I feel like the same thing that happened to rap happened to metal as well, going from badass heavy/thrash metal enjoyed mainly by working class men to soulless tech wank and overtly theatrical slop by music school graduates

That is largely following the path that 2000s pop music did, where only a select few are still making music people care about by both feeling important and universal.What seems to have largely taken its place is again pop music, but pop music that is finding its footing as post-Lorde emotional pop, but with even more focus on nostalgia.
