Most overrated/worst American band. Bland folky and country jam band nonsense you had to do drugs to to enjoy.
>>
>>129024841
these guys and their fanbase are/were surprisingly arrogant and cocky. talking about blowing offstage acts that they supported, dissing other musicians,
>>
I'll always have a bit of deadhead in me from being a teenage hippie but phish are better musicians and a more interesting band. I saw further once in 2011, I have no interest in Dead and Co. Joe Russo's Almost Dead is pretty good.
>>

Legend has it theyre still tuning up to this day
>>
I heard an interview with Jerry Garcia where he basically admitted that (at least initially) they were beloved by that whole Ken Kesey scene simply because they were an actual band that could play competently. Before them the only music at those Acid Test parties was just the party guests banging on bongos and making tard noises. They showed up one time and the simple fact that they were a plugged in electric rock band with some technical skill was enough to blow the minds of the audience back when LSD was still new and niche.
>>
Never really got them but they have one or two songs I don't hate. Their aesthetics are based though.

Tucker Carlson and Ayn Rand were both Dead Heads apparently.

boring boomer tripe
>>
Live dead the album is unmatched and even most of their other live albums don't come close to that quality. Dark star>st stephen>eleven is an amazing run and the total peak of jam bands only matched by Allman brothers at their peak (mountain jam)

Post phishs best live music and prove your statement. I doubt they ever came close to live/dead
>>
>>129026761
What is based about their aesthetic?
t.fan of their live music
>>
>>129024841
The most recorded live band to ever do it. I understand the band's failings but 1) extremely few of their concerts have the same setlist twice and 2) the music has this effect on me where it hypnotizes me into being happy. It's like anti-metal. It sings to my soul and is like music pleasing to God.
>>
I like their studio stuff and dislike the live stuff
>>
>>129026684
that checks out. I remember being entranced by t a glowing red light on a power strip while on acid. Think of loud ass guitar amps and ride cymbals tinkling while you're tripping. Anyone ITT could have gone back in time and made money off stoned boomers on acid

That's ironic, they liked playing live and didn't like their studio albums. You see, the studio albums are like giving an autopsy to the songs. It's dead and categorized. But by playing it live and playing around with it, it is a new song every night. In this way, it is alive.

Off-topic but what's the deal with Phish? Trey's playing is really noodly and when he played Jerry in the GD50 tour, it made the Dead sound noodly too. Phish profited from the death of Jerry by becoming the new top jam band in the world but I do not get the same sensation from Phish as I do from the Grateful Dead.

Agreed. I tried on multiple occasions to try to understand them and came up dry every time.

>listened to their first 10 studio albums to see if they were quality
Mostly all shit maybe at most 2 songs that I enjoyed that were total deep cuts and not well known fan favorites.

>listen to various live albums from different eras and watched some live footage too to try and see if they were good at jamming
Basically all terrible except for some early live recordings that I thought were at best OK

Truly one of the best ways to diagnose just how shit they are is when you hear them cover other bands, it's hilariously bad. Like yes, they are capable of playing their own songs in a convincing way but the second they touch The Beatles or The Who or anyone else it's the worst most broken down busted cover of a classic song that you'd ever hear.

More specifically I find the idolization of Garcia as a guitarist completely laughable when he literally never played anything more than basic as fuck rock guitar that any teenager could achieve in a couple years. Guys like Zappa or Iommi or Fripp run circles around Garcia and yet people think of him as some kind of rock god.

I worked at a Bob Weir and Wolf Brothers concert at the LA Greek Theatre and it was the most painfully unmusical gig I've ever worked. 3 hours of jammy rock slop and Bob's guitar was jacked up in the mix and he could barely play on time, in key, or in tune for that matter. And yes 60,000 boomers were there pretending like it was the greatest thing ever, depressing.
>>
Never understood it.
>>
total shit band, utter crap
>>
I'm Grateful that they're Dead
>>
This thread is full of retarded nigger faggots. Typical /mu/. Kek. The Dead are probably the greatest American rock band of all time, outside of The Allman Brothers and Skynyrd.
>>
>>129030415
Time to give up on music, my man. There’s no hope for you.
>>
>>129036495
Nah, they're shit.
>>
All boomer hippy music is embarrassingly bad and very gay, this includes The Beatles, pink Floyd, hendrix, zeppelin and basically any rock music before Van Halen
>>
>>129024841
They're great. Loved Live/Dead and American Beauty.
>>
>>129033115
>he literally never played anything more than basic as fuck rock guitar
this shows a profound lack of understanding and intelligence.
>>
>>129036874
I dare you to find me 3 examples of him playing a lead guitar part that in isolation is recognizeable and not just noodling on the pentatonic. Guitar parts that actually light up the part of the brain that makes you go “wow this music makes me feel something and I can actually recall the melody 5 minutes later!” Find me 3 truly iconic stand out moments that he produced on guitar that aren’t just sloppy noodling rock n’ roll chops.
>>
>>129024841
they suck. maybe a couple decent studio recordings like Casey Jones but overall they're dogshit
>>
>>129036503
Live music almost universally sucks
>>
>>129036495
As time as gone on I think my love for the Allman Brothers has surpassed the Dead.
