.
I dunno man OP listens to old Steely Dan mixes. Maybe he should try modern stuff with modern equipment, it's only natural. When I listen to 80s thrash demos with my Quad Driver it sounds absolutely pathetic too.
