ive been really into murmur recently and it got me thinking that in 10 years or so rem will basically be lost to history
>>
Every rich person I know doesn't dislike rem so they'll survive
>>
REM is not forgotten nor are they gen x
>>
may as well start with their Athens scene-mates Love Tractor and Pylon.
there's an early REM interview where the interviewer asked them "how does it feel to be the best Athens band?" and their response was "we're not Pylon."

weirdly the B52s are on my college station right now
>>

The local college station plays B-52's occasionally and REM nonstop. To the point I heard another secondary band from the area for the first time, Guadalcanal Diary, and assume it was also REM because it sounds so similar
>>

that's pretty cool. I'm pretty close to Athens in ATL and they barely ever play anything by either band, so it was really random to realize it was them halfway through typing that post
>>
>>129039821
cool. i just found out pylon re-released all their albums recently. might have to pick them up

Pavement
Dinosaur Jr
Lucious Jackson

Their first records and the EP are so fucking good. Different band beyond that.

>the smiths but not good

REM was so overplayed on the radio from my childhood until my early adulthood that they basically became white noise to me, I barely even registered them as a band, they were just "stuff that plays on the radio". It took a while for me to be able to listen to them with fresh ears and realize that a lot of their stuff is unironically great.
>>
>>129037929
No they wont, losing my religion will be played on sirius xm lithium until the stars die out
>>
>>129043626
Yeah same I thought they were lame music for parents. It didn't help that I became aware of them around the time they were putting out crap like Reveal and Around the Sun. But then I listened to their 80s albums as an adult and I love them. I now even like a lot of their stuff from the 90s that's been overplayed to death.

>Nir van-a driving around listening to early REM
>Michael was queued for the IU follow up

REM are untouchable for this lore alone
>>
>>129037929
You can hear REM influences all over in American indie and alt-rock.
It's by far the most influential band in the genre.
>>
>>129045282
>the IU follow up
the what now? search just gives me kpop
>>
>>129045524
This. One of the most successful bands of all time. They're not forgotten. They were never forgotten. There's just nothing to say. They were amazing during their run then called it quits. They've never had the most exciting lore or anything but they pumped out so many classics back to back.
>>

watusi radio is a good song by them from what i remember i made a thread about that band and some anon talked about he saw them live back in the day
>>
>>129045789
i assume he means this:
>Stipe and Cobain became friends after R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck moved next door to Cobain and Courtney Love. Cobain greatly admired R.E.M. and told Rolling Stone in 1994 that for Nirvana's potential fourth album, he wanted to emulate their sound, describing it as "pretty ethereal, acoustic, like Automatic for the People".
>Stipe was concerned about Cobain's well-being and invited him to work with R.E.M. in March 1994 as a form of musical intervention. The plan was for a potential collaboration, though it never came to fruition due to Cobain's death shortly after.
