There's nothing to grow out of, but localslop does fucking suck 99.99% of the time. Art is communication, and a lot of people just have nothing to say.

If you go to "local" shows you'll probably see bad local hobby bands. The best thing is to find the styles of music that appeal to you, and then find the bands that are shining in those styles. I grew up in Colorado, and there are some great bands from Colorado like Wovenhand and Wayfarer, but I didn't find those by looking into local bands, I found them because they were notable bands on a national level in black metal and post-punk.

I didn't. My local bands do mostly suck but most of my best discoveries this past year were foreign artists with no Spotify and a handful of views on youtube. I don't wish to share my wealth with the average current year /mu/ poster but I will recommend exploring radio and curated mixes from around the world.
