If you haven't kept up, ever since they came back after covid in 2021 they've had some really fresh changes and feel way more inspired. They've spent a lot of time really honing in the deeper darker experimental effects jams. Now it just feels like something they've got in their back pocket when it's needed, whereas ~2019 whenever they'd go for it it'd usually be short and fall flat. They did a whole tour with barely any peaks at all, imo to learn how to not rely on it as a crutch. Most people nowadays seem to hold it together pretty good since the fanbase has aged, shows have gotten more expensive, and it's left a lot of the real junkies going to small time fests like "wormtown" where the biggest band playing is a grateful dead cover band or just random american fest EDM. But you still see some real lost causes at most shows. People flail dancing in corners where you can barely hear the music, just have no idea where they are etc.On top of that, the sort of base formula for their music at the lowest level has strong roots in classic rock, prog etc, so you end up with a lot of "music these days sucks, back in the day we had REAL music" types. The types to say "I like everything! rock, blues, funk, bluegrass..." etc. These people are usually pretty tasteless, they couldn't comprehend an ambient or noise record in the slightest but when phish delivers that stuff to them within the context of something more familiar, a "jam", they can just say "that shit was crazy" and get tripped out by deeper music that mostly only the band is privy to. I hear elements of ambient, noise, shoegaze, post-rock in phish's jams all the time but the fans themselves can only take that shit in when phish deconstructs it for them.In short, for being a fanbase that's honestly pretty open minded to weird music, they somehow are also some of the most tasteless motherfuckers possible, and a good chunk of them likely have brain damage from excessive drug use
Been a Phan since 02’. My first show was supposed to be Charlotte 03’, but fucked up, couldn’t go and my first actual show was Knoxville 09’. The entire “Mike pedo” thing was definitely an issue when it happened, but ultimately didn’t destroy the band’s reputation permanently or force Mike to leave the band.
