Do you collect physical music?
>>129037530I hate the false dichotomy that's popped up recently where people make it seem like your choices are either Spotify or vinyl records and that's it. Digital files are clearly the most practical option and instead of encouraging people to waste money, space and plastic on CDs or cassettes or some shit we should just pressure phone manufacturers like Apple to put SD card slots on their devices. You can have your cake and eat it too.
Yes
>>129037587I would imagine anyone on /mu/ who owns physical media also maintains a digital collection, the false dichotomy is yours. I own hundreds of records and have a NAS for my digital media collection
>>129037530kinda wish I didn't get into vinyl and just stuck with cds due to $$$ and space but too late to stop now
>>129037530I have a lot of CDs and records but I rarely get any new ones anymore. I was at a record fair a couple of months ago and could easily have blown £250 within 10 minutes but decided against purchasing anything cause shits expensive these days.
just the good stuff
>>129037587 i spend a decent amount of time watching videos of live performances on youtube, they very often have much better audio than actual live concerts ive gone to
Just remembered when new vinyl would cost 19-24.99 (CANADIAN..) and would include a digital download code
>>129037530So many great games in there, Medievil, Duke Nukem, Chrono series, Street Fighter, Medal of Honor, Castlevania, Resident Evil, Syphon Filter, fighting force, army men...
>>129037602I should've stipulated that that thought was on a tangentially related note. I'm not saying I think physical media is obsolete now that digital files exist, I'm not even saying that OP was creating this false dichotomy, I was just talking about it since we're on the subject. It seems to be something people in general are saying a lot, that we need to ditch streaming and go back to physical media. I don't like that.
>>129037530I'm an ancient, early Millennial. Of course I collect physical music.
>>129037774Do you happen to be a Taiwanese-American who grew up in Naperville, IL perchance?
>>129037587This>>129037602You are wasting your money
>>129037799I've made far more than I ever spent buying records. Records I bought at amvets when I was in high school sell for impressive prices these days. When I was in college in the mid-2010s, that's how I got my spending money
>>129037530I I see cool CD's and vinyl records in a charity shop or at a market I buy them, if I find a niche musician I like i'll buy their album in flac. Sometimes I torrent stuff.
>>129037587You're right but if I have the choice between spending $9 for a digital album (which are often still MP3 instead of FLAC for some fucking reason) or $12 for the CD, I'm going with the latter because I'll just rip the files myself and I'll also have something to sit on my shelf which looks nice in my media center.
I have a few CDs, but nothing impressive.
>>129038132>which are often still MP3 instead of FLAC for some fucking reasonflac takes up more space and mp3 is very much good enough at 320kbps
>>129037587I think people who defend vinyl have already just invested so much into the medium they can't stand the fact that CDs were always better. They sold their CDs to buy more vinyl and now vinyl is stupid expensive while CDs were stupid expensive when they were the only option, but now are completely affordable and work as dual format if you have somewhere to rip the files from CD. The unfortunate effect is the kids now romanticize CDs and those are gonna start to get a bit pricier probably.
>>129038423Most people who are into vinyl bought equipment and records when they were being given away for peanuts. It was a practically free hobby until the last 10 years
>>129037530I stopped buying vinyl because of the price and my turntable is broken. I still like to buy CDs when I get the chance.Go used, or go home.
>>129037530>collectNo.Except for picrel, I just had to have them all (great artwork, mixed contents)
>>129038549actually the overwhelming majority of people with record collections don't even own record players nowadays
>>129038686Lots of people have one or two records they have as posters or memorabilia but nobody would buy a 'record collection' they can't use.
>>129038842vinyl records are the new funko pops. people are buying them just to collect them.https://consequence.net/2023/04/half-vinyl-buyers-record-player-study/
>>129038601you can make decent pocket change too. that shitty black metal album at goodwill for $1 could be worth 20 bucks on discogs
Yeah. Almost at 400 CDs now. It's not for everyone but I enjoy my collection and putting on physical copies to listen to is my preferred method. Don't wish anyone any ill will regardless of their listening preferences.
>>129037530I have like 50 CDs from when I was a kid and I never use em, white elephant desu. Sometimes changes in technology are a good thing.
>>129037530Not really; I like owning high quality digital copies of the music I like, that way I get best of both worlds, ownership and compactness.
>>129037530anon, music isn't physical you can't collect it
>>129039011Taylor Swift is the best-selling artist on vinyl, but the majority of vinyl enthusiasts buy old albums secondhand. People who buy old albums secondhand likely bought them in the past, when secondhand vinyl prices were a fraction of what they are today. I know this because I bought tons of albums in the 2000s and sold many of them in the 2010s, like I said earlier
I like CDs. I listen to music on youtube, and if I like an album enough I buy it on CD. I have some vinyl and a record player but dislike the format. I only use it for stuff I can get very cheap. I have a couple classic albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality that are actually old and they sound good. I also have the Beatles blue album and it sounds like SHIT.And I found a Tascam 4track cassette thing at goodwill so I kinda got into tapes again but I only collect blank ones lol. The art is so cool.
I absolutely do. I've collected since early high school. I'll post pictures and everything. If anyone wants upclose pictures of anything feel free to reply. (1/4)

>>129037530>picshit taste desu
>>129037530I buy used cd's on eBay so the label jew doesn't get a penny.
>>129038615hey, I own those too
>>129039753is this a reference to something?
>>129039643can we see closeups of the spines?
>>129040508Sure. I don't think people want me to gum up the thread with ALL of them though so just pick # between 1 and 29.
>>129040501yes
>>129037530why the fuck would i waste my money on that shit
>>1290405422, 7 and 13 please
I dabbleI know it's a waste of money, but it soothes my autism
friendly reminder:no physical media = poser:)
>>129037530Yeah, CDgang rise up. These are my pickups since November. I think I've breached the 1000 cd mark. I'll have to update my Discogs to see.
>>129042144whoops
>>129037530Lemme cave my hulking 500 + pound ass on this stack of CDs and eat my subway meatball footlong spill sauce all over itI am Satan after all just here to stir up more tragedy for my own amusement
>>129037530I have CDs, Records, Tapes and listen to tons of digital music. There is a lot of shit that is still not online but you have to go pretty fucking deep at this point to get there. Like a local band CD or something. I'm fighting the compulsion for collecting and trying to just enjoy listening online but I already lost that battle in general but it's a new year. I'm going to try to focus more on creating music and getting gear.
>>129038615Really loved some of the few samples I listened of these. Any more recs like it? Closest thing I can think of is the Sushi 3000 comp but it's not as lounge-ish as this series.
>>129037608Listening on vinyl irrationally makes the experience much more intimate and wonderful compared to digital which is great, but now that I've seen the light I keep wasting money on music that's free on Soulseek. At least it's not drugs, is what I tell myself.
I buy a CD I really like now and then, mostly to play it in my beater car for a really fun and intimate listening experience. Otherwise, it's Spotify (which I'm gonna quit sooner or later) and pirating.
>>129038423>The unfortunate effect is the kids now romanticize CDs and those are gonna start to get a bit pricier probably. This has been the case for awhile now.
Sony has a program called Media Go that can rip CDs into .flac files.
>>129041863Nice setup, nigga. And it's not a waste of money if you enjoy it and love what you're listening to. People who bitch about others owning or preferring physical media seem unbearable.
>>129037530I have physical media, but I dont like to think of it as collecting. I have various reasons for buying. Even though it's valid to see it as a waste of money, I think if people like me stopped, then music as a whole would suffer. Not saying I'm important, just that music should be valued.
no because i know i tend to romanticism old school/analog/"the process" shit when what i really prefer is quality of life and simplicityso i know that in practice i will absolutely prefer just listening to hi res music on my pc or laptop, where i can listen to an album, or decide i want to listen to another artist at random, or find a playlist to fit a certain vibe in the momenti like the idea of having a record player and collecting physical media and shit, but i know in practice i'm not gonna use that shit and i can get better sound from flac file without a bunch of pops and crackles and shitalso retards have cucked the market for likes on social media so now these outdated media formats are expensive as shit
>>129041793My sincere apologies. I was out to lunch with some relatives. Here's 2.
>>129041793And then 7.
>>129045793that's alright, I took like 4 hours to respond anyway. honestly I don't think anybody would mind you posting the rest of them. :) It would give the thread several bumps but obviously wouldn't hit bump limit. if anything you'd be doing us a favor.
>>129041793And then 13.
>tfw i don't collect cds but i do collect instruments and electronic music gear>still a streamfag thoughdoes that make me a poser? it feels poseresque
>>129041793And here's 14 as a 'bonus' since I initially miscounted the cubbies somehow.
>>129045836>does that make me a poser?Well there's a very simple test:Question 1. Do you like listening to music? If no, then you're a poser. If yes, then you are not a poser.
>>129045860this website has changed. back in 2018 if you openly admitted you only used spotify to listen to music you'd be told to kys and you might get banned for a couple days.
>>129039643What is some of the most recently released music you own on vinyl?
I want to start collecting final records, but I'm afraid I'll wear them down over time because I like to listen to the same records a lot in stints.
>>129046013>you'd be told to kysDepressing but not surprising considering the board >you might get banned for a couple days.Okay that I call bullshit on. But either way it's such stupid logic some people have on here that you either ONLY listen to streaming or ONLY own physical. They're not mutually exclusive. You can have both. I own physical and I use Apple Music. There's a lot of great music I own that's not really widely available on streaming. Also: call it a hunch but I feel like it'd be PRETTY difficult carrying around a turntable and bookshelf speakers to listen to some music when I'm walking to get coffee.
>>129046017The most recent music I own on vinyl as far as release year is "In Rainbows" by Radiohead. (Yes 'hahaha normie' I've heard it before. It's a good album. Sue me). Here's a handful of other 90s-onwards albums I own: >Sade - Love Deluxe >Bjork - Debut >Radiohead - The Bends >Ben Folds - Whatever and Ever Amen >Bjork - Homogenic >Radiohead - KID A >Bjork - Vespertine>David Bowie - Heathen>Joanna Newsom - The Milk Eyed Mender >Sufjan Stevens - Illinois >the Rent soundtrack>the Wicked soundtrack >Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman And there's a small bit of others but I can't remember them offhand. It makes up a small portion of my collection because that's not where my priorities lie.
I have close to a thousand records and several hundred cds. They have been accumulating for about twenty years. I've slowed down because it takes way too much fucking space. Digital files are on my computer and ipod. Most of the time I only listen to cds in the car. My autism gets going with vinyl so I only buy first pressings and vintage stuff.
>>129037530>>129037587>>129037602>>129037754The hybrid approach is best. I have an Apple Music subscription and use that for the majority of my listening and music discovery. For music I really love or music that’s obscure/unlikely to be on streaming, I will absolutely collect CDs. Everything gets ripped and I store the whole library on a couple backups just for good measure. I think the streaming sub cost is reasonable to have contingent access to almost all music out there, unless they start jacking up prices.
>>129045793nice Barbra Streisand recordsI prefer her earlier albums, but I do own her 70s records as well
>>129046502It's kinda funny to me that (in my experience) despite her being so damn prominent across thrift stores / flea markets, I've never seen a single 60s album of hers in person. It's always either her 70s albums or one of her greatest hits comps. I will say back in my super early 'Goodwill' days of vinyl shopping (and when I say early I mean when I JUST started, middle school era. When I was just buying any bottom of the barrel stuff just for the sake of buying.) I did own her two greatest hits comps.
>>129046019A record can be played back thousands of times if you have a diamond stylus, which isn't a whole lot of money
I subscribed to Amazon Music and now I'm ripping all the albums I can't find for a reasonable price to Type II cassette tapes with Dolby C. It's piracy, but much more BASED.
>>129045836you're poser-ish, like at least own your favorite albums or something, that's how it started for me just buying records I loved, but at least you own equipment which is more than most people in this thread who just collect music and don't try to play it at all, I suppose anything is better than just streaming music which is bottom of the barrel for 'music enjoyers'
I can barely commit to “owning” digital files on a hard drive at this point. I have a Walkman with 2TB SD but reality is that it doesn’t beat the convenience of a streaming app on my phone when I’m on the go. That’s why I’ll own nothing and be happy.
The CD rot debate is so fucking retarded. I have original mid 80s CD and they're flawless
>>129042151What's Neurosis doing here?
R8 my Amvets haul from today, /mu/. Top three are all folkways/adjacent recordings
>>129037530i got >late registration>wolf>and some others i forgot :p
