Thoughts on Elektron devices? They seem a bit cryptic, but are said to be rather powerful. Is it a good device for doing some freestyle jamming?
How smart do you have to be to make good music? I'm not a genius, so idk if it's worth trying. I really enjoy listening and finding music though
>>129036237You can have AI do it for you if you're really too stupid.
>>129036237It really depends on your end goals and what good music means to you. You don't need to be smart, but you absolutely have to be dedicated and work really fucking hard at it for years. The reality is that being a bedroom producer is seriously hard work and you HAVE to take it seriously and spend a lot of time (and money) to learn the ins-and-outs of a variety of mediums and disciplines. Again, you don't have to be academic, you just need to have self-discipline and dedication.
>>129036251Maybe using AI to help? I have Suno premium, but it sounds kind of generic most the time. I was thinking of remixing existing songs. I'm worried if I upload copyrighted songs to the platform it'll ban me though, but otherwise it relies entirely on prompts>>129036490If starting today, how would you go about it? Just looking to where to focus. I've got free time since I work from home. I was thinking uploading on youtube to pair the songs/albums with some art I'd be making to go along with it
https://vocaroo.com/16EdasRsR9aN>>129034533What the actual fuck? I was actually listening to House Party mixes during the long road trips I took with my family to the beach and back for New Years.Stop reading my browser history, fed.
>>129035602>freestyle jammingafter several hours of organising and much longer learning the buttons. if you rtfm and spend time you can get good stuff depending on your genre of music. there are other more immediate machines for 'jamming'.
>>129036237it depends on what you mean by good. find a song you like, split it into stems in your daw and try to replicate it using splice samples or whatever you can get for free. see if you enjoy that. you cna get track templates of popular songs in certain styles for ableton and fruityloops or whatever the kids call it. make 'original' tracks using those templates. see if you like making tracks. creating from scratch comes later once you know you like the process.avoid suno, it is shit and a waste of time. no one cares about ai music and you will gain nothing. at most, use ai to change your own regular singing into listenable singing, but don't use it to 'create'. your time can be spent in better ways.

I have trouble getting good vocals on my song, no matter how I sing I don't get any depth in it. I'm thinking about putting a capacitor in the other room, I did that with an acoustic guitar and was happy with the result. >>129050339>too "commercial"i can't deny that people can be wrongfully shit on in this general, but if it's something that happens consistently you probably deserve it.personally i've never heard a vocaroo posted that was intending to be pop in a mainstream way that didn't suck- not because the production quality was poor, but because the songwriting just wasn't there, which is a far greater offense that draws responses of both ire and posters glazing you in spite of it.regardless, high effort posts draw more high effort responses on the whole, both in the quality of your song and outlining what's on your mind.
>>129050339>most family/friend feedback just tends to boil down to "sounds pretty good"It can be helpful to be specific in the questions you ask. Show them A and B versions of tracks, ask questions like '"is the lead that comes in at 30 second too loud", stuff like that.
>>129050393>consistentlyi wouldn't say it happens all the time, but definitely enough to kill off some of my drive and make me question my own judgement on what's "good" at leastas an example, i do recall making some late-'80s style instrumental pop-rock track a couple years back which got surprisingly decent responses hereon the topic of songwriting, i'd also argue that a lot of mainstream hits have very shallow and/or meaningless lyrics toobut personally, my creative writing skills suck even if i'm good with melodies, so i guess that might be part of it>>129050462>Show them A and B versions of tracksactually not a bad idea, i'll have to try that at some point, thanks anon
>>129050532Art doesn't have to be profound. Sometimes it can just be a vibe.
>>129050532>songwritingi was referring more to the hooks/melodies.poor lyrics are obviously an easy target though, of course.>i'd also argue that a lot of mainstream hits have very shallow and/or meaningless lyrics toonot wrong, but i think a lot of people who shit on pop songs for that don't really "get" them or are judging them by criteria that pop songs aren't supposed to even meet.even among "simple and stupid" lyrics there's a wide swath of quality and a thin line to walk (and idneitfy good from bad), which is typically why people dismiss it as a whole (and why they're harder to pull off).e.g taylor swifts "shake it off" verus bruno mars "i'd catch a grenade for you."both are fairly similar in terms of memorability, and being brain dead, but the latter has a mega cringe factor that makes it famously bad.
>>129050532Enough walls of text, post an example of something that got shat on, or something new if you're brave. I will give you honest feedback, no hug-boxing. I'll listen on muh monitors and on muh headphones and try to explain exactly why your song is shit.

saying it again if anyone is looking for a way to draft/record stuff without a dawget a tp 7 and a tx 6. using a 4 track in 2026 is a total larpthey work seamlessly together its perfect. the tx 6 lets you do all your fx and mixing shit, as well as having a basic drum machine and synth mode. pretty sure you can sequence midi with it too but ive never tried that. the tp 7 lets you record stuff and overdub and you just connect it to the mixer with usb c. i love them so much. theyre both a bit mid on their own tho.i hate TE btw but this setup is so perfect for me, theres nothing like it

>>129045183What do you want to do with it? What's your level? If you want drum pads, this is strictly MIDI controller territory:- From your picrel, the Arturia 61 keys with 16 pads (mkii or mkiii, can't remember rn) has the better keybed. The "essential" version keybed is shite. $400? Bus powered. - Used Roland A500 PRO for $100, decent keys, lots of buttons and very programmable, not plug and play though in most DAWs. Bus powered.- NI S line is fantastic, but pricey, and it makes sense fi you use NI/Maschine ecosystem. I'd Avoid AKAI, Novation, Nektar offerings. Studio Logic is also meh. If you are an actual player or want to learn piano/harmony besides the production, I'd go for something immediate, capable and affordable. I'm 73-88 player and my master keyboards/controllers are a Yamaha YC73 ($$$) and a P121 ($$). Good thing about this category is they are actual keyboards with great feeling keybeds, bonus MIDI capabilities and some have built-in audio interface, which is often all you need. Smaller (49-61 keys) and decent offerings can be found used for the same prices as newer but inferior MIDI keyboards.

>>1290945511000% yes and anybody saying otherwise doesn't pay attention to new music.the chances of doing that when you're green, and while you yourself aren't tapped in enough to know that are practically zero though, obviously.
I love vocoders. I'm only slightly sorry.https://vocaroo.com/1iCHnCEWMdgE
i was listening to whale noises and songs while i came across this. they are called siren calls. https://dosits.org/galleries/audio-gallery/marine-mammals/pinnipeds/ross-seal/

>>129100735completely re-do the arrangement so it's not all playing in the same spot
>>129100735delete the project file
I need more samples
God I just can't decide on a sequencer/sampler.

>>129072145>https://voca.ro/15HbWGxw0mrSno sub-bass and eq the vocals out from the deeper end >>129079540it's not bad though? depends on what vibe you're going for
>>129103338honestly sounds like you ai generated a song, stem split it, and then dragged in assorted splice loops to make a rough structure with very little tweaking.okay idea. poor execution.
>>129103338hats are too loud, selection of sounds and samples is very poor and it's simply not a very good arrangement . I can see what you were going for, but just sounds like you're not quite able to pull it off yet.
>>129034533making progress on this mess of a tracknow with a bossa nova B-sectionhttps://voca.ro/1h88qJ0Y5TRTtried to simplify the drums in the "dnb" section by basically copying the drums in Radiohead's Weird Fishes / Arpeggi
>>129103338fuck them niggas this shit fire
>>129103338Just too many things competing for space, both sonically and melodically. I'd strip everything back to drums, bassline and vocal and go from there, because you have chords and synth arps going all across the key that just sounds disharmnious and sloppy. Like the other guy said, cool idea, but you dont quite have the know how to execute it yet. But dont let that discourage you, I can hear what you're trying to do and theres a cool song in there somewhere, right now you just have too much stuff in there for it to come across clearly.
>>129103771Cool stuff. Get like James Blake vibes. That aside. The vocal doubling on the vocals in the intro throws me off. It might be subjective, but you have a classical guitar, small felt piano and the wide, doubled vocals comes stumbling in over it. I'd try to either pull down one of the doubled takes or remove it entirely (In the first couple of bars of the intro) because it creates this slap back delay/chorusy effect that stands in stark contrast to the natural sounding piano and guitar. You can gradually introduce it further into the song when it goes from small to bigger. The doubled vocals works in the rest of the song when you've introduced synth elements and more digital sounds.
>>129103771>>129104215Oh and the bossa nova part was great and could be a great outro.
>>129104234>>129104215Makes sense, thank you! Big fan of James Blake. For the doubled vocals I wanted to do a Sufjan Stevens thing (https://youtu.be/4WTt69YO2VI?si=XgDfMWJ7AMh6KJW3). But maybe using an acoustic guitar is too familiar compared to the weird mandolin he uses, so there's more of an expectation of hearing acoustic-sounding vocals? I'll experiment with it anyway
Egh, lots of goodies for sale with Firewire.
>>129100773Teres only like 4 different elements playing at one given time

>>129106145that doesn’t mean anything. you still managed to make it sound cluttered with that little.pull up a frequency analyzer, mute the sample, play with the octaves.
>>129109074the vocal sample already ducks heavy under the rest of the beat
>>129034533Still have those cd's
>>129109373great but it still sounds cluttered. ask yourself why you could tell it needed to be ducked.the vocal and sample shouldn’t even be playing at the same time.
Haven't made anything in a while, did this little loop/outro bit todayhttps://vocaroo.com/15lZXwD0lSZm>>129108493Dig it anon espectially the second one
>>129109588>the vocal and sample shouldn’t even be playing at the same timehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gy5ykAQc9o&list=RD7gy5ykAQc9o&start_radio=1I mean i'll try muting it when the vocals play. what makes it work on songs like this tho is what i'm wandering
>>129109646the drums and sample are heavily filtered. there's no extra synth. the vocals are mixed brighter and "above" everything
>>129037547I liked this. I listened to it twice.
https://vocaroo.com/1hGqgisMS35XI cleaned it up a bit and tried to smooth out some of the harsher elements. What do you think?
>>129110122bro remove those effects on the vocal
>>129110142But I like weird effects and shit on vocals? The more fucked up and unintelligible, the better.
>>129110142Like I eat this shit up:https://youtu.be/LJXS03PkpoA?si=RU7CtmD-Y5GOnh0H
https://voca.ro/1lQmFPMpuiamI can't sing so I'll need to re-record the vocals 100-200 times until I get something perhaps mildly listenable. The bass goes too high and blends in with everything else at around 48 seconds. What else is terrible?
https://vocaroo.com/1nrNrkomNleEokay how do i improve upon this, im actually gonna try get a full live project recorded this monthare the bones of this track interesting enough to be my gold standard for the rest of the project??
some day you will understand the groove stealing resonance saturation problem.
>>129110226I like the mathy composition and playing, I think you need some better engineering to get this sounding better as a recording. Especially during the chug part it just feels kinda hollow, I'm not sure how you're recording this but probably want better mics or compression? Live it would work pretty well I think. One thing you might try is lengthening the different sections, try to progress the heavy section further to maybe get it to feel more like going through movements vs. noticeably switching back and forth between the two riffs.
>>129110226>are the bones of this track interesting enough to be my gold standard for the rest of the project??honestly, i think you need to think more about your phrasing and how you move from one to another.idk if this phrasing will make sense, but while you have the implied harmony/melodic movement right, you're completely missing the rhythmic complexity with all the passing notes and such, which is like 80% of what makes this style interesting.
>>129110209Two things: the lyrics are some of the worst I have ever heard and the chord progressions are some of the most cliched, done-to-death shit known to man. Would be solid as a comedy satire song.
>>129110226on top of what >>129110459 said, I feel the two chord stop-start stumming bit (from 0:24 ish) is a bit dull, as in, it could use more interesting chords and be progressed/mixed up in an interesting way for the reprise. It's a little too stripped back as is.>>129110226>are the bones of this track interesting enough to be my gold standard for the rest of the project??I can't tell if you're being serious or not.
