weird isnt it
imagine sitting in on the MTV execs having their growth strategy meetings over those years, like, what exactly was their plan to escape the fact that theyve been a dead format on a dead medium for literal decades

Good thing about Radio/TV music shows is curated playlists by people who's entire life is music.
Why I still have this in by bookmarks and check it out every couple weeks
https://rageagain.com/#/home
Playlists (auto linked to youtube) by Rage and it's guest programmers going back to the 1990s.

MTV Classic USA is still going to air so false

>Decide to do reality TV shit to appeal to teenagers
>It works, but OG audience is pissed
>Become tumblr TV to appeal to the tumblr crowd
>Everyone is mad except for a bunch of dumb tumblrettes, but ultimately it doesn't work. Retarded tumblr rants on social justice doesn't work and isn't music, decide to quietly retire it
>MTV news shuts down (not like they were talking about music anyways, no one cares)
>Main channel is reduced to Ridiculousness reruns

Sure, people in the mid 2010s were wearing MTV T-shirts, but they said Music Television, and didn't reflect then current MTV.

isn't TV in general kinda dead tho
I haven't watched TV for like 10 years

It's still barely going, but it's mostly news and reruns now. Of course there's still new shows, but it's either reality TV bullshit or sitcoms/dramas no one really watches.

You realize that's also a problem right? Because you're only listening to someone's specific music tastes

I feel that in the future they're going to revive it somehow

Music videos are dead anyway. I haven't seen a memorable one is years.

Everyone ran with this news story despite the fact it was just the MTV Europe region 24 hour music video channels that ended. That sort of content is outdated anyway now that you can watch on demand almost whatever video you want.

Radio survived in some diminished form, but that may be because it's cheaper to run a radio station than a TV network
>>
>>128983554
mtv was a shambling corpse by the end of the 90s
something of value was lost by then
by 2026? who the fuck was even watching whatever was broadcast? did they even play (full) music videos anymore?
>>
>>128995315
That and everyone driving listens to radio

>imagine sitting in on the MTV execs having their growth strategy meetings over those years, like, what exactly was their plan to escape the fact that theyve been a dead format on a dead medium for literal decades
they knew that long ago, which is why they transitioned to reality TV. But TV died too, and they did not/could not pivot to the online reality. People watching MTV are now watching streamers who do the reality tv bit far better than TV did.
>>
>>128983953

Just FYI, there's some clickbait here.

The last remaining 24/7 music video channels are gone.

The actual channel will remain, but it's just reality shows and Ridiculousness reruns.
>>
>>128997091
>Ridiculousness

Also, they cancelled that show too. But don't worry, they'll rerun it when nothing else is on.

How come Asians can make music shows on TV work, but the same concept is unthinkable in the West?
>>
>>128997941
Asia has idol culture, the way Westerners treat musicians as celebrities doesn't have the same multimedia potential.
>>
>>128998017
The West used to treat musicians as God before they went full push with the rap meme.
>>
>>128997941
West doesn't watch TV anymore, unless it's on demand streaming
>>
>>128998051
And they don't watch TV anymore because the programming turned into shit. If it was like in the 90s still, they would watch it. Chicken and egg. My Gen-X brother is often complaining that there aren't good musical channels anymore.
>>
>>128998070
I don't think people are going to magically go back to TV just because "Oh, something good is on there" anymore, and most companies aren't going to bother making good shit for TV anymore when "Welp, no one's gonna watch it".
>>
>>128998070
Streaming killed music channels. Kids were also the ones who had enough time to watch stuff like MTV and they are growing up with streaming services and social media.

MTV could have ADAPTED and become a HUGE 21st century media brand - just as the RECORDING industry could have adapted as PHYSICAL media became obsolete at scale as the core of element of profit modeling.

INSTEAD, the recording industry went around SUING their customer base and insisting that their PAYOLA driven monopoly was something they were entitled to - meanwhile, MTV in lieu of conquering YOUTUBE and developing SOUNDCLOUD talent and the like decided to double down on LGBTQ agitprop, minstrel shows like JERSEY SHORE and documentaries about TEEN MOMS purchasing fake breasts.

I continue to be fascinated by LEGACY MEDIA brands (first among them ROLLING STONE) insisting that music CHARTS still exist and are an actual metric by which profits can be coded/analyzed. There's this positively SOVIET-esque, methodologically nonsensical formula they made up and rely upon that would be the envy of GOSPLAN in its Byzantine obsolescence.

even if MTV remained "pure" like it was when it started, it would've been irrelevant. why would I listen to MTV when I have the fucking internet?

>"I continue to be fascinated by LEGACY MEDIA brands (first among them ROLLING STONE) insisting that music CHARTS still exist and are an actual metric by which profits can be coded/analyzed."
>stream song
>service counts your listen
>artist gets fraction of a penny
>service puts it in database and powers that be see it
It's pretty simple

Videos in watchable quality when youtube's quality was a joke and many people still had dial up, maybe?

I found some MTV rewind site and thought it was cool, but immediately dropped it when one of those windows movie maker slide shows popped up. Come on man, that ain't a music video.

The West used to have that too until, I dunno, 2012? American Idol was big and for musicians in general you had guys as old as Little Richard receive mass-recognition.

What point is there continuing a m/v channel when zoomers have produced exactly zero good songs/videos…
