was he important or just a token boomers could claim to like for cool points?

got xim EP, it good
Greatest Hits [Epic, 1970]As someone who was converted to Sly over the radio rather than at the Fillmore, I still have my doubts about his albums--even Stand! falters during "Sex Machine." But this is among the greatest rock and roll LPs of all time. The rhythms, the arrangements, the singing, the playing, the production, and--can't forget this one--the rhythms are inspirational, good-humored, and trenchant throughout, and on only one cut ("Fun") are the lyrics merely competent. Sly Stone's gift for irresistible dance songs is a matter of world acclaim, but his gift for political anthems that are uplifting but never simplistic or sentimental is a gas. And oh yeah--his rhythms are amazing. A+
>>129026747so he was a token for media libs to prove their bona fides after all?
>>129026729he has one good album but its also a really sad one. a lot of people into his music also dont really like it
He's good. Nothing to talk about. New stuff hardly ever gets released. I was shocked when I saw an early concert of the Family Stone come up on streaming last year.Even when p4k mattered on this board, there still weren't many Sly threads. (p4k used to dickride Sly pretty hard.)
60s Sly > 70s SlyNo I will not elaborate
1001 hip-hop tracks used Sly Stone samples.
>>129026729it's one of those artists that was super acclaimed at its time but simply kinda got forgotten for whatever reason
>>129026747>reviewing a greatest hits album
>>129026729Like most of his peers (Aretha, Hayes, Mayfield, etc) he lost it once the soul era had given way to funk/disco.
>>129027714>he lost it once the soul era had given way to funk/disco.>Had the God father of Funk bass Larry Graham in the bandHow fucking retarded are you? Sly WAS FUNK you stupid cunthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ0PSpHFV_s
>>129027928early funk was a little different from the kind of sound you got once Ohio Players and Commodores emerged, it was more sparse and not as big and in-your-face. most of the 60s-early 70s R&B giants couldn't adapt.
>>129027714He was one of the inventors of funk you philistine
>>129027512basedhttps://youtu.be/oPEIFMSAkcQ
>>129027983Ah, ok. You didn't clarify what you meant. I see your point.
>>129026729They are not as good as Earth, Wind and Fire. This is not even an opinion , it's a very well known fact. It has nothing to do with color , Sly Stone is just not that good , it belongs to the 70s and that's it.
>>129028027that's ok though. a song like "Chain of Fools" was definitely proto-funk but it's a lot different from Ohio Players kind of funk and a lot sparser-sounding.
>>129028045Considering the bulk of Sly's output was during the 1960s... fuck off
>>129026729I don't think people here listen to black music at all.And don't make me say it about rap.
>>129028160we had a fairly good Aretha Franklin thread the other day, so sometimes...
>>129026729>>129027676It's funny cause, like with ABBA, only his greatest hits album really matters. His deep cuts were meh.
Talented guy but the music is just ok
>>129027656My Brother has invented the nuclear Bomb and he got even so famous that he got a Mahagony in a Video Game, "Lucas Simms" in Fallout 3 is derived from Lakus Simius, My Brother is Italian you know an thatls that.
>>129026729Not music
>>129029563as if you would know lol
>>129028022Underrated song, underrated album
>/mu/ saying Sly is irrelevant or not good embarrassing
>>129032223He's highly irrelevant. No one gives a shit. In fact, no one gives a shit about music anymore, tard.
idk, its a travesty, though. The man laid down so many classics for other people to cover and sound better than him.
>>129026816Which?
>>129035989its complete lighting in a bottle. you cant find other albums like this because it shouldnt really exist. easily my pick for best album of the 70s. nothing else compares to this
